Prime Minister Narendra Modi releases the 8th instalment worth over Rs. 20,000 crore under PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the 8th instalment of over 20,000 crore to more than 9.5 crore farmer-beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme via video-conferencing. West Bengal joined the scheme and about 7 lakh Bengal farmers received their first installment.
  • Under the PM-KISAN scheme, a financial benefit of 6000 per year is provided to 14 crore eligible beneficiary farmer families annually, payable in three equal 4-monthly installments of Rs. 2000 each.

ADB commits a record $3.92 billion loan to India for 13 projects in 2020

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has committed a record $3.92 billion in sovereign loans for 13 projects to India in 2020, including USD 1.8 billion in COVID-19 related projects to support the government’s pandemic response.
  • As part of the pandemic support to India, ADB has provided emergency assistance to contain the disease and establish social protection measures for relief to the poor and other vulnerable groups.

India virtually hosts the 1st BRICS Employment Working Group Meeting

  • The prime agenda for the meeting were Promoting Social Security Agreements amongst BRICS Nations, Formalisation of labour markets, Participation of women in labour force and Gig and platform workers – Role in labour market.

DBS Bank launches Asia’s first bank-backed crypto trust service

  • Singapore-based DBS Bank launches Asia’s first bank-backed trust solution for cryptocurrencies as demand for digital assets increases.
  • The bank is offering its clients the ability to invest and manage up to four assets through the bank’s wholly-owned, licensed trust company DBS Trustee.
  • The service applies only to cryptocurrencies hosted on the digital exchange: Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin Cash and XRP.

Groww acquires Indiabulls’ mutual fund for Rs. 175 crore

  • Online investment platform Groww signed an agreement with Indiabulls Housing Finance to acquire its asset management company for 175 crores, paving the way for the Bengaluru-based fintech startup to enter the mutual fund business.
  • The Groww-Indiabulls Mutual Fund deal was approved by the capital markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) as well as other regulators.

  • Footwear major Bata India has appointed Gunjan Shah as its new chief executive officer. He has been serving at Britannia Industries as its chief commercial officer. He replaces Sandeep Kataria, who was elevated as the global CEO of Bata Brands.

Former Cricketer Ramesh Powar was appointed as the head coach of the India Women Cricket Team

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former Indian cricketer Ramesh Powar as the head coach of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team. He replaced WV Raman.
  • He recently coached the Mumbai senior team that won the Vijay Hazare Trophy and has worked at the National Cricket Academy as a Bowling Coach.

Nagaland’s  Nuklu Phom wins prestigious Whitley Award 2021 for his ‘biodiversity peace corridor’

  • Nagaland conservationist, Y Nuklu Phom has won the prestigious ‘Whitley Awards 2021’ for his efforts towards creating the “Biodiversity Peace Corridor”, a network of community-owned forests in Nagaland.
  • He is the only Indian to win the prestigious award — awarded annually to individuals from the Global South by UK-based charity the Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN).

Nepal’s Mingma Tenji Sherpa sets world record by climbing Mount Everest twice in the shortest time

  • A 43-year-old Nepali mountain guide, Mingma Tenji Sherpa has created a world record by climbing Mount Everest twice in the shortest time (four days) within a season.
  • Previously, Indian mountaineer Anshu Jamsenpa had held the record for fastest dual ascents on Everest, scaling the mountain twice in 118 hours and 15 minutes in 2017.

Times Group chairperson Indu Jain passed away at 84

  • Indu Jain, chairman of the Times Group, lifelong spiritual seeker, pioneering philanthropist and passionate proponent of women’s rights passed away due to COVID-related complications. She was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2016 for Trade and Industry.
