IIT Roorkee and IMU Visakhapatnam develop fuel-efficient maritime transport solution

  • A collaborative research effort by the Hydropower Simulation Laboratory (HSL) of IIT Roorkee and Indian Maritime University, Visakhapatnam (IMU-V), has resulted in the development of an environment-friendly and cost-efficient maritime transport solution.
  • HSL researchers adjusted the functioning of power sources (diesel-engine-driven induction generators and batteries) of the tugboats so that the load demand could be met while consuming the lowest possible amount of fuel.

SEBI whole-time members SK Mohanty and Ananta Barua get a 2-year extension of their terms

  • The Union Government has extended the tenure of appointment of Santosh Kumar Mohanty as Whole-time Member (WTM) of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for two years beyond 31 July 2021.
  • He had earlier served as the Director in the erstwhile commodity market regulator Forward Markets Commission.
  • The Union Government has also extended the tenure of appointment of Ananta Barua as Whole-time Member (WTM) of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for two years beyond 31 July 2021.
  • He had worked as an advisor at the Bahrain Monetary Agency and the Central Bank of Bahrain between 2004 and 2006.

Tadang Minu becomes the first Indian woman to be appointed as a member of the AIBA’s Coaches Committee

Arunachal Pradesh’s Tadang Minu became the first woman in India and the second Indian to be appointed as a member of the Coaches Committee of the International Boxing Association (AIBA). She is an assistant professor at the Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU).

Indo-American chemist Sumita Mitra was honoured with the prestigious European Inventor Award 2021

  • Indian-American chemist Sumita Mitra has been honoured with the 2021 European Inventor Award in the ‘Non-European Patent Office countries’ category for her application of nanotechnology in dentistry.
  • She is the first to have successfully integrated nanotechnology into dental materials to produce stronger and more aesthetically pleasing dental fillings.

  • Red Bull driver Max Verstappen (Belgium) won the 2021 F1 French Grand Prix title. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton (Britain) came at second position and Red Bull driver Sergio Perez (Mexico) came at the third position.

Ireland all-rounder Kevin O’Brien announces retirement from ODIs

  • The 37-year-old Ireland all-rounder Kevin O’Brien has announced his retirement from one-day internationals. He remains available for Test and T20 cricket.
  • His 50-ball hundred remains the quickest century in Cricket World Cup history. He scored 3,000 runs and took 114 wickets in ODI.
