Department of Atomic Energy to build India’s first reactor on PPP model

• The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) will be constructing India’s first research reactor on the public-private partnership (PPP) DAE is shortlisting the private enterprises for a partnership in the project.
• The research reactor will be designed by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), will produce radioisotopes, and is expected to bring down the costs of nuclear medicine that is used in cancer treatment in India.

• Union Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh launched the SeHAT (‘Services e-Health Assistance & Teleconsultation) OPD Portal via video conferencing. The portal will help the Indian Armed Forces in providing telemedicine services.

• Punjab Government has announced to rename the Mohali International Hockey Stadium, Sector 63, after triple Olympian and Padma Shri awardee Balbir Singh Senior. The stadium will now be known as Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium.

• The Union Cabinet has approved the opening of a new Consulate General of India in Addu City, the Maldives, in 2021. India and Maldives share ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious and commercial links steeped in antiquity.
• The opening of a Consulate General in Addu City will help augment India’s diplomatic presence in the Maldives and make it commensurate with the existing and aspired level of engagement.

India set to launch mobile tech platform ‘UNITE AWARE’ for UN peacekeepers

• India will launch ‘UNITE AWARE’, a mobile tech platform, in August 2021 for the United Nations Peacekeepers to improve their safety and security in the line of duty.
• India, in partnership with the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the Department of Operational Support, has been working towards developing a mobile tech platform ‘UNITE AWARE’ that helps increase situational awareness and provides terrain-related information to peacekeepers.

WHO and Switzerland to launch the first WHO BioHub Facility for pathogen storage

• The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Swiss Confederation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch the first WHO BioHub Facility as part of the WHO BioHub System.
• This facility will enhance the rapid sharing of viruses and other pathogens between laboratories and partners globally.

• Former Narcotics Commissioner of India and a retired officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs), Jagjit Pavadia, was elected as the President of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB).
• She is the first Indian to be heading the Vienna-based organisation and the second woman to hold this office.
• The INCB is a Vienna based quasi-judicial body responsible for the implementation of the United Nations international drug control convention.

Freedom Fighter HS Doreswamy passed away at 103

• Eminent Gandhian and freedom fighter HS Doreswamy passed away at the age of 103 in Bengaluru. He also participated in the Mysuru Chalo movement to compel the Mysuru Maharaja to accede to the Indian state post-independence.

Four-time Assam MLA Majendra Narzary passed away at 68

• Majendra Narzary, an MLA from Assam, passed away due to post COVID-19 complications. He was four-time MLA from the Gossaigaon assembly constituency in Assam’s Kokrajhar district.
