Government launches new scheme ‘SevaBhoj Yojna’

The Ministry of Culture, Government of India has introduced a new scheme namely ‘SevaBhojYojna‘ with a total outlay of Rs. 325 Crore for Financial Years 2018-19 and 2019-20.

The scheme expects to reimburse the Central Government share of Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) and Integrated Goods and Service Tax (IGST) on purchase of raw items such as ghee, edible oil, atta/maida/rava/flour , rice pulses, sugar, burra/jiggery etc which go into preparation of food/Prasad/langar/bhandara offered free of cost by religious institutions.

The objective of the scheme is to lessen the financial burden of such Charitable Religious Institutions who provide Food/Prasad/Langar (Community Kitchen)/Bhandara free of cost without any discrimination to Public/Devotees. The charitable religious institutions including temples, gurudwara, mosque, church, dharmik ashram, dargah, monasteries, which fulfill the following criteria are eligible for the grant.


Home Minister Launched Online Analytical tool to monitor Forgien Contributions

Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh has launched an Online Analytical Tool to facilitate closer monitoring of the flow and utilisation of foreign contributions received by various organisations registered or permitted under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010.

It would help the stakeholders in  Government to better regulate acceptance and utilisation of foreign contributions.

This web-based tool enables decision-makers in various Departments of Government to scrutinise source of foreign funds and their actual use in India.

There are approximately 25,000 active organisations registered under The FCRA, 2010.  Foreign Contributions worth Rs.18,065 crores were received by such organisations from foreign donors during financial year 2016-17.


1st National Sports University Gets President’s Assent

President Ram Nath Kovind has given his assent to the Union Cabinet’s approval on an ordinance to set up the country’s first national sports university in Manipur.

It is to promote sports education in the areas of sports sciences, sports technology, sports management and sports coaching besides functioning as the national training centre for select sports disciplines by adopting the best international practice.

For setting up the university, 325.90 acres of land has been made available by the Government of Manipur in the west Imphal district of Koutruk.


World Environment Day Celebrations kicked off

The World Environment Day 2018 celebrations is being hosted by India, started from June 1, 2018 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The World Environment Day is observed on June 5 every year.

A conference is on the theme “Plastic Pollution and Management”. It has been organized to mark the beginning of 5-day long celebration of World Environment Day, 2018.


Biannual Indian Air Force Commanders’ Conference inaugurated by Defence Minister

The First biannual IAF Commanders’ Conference of 2018 was inaugurated by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at Air Headquarters (Vayu Bhawan). Minister of State for Defence Dr Subhash Bhamre, Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa were among those who were present at the conference.

Commanders will discuss the operational, maintenance and administrative takeaways identified during the Exercise and the way ahead.

The Defence Minister commended the IAF for its key role in nation building by way of promoting regional connectivity to support UDAN scheme. The IAF has opened up several of its airfields for civil aircraft operations for the scheme.


EAM Sushma Swaraj embarks on five-day visit to South Africa

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj left on a five-day visit to South Africa where she will meet top leadership of the country and attend meetings of BRICS and IBSA.

BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) Foreign Ministers’ meeting is on June 4 and She will also chair a meeting of Foreign Ministers of IBSA (India, Brazil, South Africa).

Swaraj will also attend a series of events marking the 125th anniversary of the historic incident where a young Mahatma Gandhi was thrown out of a train compartment in Pietermaritzburg railway station. The 1893 incident proved to be a turning point in Gandhi’s fight against racial discrimination in South Africa.

Geneva hosts 2018 International Conference on TRIPS- CBD Linkage

The International Conference on TRIPS- CBD Linkage will be held in Geneva on June 7-8, 2018.

It is to revive WTO discussions on issues related to theft of traditional knowledge.Traditional knowledge is a kind of intellectual property which is passed on from generation to generation within a community. It often forms part of a people’s cultural and spiritual identity. In India, the Traditional knowledge includes areas like Ayurveda, Yoga and naturopathy.

The conference is organised jointly by Indian Government, Centre for WTO Studies, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and the South Centre, an inter-governmental organisation based in Geneva.

India Signs MRA In Nursing With Singapore

India has signed the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) in Nursing with Singapore. This is the first MRA being signed by India with any of our FTA partners.

In a major gain for India, Singapore agreed to expand coverage of Indian nursing institutions by recognising seven nursing institutions in the MRA.

India and Singapore agreed to expand the coverage of tariff concessions, liberalize the rules of origin and incorporate new Product Specific Rules (PSRs) to further enhance the trade between the two countries.


India ranks 113rd in “END OF CHILDHOOD INDEX 2018”

India has been placed at 113th position in the list of 175 countries in “End of Childhood Index 2018” indexed by global child rights group, Save the Children.

India has been improved its ranking in the world childhood index up from 116 in 2017, but it has been put in the category of countries characterised by poverty and discrimination against girls.

Singapore and Slovenia are placed at the top sharing the first place in the index and Niger figures at the end of the list at 175.

Kendrick Lamar Receives the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music

Kendrick Lamar Duckworth, an American rapper and songwriter made history when he became the first hip-hop act to win a Pulitzer prize in music for his acclaimed 2017 album “DAMN”.

The Columbia University President Lee C. Bollinger presented Kendrick Lamar with his 2018 Pulitzer Prize.

He also got four Grammys, including best rap album, this year for DAMN.


Assamese Singer Zubeen Garg to be honoured with ‘Hero to Animals Award’

Singer Zubeen Garg will be honoured with the Hero to Animals Award from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India for his recent appeal to end animal sacrifice at the Kamakhya Temple in Assam.

Other recipients of PETA India’s ‘Hero to Animals Award’ include actors Asin, Zarine Khan, Rani Mukerji, Sadaa Sayed and Shilpa Shetty among others.


Vijay Goel Confers FICCI Smart Policing Awards 2018

Statistics and Pragramme Implementation Minister Vijay Goel conferred FICCI Smart Policing Awards 2018 to police officials of central armed police force and states police in New Delhi.

The 3rd edition of the event, which is part of two-day long conference on Homeland Security-Cyber Crime Management, is aimed at showcasing smart initiatives and best practices taken by the police to combat crimes in their respected area.

Over 200 entries were received in various categories ranging from safety for child, women, elders, road and cyber crime and community policing.


PM Modi gives Padma Shri award to former Singaporean diplomat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the Padma Shri award, one of India’s highest civilian awards, to former Singaporean diplomat Tommy Koh.

Koh was among 10 ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) recipients of the prestigious award this year. The award was announced in January 2018 on the occasion of silver jubilee of India ASEAN partnership and our Republic Day

Koh, 80, has served as Singapore’s ambassador to the US and the UN, and as President of the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea in 1981 and 1982.

Amit Khare: I&B New Secretary

Shri Amit Khare, IAS (Jharkhand: 1985) has been assumed charge as Secretary in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting on superannuation of Shri Narendra Kumar Sinha, IAS.

Prior to his appointment, Shri Khare was Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Jharkhand.


Giuseppe Conte Sworn In As Italian PM

New prime minister Giuseppe Conte sworn in to lead populist Italian government.

Conte pledged his new government would “work intensely to realize the political goals of our agreement” and “work with determination to improve the lives of all Italians.”

Conte, a law professor, will head a government of ministers from the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S) and the far-right League Party.

Pedro Sanchez: Spain’s new prime minister

Pedro Sanchez replaces Mariano Rajoy as Spain’s new prime minister. He is the leader of Spain’s opposition socialist PSOE party.

Mariano Rajoy has been ousted as prime minister in a vote of no confidence. He is the great survivor of Spanish politics.

Real Madrid Coach ZindineZidane Quits

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has stepped down from his post. Zidane claimed an unprecedented third consecutive Champions League title when Real beat Liverpool 3-1.

He claimed the first of his hat-trick of European triumphs two years ago when Real Madrid defeated local rivals Atletico Madrid. Zidane won nine major honours as Real coach.
