  • World Soil Day is observed on 5 December to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and advocating for the sustainable management of soil resources.
  • An international day to celebrate soil was recommended by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) in 2002.
  • The theme of World Soil Day for 2021 is ‘Halt soil salinisation, enhance soil production’.

International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development – 5 December

  • International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development is observed on 5 December every year to recognise and promote the contributions of volunteers around the world.
  • This day is also known as International Volunteer Day (IVD).
  • The theme of International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development for 2021 is ‘Volunteer now for our common future’.

Union Minister of External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar addresses the fifth Indian Ocean Conference in Abu Dhabi

  • Union External Affairs Minister Ṣ.Jaishankar addressed the fifth Indian Ocean Conference on 4–5 December 2021 in Abu Dhabi.
  • The theme of the Indian Ocean Conference 2021 is ‘Indian Ocean: Ecology, Economy, Epidemic’.
  • This two-day conference was organised by the India Foundation and is chaired by Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
  • S. Jaishankar met the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and expressed confidence that the bilateral strategic ties between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will scale new heights in the years to come. They also both discussed the cooperation and joint action that solidify the strategic partnership between the UAE and India and achieve their common interests and aspirations of their two friendly peoples.

India and Russia sign a deal for the procurement of AK-203 assault rifles

  • Union Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with the Indo–Russia Rifles Private Limited, which is a joint venture between India and Russia for the indigenous production of over six lakh AK-203 assault rifles at Korwa, Uttar Pradesh, to boost self-reliance in the defence manufacturing sector in India.
  • This deal worth is ₹5124 crores.
  • These 7.62 x 39 mm caliber AK-203 rifles will replace the INSAS rifles.
  • This project will likely be implemented by a special purpose joint venture called the Indo -Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL).
  • It will likely provide business opportunities to various micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and other defence industries for the supply of raw materials and components.

Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar launches India’s first indigenous server RUDRA

  • Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar launched the first indigenous server ‘RUDRA’ developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC). This server was developed under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) for manufacturing classical standalone commercial servers and also as building blocks for building large supercomputing systems of tens of petaflops of computing performance.
  • This server can be used in a variety of industries, including high-performance computing (HPC) systems, hyperscale data centres, edge computing, banking and commerce, manufacturing, the oil and gas industry and healthcare.

Gujarat becomes the largest manufacturing hub of India: RBI report

  • According to a report of the Reserve Bank of India, Gujarat became the largest manufacturing hub of India on the back of continuous improvement in investment and ease of doing business.
  • Gujarat overtook Maharashtra in terms of manufacturing.
  • The Gross Value Added (GVA) of Gujarat grew at an average rate of 15.9 per cent to ₹5.11 lakh crores from 2012 to 2020.
  • Maharashtra’s GVA grew by 7.5 per cent to ₹4.34 lakh crores from 2012 to 2020.

  • The top 10 countries for overall power in the Asia–Pacific region in the Lowy Institute Asia Power Index 2021 are the US, China, Japan, India, Russia, Australia, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand.
  • India finished in fourth place in four other measures — economic capability, military capability, resilience and cultural influence.

  • Alka Upadhyaya was appointed as the Chairperson of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
  • She is currently serving as an Additional Secretary of the Department of Rural Development under the Union Ministry of Rural Development.
  • She is a 1990-batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre.

The 11th edition of the joint military exercise ‘EKUVERIN’ between India and the Maldives begins

  • The 11th edition of the joint military exercise ‘EKUVERIN’ between India and the Maldives began at Kadhdhoo Island, the Maldives.
  • This exercise will improve synergy and interoperability between the armed forces of both nations in terms of understanding transnational terrorism both on land and at sea, conducting counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations and sharing best military practices and experiences.

Indian Navy launches its new large survey vessel ‘Sandhyak’ in Kolkata

  • The first big survey vessel of the GRSE-class, ‘Sandhayak’ was launched by the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE). The ship will be delivered to the Indian Navy in 2022.
  • The main function of these survey ships would be to undertake full-scale coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys of ports and harbours, as well as to determine navigational channels and routes.
  • These ships are also capable of undertaking surveys of Maritime limits and collection of oceanographic and geographical data for defence applications, thus boosting the maritime capabilities of India.

The first woman psychiatrist of India Sarada Menon passed away

  • The first woman psychiatrist of India Sarada Menon passed away at the age of 98 in Chennai.
  • She is the head of the Institute of Mental Health and a pioneer in India’s mental health space. She was the longest-serving head of the Institute of Mental Health.
  • She was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in the year 1992.
  • She founded the Schizophrenia Research Foundation in 1984.

Veteran journalist Vinod Dua passed away

  • Veteran journalist Vinod Dua passed away at the age of 67.
  • He was a pioneer in Hindi broadcast journalism, rising to prominence in the 1980s after beginning his career with the public broadcaster Doordarshan and later working for NDTV and the Indian digital news site The Wire.
  • He received the Padma Shri award for journalism in 2008 from the Government of India.

Veteran Marxist and Sri Lankan Tamil writer Se. Ganesalingan passed away

  • A veteran Marxist and Sri Lankan Tamil writer Ganesalingan passed away at the age of 93.
  • His first story was published in 1950 and eight years later, a collection of his short stories was released with an introduction by M. Varadarajan, also known as ‘Mu Va’ and highly recognised as a Tamil expert.
  • In 1965, Ganesalingan published his first novel, Neenda Payanam (Long Journey), which dealt with caste persecution for which he received an award from the Sri Lanka Sahitya Mandalaya.

World’s oldest test cricket player Eileen Ash passed away

  • The oldest living English Test cricketer Eileen Ash passed away at the age of 110.
  • She played seven tests for England, taking ten wickets at an average of 23 with her right-arm pace bowling, after making her debut against Australia in 1937.
  • She retired in 1949, but she also played golf until the age of 98 and even practiced yoga at the age of 105.
