World Thyroid Day – 25 May

  • World Thyroid Day is observed annually on 25 May. The day is to create awareness about the importance of Thyroid and the prevention and treatment of thyroid related diseases.
  • This day was established in 2008 as a part of the campaign led by the European Thyroid Association (ETA) and the American Thyroid Association (ATA), followed by the Latin American Thyroid Society (LATS) and Asia Oceania Thyroid Association (AOTA) to commemorate the patients with Thyroid diseases and doctors and physicians who treat them.

Union Corporate Affairs Ministry launches the first phase of the MCA21 V3.0 portal

  • Union Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs Anurag Singh Thakur launched the first phase of MCA21 V3.0, comprising of a revamped website, new email services for ministry officials as well as two new electronic modules for books and consultation.
  • The portal provides easy and secure access to Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) services to corporate entities, professionals and the public.

Cheetahs to be re-introduced at Kuno National Park in Madya Pradesh

  • Cheetah, the world’s fastest land animal, which was declared extinct in India in 1952, is expected to be re-introduced into the country in November 2021 at the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh.
  • Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has approved a budget outlay of the ‘Project Cheetah’ as 1,400 lakhs for 2021 fiscal.

Italy virtually hosts the G20 Global Health Summit on the global health crisis

  • The Italian Presidency and the European Commission jointly hosted the G20 Global Health Summit in Rome, Italy. The summit adopted the agenda to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic. It also decided to develop and endorse a Rome Declaration of principles.

Fiame Naomi becomes the first female Prime Minister of Samoa

  • Fiame Naomi Mata’afa became the first female Prime Minister of Samoa. She replaces Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi of the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP). She was also the first female Deputy Prime Minister of Samoa from 2016 to 2020.

Barclays revises India’s GDP growth forecast to 9.2% for FY22

  • A British brokerage, Barclays, revised India’s GDP growth estimate by a sharp 0.80 per cent to 2 per cent for fiscal 2021–22 (FY22). Barclays reasoned that India will increase economic costs by at least a further $42.6 billion, assuming another round of similarly stringent lockdowns is imposed for eight weeks.

  • The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) had partnered with PayCore, Turkey’s global payment solutions company, as one of the certified partners for RuPay SoftPOS to drive cashless payments across India.
  • RuPay SoftPOS enables merchants to accept payments securely from contactless cards, mobile wallets, and wearables just with their mobile phones.
  • Millions of merchants now can convert their Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled smartphones into a POS machine to accept contactless payments through RuPay SoftPOS.

FlexiLoans partners with Vivriti Capital to disburse loans worth Rs. 300 crores to MSMEs

  • Fintech platform com has partnered with Vivriti Capital to provide working capital financing of over Rs. 300 crores to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across India.
  • MSMEs can apply for loans online and receive in-principal approval within 24–48 hours digitally without manual intervention.
  • The partnership will be powered by FlexiLoans.com’s technology and credit underwriting platform ‘BiFrost’, which has been integrated with Vivriti’s Co-lending platform ‘CredAvenue’.

IIT Ropar develops unique detector ‘FakeBuster’ to detect imposters attending a virtual conference

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar, Punjab and Australia-based Monash University had developed a unique detector named ‘FakeBuster’ to detect imposters attending a virtual conference without anyone’s knowledge.
  • It can also find out faces manipulated on social media to defame or make a joke of someone.

  • The Union Government has appointed Subodh Kumar Jaiswal as the Director of CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) for two years.
  • He is a Maharashtra cadre IPS officer of the 1985 batch. Currently, he is working as the Director-General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

Indian-origin Anvee Bhutani was elected as the President of Oxford Students Union

  • Anvee Bhutani, an Indian-origin student from Magdalen College at the University of Oxford, has won the Student Union (SU) byelection for the 2021–22 academic year.
  • She was the Co-Chair of the Campaign for Racial Awareness and Equality (CRAE) at Oxford SU and President of the Oxford India Society.

Nageshwar Reddy becomes the first Indian doctor to win Rudolf Schindler Award

  • Padma Bhushan awardee Nageshwar Reddy has been bestowed with the Rudolf V. Schindler Award from The American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), one of the apex bodies in the world of GI endoscopy.
  • He became the first Indian doctor to receive the prestigious award. He is also the Chairman of AIG Hospitals in Hyderabad, Telangana.

  • A new book titled “Nehru, Tibet and China” authored by Avtar Singh Bhasin is set to be released in June 2021. 1971 war hero Col. Panjab Singh passed away at 79

  • Decorated veteran of the 1971 war Panjab Singh passed away at the age of 79 in Chandigarh. He was commissioned into the 6th Batallion of the Sikh Regiment on 16 December 1967. He was also conferred with the Vir Chakra Award.
