  • Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Jai Ram Thakur launched dedicated COVID-19 Helpline ‘Mukhyamantri Sewa Sankalp Helpline 1100’ for facilitating the people regarding COVID related issues in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.
  • The callers can call on toll-free number 1100 from 7 am to 10 pm for seeking help regarding COVID-related issues. This initiative will help various issues such as tests, vaccination, home quarantine, medicines, ambulance and Oxygen.

  • Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced the Mukhya Mantri Covid Upchar Yojana (Chief Minister’s Covid Treatment Programme) for free treatment to all those from economically weaker sections in the state.
  • Under this scheme, important decisions have also been taken for free Covid treatment of families possessing Ayushman cards.

SBI and EIB to invest up to Euro 100 million in Indian SMEs focused on climate change and sustainability

  • The European Investment Bank (EIB) and State Bank of India (SBI) entered into a pact to jointly raise Euro 100 million in equity financing into Indian small businesses focused on climate change and sustainability.
  • The MoU was signed on the margins of the European Union-India leaders meeting in Portugal, where both the financial institutions agreed to back the initiative.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi participates in India-EU Leaders Summit 2021

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the much-awaited India-EU Leaders’ Summit with the Heads of 27 EU Member States. The virtual meeting is being hosted by Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa as Portugal currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
  • The leaders of all the 27 EU Member States, as well as the President of the European Council and the European Commission, participated in the meeting.

Sunder Pichai, Punit Renjen and Shantanu Narayen join the global Covid task force to help India

  • Three Indian-American CEOs Sunder Pichai from Google, Punit Renjen from Deloitte and Shantanu Narayen from Adobe have joined the steering committee of the Global Task Force on Pandemic Response to help India successfully fight COVID-19.
  • The task force is a newly formed public-private partnership organised by the US Chamber of Commerce and supported by Business Roundtable.
  • Others who were added to the list are Mark Suzman, CEO of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Joshua Bolten, president and CEO of Business Roundtable and Suzanne Clark, president and CEO of US Chamber of Commerce.

Tamil Nadu government appoints Irai Anbu as its Chief Secretary

  • Senior bureaucrat V Irai Anbu was appointed as the chief secretary of Tamil Nadu. He succeeded Rajeev Ranjan. He is a 1985 batch IAS officer, was additional chief secretary/director of Anna Institute of Management and director-general of Training.
  • As per a government order, T Udhayachandran, commissioner of archaeology, P Umanath, MS Shanmugam, and Anu George were appointed as Secretaries I, II, III, and IV to assist the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Anupam Kher bags best actor award at new york city international film festival

  • Bollywood actor Anupam Kher won the best actor award at the New York City International Film Festival for the short film titled ‘Happy Birthday’. This film also won the Best Short Film award at the film festival. The short film was directed by Prasad Kadam and produced by FNP Media.

Tahera Qutbuddin becomes the first Indian to win the Arab world Nobel prize

  • Tahera Qutbuddin, a professor of Arabic Literature at the University of Chicago became the first person of Indian origin to win the 15th Sheikh Zayed Book Award for her latest book “Arabic Oration – Art and Function”. The award is considered to be the Nobel Prize of the Arab world.

BCCI scorer KK Tiwari passed away at 52

  • BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) scorer Krishan Kumar Tiwari passed away due to Covid at the AIIMS in Jhajhar, Haryana. He covered four Tests, five One-Day Internationals, over 60 Ranji Trophy matches and over 50 Indian Premier League He also officiated as an umpire in local cricket since 1985.

Renowned sculptor and Rajya Sabha MP Raghunath Mohapatra passed away at 78

  • Renowned sculptor and Rajya Sabha MP, Raghunath Mohapatra passed away at the age of 78. He was awarded Padma Shri by the then President of India, Fakiruddin Ali Ahmed in 1976 and also received the Padma Bhushan award in 2001. He was also awarded Padma Vibhusan in 2013.

Olympic gold medallist hockey player Ravinder Pal Singh passed away at the age of 61

  • Former Indian hockey player and member of the 1980 Moscow Olympics winning side Ravinderpal Singh passed away at the age of 61. He was also part of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics – the Sitapur-born Singh was only 20 when he became an Olympic gold medallist at Moscow, the last Olympic medal for Indian hockey.

  • Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton (Britain) won the 2021 Spanish Grand Prix. This is the fifth successive Spanish Grand Prix title of Lewis Hamilton and the third win of this season.
  • Lewis Hamilton was followed by Max Verstappen (Netherlands) and Valtteri Bottas (Finland).

Aryna Sabalenka beats Ashleigh Barty to win 2021 Madrid Open

  • Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus defeated the World No. 1 Barty of Australia to win the 2021 Madrid Open women’s single title for the first time. This was Sabalenka’s 10th career title but her first on clay and she raised to number four in the world rankings.
  • In the women’s doubles final, Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova from the Czech Republic defeated Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Demi Schuurs of France.

Alexander Zverev beats Berrettini to win his second Madrid Open title

  • World number six Alexander Zverev of Germany defeated Matteo Berrettini of Italy to win his second Madrid Open title and fourth ATP Masters 1000

Rafael Nadal and Naomi Osaka win top Laureus sports awards

  • Tennis players Rafael Nadal and Naomi Osaka picked up the Laureus Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards with football star Mohamed Salah and Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton also recognised.
  • World number two Nadal claimed his fourth Laureus award as he was recognised for his 13th French Open and record-equalling 20th Osaka won the US Open for the second time and has four majors is now a two-time Laureus winner.
  • Patrick Mahomes took the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award.
