RBI approves LIC to hike its stake in Kotak Mahindra Bank to 9.99%

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) gave approval for the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) to increase its stake in Kotak Mahindra Bank to up to 99 per cent from 4.96 per cent.
  • The RBI norms mandate that every person or an entity who intends to acquire private banks of more than a 5% stake has to take prior approval from the central bank (RBI).

HSBC India launches first recycled PVC plastic credit card in India

  • HSBC India has launched India’s first credit card made from recycled PVC plastic.
  • This is a part of a new HSBC Group to create sustainable cards across all of its global locations to meet the bank’s international commitments to sustainability and a net-zero future.
  • This credit card is made from 85% recycled plastic. The new recycled PVC credit cards will help save 3.18 g of plastic waste per card, in addition, to lower overall carbon emission.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposes a ₹1 crore penalty on the Union Bank of India

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a ₹1 crore penalty on the Union Bank of India for deficiencies in regulatory compliance as per the directions issued under the Reserve Bank of India (Fraud – Classification and Reporting by Commercial Banks and Select FIs) Directions, 2016 and Guidelines on Sale of Stressed Assets by Banks.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) approves a $125 million loan for water supply and sanitation projects in Uttarakhand

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $125 million loan to improve access to quality water supply and sanitation services in Uttarakhand, India.
  • A 136 km water pipe system will be built in South Dehradun as part of this project to repair damaged water networks.

Paytm Payments Services Limited (PPSL) launches ‘card-on-file’ tokenisation services

  • Paytm Payments Services Limited (PPSL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Paytm, has launched a Paytm Token Gateway, which provides a ‘card-on-file’ tokenisation solution.
  • Paytm, has partnered with platforms such as Myntra, Oyo, Domino’s and payment giants like Visa, Mastercard and RuPay.
  • With this partnership, the card on file tokenisation service will be available for all Paytm consumers and merchants.
  • As per the RBI’s guidelines, all merchants/e-commerce stores have to comply with the new card-on-file tokenisation feature by 31 December 2021.

American music composer Stephen Sondheim passed away

  • Veteran American music composer Stephen Sondheim passed away at the age of 91.
  • He has won Tony Awards and a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre in 2008.
  • He also won a Pulitzer Prize for his song ‘Sunday in the Park’ and an Academy Award for ‘Sooner or Later’.
