Union Government appoints private person Aashish Chandorkar as the Director at India’s WTO Permanent Mission

  • Union Government has appointed a private person Aashish Chandorkar as Counsellor, in India’s Permanent Mission in the World Trade Organization (WTO) for three years.
  • It is the first time that a private person has been appointed at the Mission. He is the Director of Bengaluru-based policy think tank Smahi Foundation of Policy and Research.
  • The World Trade Organization (WTO) is a 164-member multi-lateral body, which deals with global trade. India is a member of the WTO since 1995.

India ranks 135th in the 2021 Global Peace Index (GPI): Iceland tops the list

  • According to the Sydney-based Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP) report, India has ranked 135th (5th in South Asia) in the 15th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2021.
  • Iceland remains the most peaceful country in the world, a position it has held since 2008. Iceland was followed by New Zealand, Denmark, Portugal and Slovenia.
  • Afghanistan (163rd rank) is the least peaceful country in the world for the fourth consecutive year followed by Yemen, Syria, South Sudan and Iraq.

India retains 43rd rank on IMD’s World Competitiveness Index 2021: Switzerland tops the list

  • According to the Institute for Management Development (IMD) report, India has retained the 43rd spot in the 2021 World Competitiveness Index. India has maintained the 43rd rank for the past three years. The 64-nation list was topped by Switzerland.
  • Switzerland was followed by Sweden (2nd rank), Denmark (3rd rank) and Netherlands (4th rank).
  • Among the BRICS nations, China (16th rank) is followed by India (43rd rank), Russia (45th rank), Brazil (57th rank) and South Africa (62nd rank).
