Iran becomes India’s second-biggest oil supplier, ahead of Saudi Arabia:

  • India, Iran’s top oil client after China, shipped in 5.67 million tonnes or about 457,000 barrels per day of oil from the country in the first three months of this fiscal year.
  • Iran was the second-biggest oil supplier to Indian state refiners between April and June, replacing Saudi Arabia as companies took advantage of steeper discounts offered by Tehran.

Govt slashes minimum yearly deposit for Sukanya Samiriddhi Yojana account to Rs.250:

  • The government has slashed the minimum annual deposit requirement for accounts under the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana to Rs 250 from Rs 1,000 – a move that will enable more number of people to take advantage of the girl child savings scheme.
  • Under the scheme, a parent or legal guardian can open an account in the name of the girl child until she attains the age of ten years.
  • The government amended the Sukanya Samriddhi Account Rules – 2016 to state that the minimum initial deposit to open the account would be Rs 250.

Dhanvir, Priya set meet records in National Youth Athletics Championships:

  • Punjab shot-putter Dhanvir Singh and Kerala 400m hurdler Vishnu Priya set new meet records to win gold medals in the 15th National Youth Athletics Championships in Vadodara.
  • Dhanvir threw 19.69 metre in his fifth attempt to erase the earlier meet record of 19.34m set by Navtejdeep Singh in 2011.
  • The silver medal in the competition was claimed by Adish Ghildiyal of Uttarakhand. Aniket Kala of Uttarakhand took the bronze.

Govt selects 734 athletes for Khelo-India scholarships:

  • A total of 734 youngsters were shortlisted for scholarship under the Khelo India Talent Development Scheme.
  • The scheme is a unique programme to nurture sporting talent.AIR correspondent reports, Sports Authority of India (SAI) has cleared 734 athletes for the scholarship.
  • Through this programme, the athletes will get training at government-accredited residential academies.

Lewis Hamilton Wins German Grand Prix :

  • Lewis Hamilton took a sensational victory in a thrilling, rain-hit German Grand Prix as Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel crashed out to gift the Mercedes driver a 17-point lead in their championship battle.
  • Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen secured the third position.
