MSDE recognises INS Shivaji as the Centre of Excellence in Marine Engineering

  • Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has recognised INS Shivaji as the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in the field of Marine Engineering (ME).
  • This recognition was given to INS Shivaji after a thorough examination of the infrastructure and facilities available, as well as the training provided to improve the skills of Indian Navy personnel, friendly foreign navies and the entire eco-system.
  • INS Shivaji is an Indian naval station in Lonavala, Maharashtra.

 

SIDBI sanctions ₹ 837 crores to support MSME cluster projects in Odisha

  • The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has sanctioned ₹ 837 crores under its SIDBI Cluster Development Fund Scheme (SCDF) for the development of 18 MSME infrastructure projects in Odisha.
  • The projects include the development of five new MSME parks, the construction of 11 workers’ hostels and two projects to support MSME infrastructure.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das lays the foundation stone of the learning and development centre (LDC) of BRBNMPL in Mysuru, Karnataka

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das laid the foundation stone for the establishment of a Learning and Development Centre (LDC) of the Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited (BRBNMPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of RBI in Mysuru, Karnataka.
  • This centre will facilitate human resource capacity building in the currency production ecosystem of India and emerge as a global centre of excellence.

  • Robert Abela was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Malta after his Labour Party won the Malta general election recently held.
  • He was administered the oath of office during a ceremony at the Palace in Valletta presided by President George Vella.
  • His Labour Party won the general election with 1 per cent of the vote, against the Nationalist Party’s (PN) 41.7 per cent.
  • This is the Labour Party’s third consecutive general election win since 2013.

Philippines and the United States hold their biggest military exercises named ‘Balikatan 2022’

  • The Philippines and the United States kicked off their biggest joint military exercise named ‘Balikatan 2022’ in Luzon, Philippines. This military exercise has been held since 2015.
  • This annual ‘Balikatan 2022’ (shoulder-to-shoulder) exercises involve 8,900 troops and will include live-fire exercises and training with amphibious assault vehicles.

International Labour Organization elects Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo as its new Director-General

  • Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo was elected as the eleventh Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO). He became the first African to take the post. He replaced Guy Rider.
  • Houngbo is currently the President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). He served as the Prime Minister of Togo from 2008 to 2012.

GDP Predictions

ICRA revises India’s FY23 GDP growth at 7.2 per cent

  • Ratings agency ICRA revised India’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth estimate for the fiscal year 2023 (FY23) to 7.2 per cent from 8 per cent estimated earlier as rising fuel and commodity prices due to the Russia–Ukraine conflict are expected to impact domestic demand.
  • Earlier, it had revised India’s economic growth estimates for FY22 at 8.5 per cent.

 

Agreements and MoUs Signed

Union Ministry of Defence signs an MoU with L&T for two multipurpose vessels

  • Union Ministry of Defence has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for the acquisition of two multi-purpose vessels (MPVs) for the Indian Navy at an overall cost of ₹ 887 crores under the ‘Buy-Indian’
  • The MPVs will be the first of its kind platform, constructed to provide a cost-effective solution to meet a variety of requirements of the Indian Navy.
  • These vessels would also be capable of towing ships and rendering humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) support with limited hospital ship capability.

Petascale Supercomputer PARAM Shakti inaugurated at IIT Kharagpur

  • IIT Kharagpur has unveiled a Petascale Supercomputer ‘PARAM Shakti’ in its campus. Petascale computing refers to computing systems capable of calculating at least 1015 floating-point operations per second (1 peta FLOPS).
  • This supercomputer was dedicated to India under the Indian government’s National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), a joint initiative of the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

IFS officer Renu Singh was appointed as the Director of the Forest Research Institute

  • Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has appointed Renu Singh as the next Director of the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. She was the institute’s second woman director.
  • Renu Singh replaced S. Rawat. She is a 1990 batch Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer.

 

FedEx announces Indian-born Raj Subramaniam as new CEO

  • American courier delivery company FedEx has announced Indian-born Rajesh Subramaniam as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
  • He replaced Frederick W. Smith, who is the current Executive Chairman of FedEx.

  • Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone was named as one of the awardees of the TIME100 Impact Awards 2022.

  • She has been honoured at the TIME100 Impact Awards for the second time in her career.

Ajay Jayaram retires from international badminton

  • Former world number thirteen Indian shuttler Ajay Jayaram has retired from international badminton after a two-decade-long professional career. He was part of the Indian badminton team, which won a bronze at the Asia Team Championships 2016.
  • Jayaram is the first Indian to win a medal at the Korean Open. He had won the Dutch Open twice besides finishing runner-up at the Korea Open Super Series in 2015.

 

India won two medals at the World Table Tennis Contender Doha 2022 Championship in Doha, Qatar

  • India finished with two medals (silver and bronze) at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender 2022 championship was held in Doha, Qatar.
  • Mixed Doubles pair of Manika Batra and Gnanasekaran Sathiyan won a silver medal. Achanta Sharath Kamal won a bronze medal in the men’s singles event in the World Table Tennis Contender 2022.
