  • Election Commission of India is organizing a three-day International Virtual Election Visitors Programme for Foreign Election Management Bodies and Organizations in the context of the ongoing Bihar Legislative Assembly Elections.

 

  • International Election Visitor Programmes in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, elections for a few State Assemblies in February-March 2017 and Lok Sabha Elections last year.

Andhra Pradesh Planning to Install 400 EV Charging Stations across the state:

  • The state government of Andhra Pradesh has decided to set up 400 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the state to promote the usage of electric vehicles. The EV stations will be built under the first phase of the “Go Electric” Campaign.

  • President Ram Nath Kovind promulgated the Arbitration and Conciliation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020 to further amend Arbitration and Conciliation Act 1996. 

 

  • The Ordinance aims to ensure that all the stakeholders get an opportunity to seek unconditional stay of enforcement of arbitral awards where the underlying arbitration agreement or contract or making of the arbitral award are induced by fraud or corruption.

 

Ministry of Finance releases Rs 6,000 Cr to states under special window for meeting GST compensation shortfall:

  • Ministry of Finance is releasing Rs 6,000 crore as the second tranche to 16 States and 3 Union Territories under the Special Window to states for meeting the GST compensation cess shortfall. 

 

  • Sixteen States and Three UTs have so far opted for the Special Window under Option I and the finance ministry has facilitated loans of Rs 12,000 crore to date under the special window, stated a statement by the Ministry of Finance.

 

Piyush Goyal Co-chairs 8th Meeting of India-UAE High Level Joint Task Force on Investments:

  • The 8th meeting of the India-UAE High Level Joint Task Force on Investments (“Joint Task Force”) was hosted virtually by India

 

  • The meeting was co-chaired by Minister of Railways, Commerce & Industry and Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal and His Highness Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Member of the Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

 

Maharashtra government inks Rs 35,000-crore MoUs with 15 companies:

  • Maharashtra government inked MoUs worth around Rs 35,000 crore with 15 companies even as Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray called for attracting over Rs 1 lakh crore investments this year to the state.

 

  • The MoUs worth Rs 34,850 crore were signed between the state-run Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and the 15 companies and they are expected to create 23,182 jobs.

  • Union Minister of State (IC) for Tourism & Culture Prahlad Singh Patel inaugurated the “Tourist Facilitation Centre” facility constructed under the project “Development of Guruvayur, Kerala under PRASHAD Scheme of the Ministry of Tourism at the cost of Rs. 11.57 Crores through Virtual Platform.

 

  • The National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) was launched by the Ministry of Tourism in the year 2014-15.

 

Housing ministry Hardeep Singh Puri launches youth-centric, environment-friendly ‘Nurturing Neighbourhoods Challenge’:

  • Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched Nurturing Neighbourhoods Challenge, under which cities will be provided technical assistance and capacity-building to re-imagine parks and create accessible, safe, walkable streets for children and families.

 

  • Puri also launched data maturity assessment framework (DMAF) to evaluate data ecosystems of cities and training programme for City Data Officers (CDOs) of 100 Smart Cities.

 

ADB approves USD 132.8 million loan to enhance power distribution network in Meghalaya:

 

  • Asian Development Bank has approved USD 132.8 million loan to improve and upgrade the power distribution network in Meghalaya stated by Meghalaya Power Minister James PK Sangma. The fund will help in improving the distribution system & financial sustainability of the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL).

 

  • Under this scheme, the Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) and the Power Finance Corporation would extend special long term transition loans up to 10 years to the discom on certain conditions.

  • Armstrong Fernando, a fisherman from Pamban used to listen to the radio since his childhood. Fernando has studied till 8th standard, he grew up in the industry and travelLed to various places to listen to the community radio for farmers.

World’s Biggest Pink Diamond Mine ‘Argyle Mine’ in Australia, Shuts Down After Exhausting ‘Economic Reserves’:

 

  • The World’s largest pink diamond mine has shut its doors after exhausting its reserves of the expensive gems after 40 years of a successful business, stated by global mining giant Rio Tinto.

 

  • Globally, Argyle is the fourth-largest diamond-producing mine in the world by volume. It produced more than 90 percent of the world’s pink diamonds.

India and Gulf Cooperation Council Troika hold annual Political Dialogue in virtual mode:

 

  • Union Minister of External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar led the Indian delegation of the virtual Annual Political Dialogue meeting between India and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Troika. Senior representatives from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar also participated in the meeting. 
  • India and The GCC agreed to continue their commitment so as to reform the multilateral institutions. Both the sides agreed to work together to address challenges including Covid-19 pandemic, Terrorism, climate change and sustainable development.

 

Cabinet approves MoU between India and UK on cooperation in the field of Telecommunication:

  • Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has given its approval for signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Communications of the Republic of India and the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS) of United Kingdom Government on cooperation in the field of Telecommunications and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).

 

  • The MoU will contribute in strengthening bilateral cooperation and mutual understanding in the field of Telecommunications/ICTs. Post-Brexit, the MoU is also aiming for enhanced scope of cooperation and opportunities for India.

 

India Hands Over Another NPR 1 Billion Tranche of Nepal Housing Reconstruction Project:

  • Indian Ambassador to Nepal Vinay Mohan Kwatra handed over a cheque of NPR 1 billion to the Nepal government as reimbursement of Nepal Housing Reconstruction Project.
  • India had announced the reconstruction drive in Nuwakot and Gorkha District of Himalayan Nation after it was severely hit by 2015 earthquake. India has pledged to construct a total of 50,000 houses in two districts where the UNDP and UNOPS are providing the technical and other consultation supports.

  • Visa announced the deployment of a PCI certified Tap to Phonecard acceptance solution along with DigitSecure and HDFC Bank. It enables merchants to securely accept contactless card payments in seconds through an app on their NFC (Near-field communication)-enabled Android smartphones.

 

  • ‘Make in India’ goal of local innovation, DigitSecure is the first company based in Asia Pacific to receive PCI security certification for deploying this technology.

National Payments Corporation of India launches ‘RuPay Festive Carnival’:

 

  • National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) unveiled discounts up to 65 per cent on purchase of various branded items using RuPay card.
  • The ‘RuPay Festive Carnival’ will provide compelling benefits and attractive discounts to RuPay users, aimed at encouraging safe, contactless and cashless payments.

 

AU Small Finance Bank enters into agreement with Care Health Insurance for Health Insurance Products:

  • AU Small Finance Bank entered into agreement with Care Health Insurance Company (Religare Health Insurance Company Limited) for health insurance products as Corporate Agent.
  • The Bank has been issued certificate of registration CA0515 under Registration of Corporate Agents – Regulations, 2015 by Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) and Bank has entered into agreement with Care Health Insurance Company for health insurance products.

India Successfully Test Fires Advanced version of DRDO’s Pinaka Rockets from Integrated Test Range, Chandipur off the coast of Odisha:

  • An enhanced version of the Pinaka Mk-1 missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was successfully flight-tested from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha.
  • A total of six rockets were launched in series and all the tests met complete mission objectives. Pinaka rockets, named after the bow of Lord Shiva, are part of the multi-barrel rocket launcher systems.

Second batch of three Rafale fighter jets lands at Jamnagar Air Base in Gujarat:

  • The second batch of three Rafale aircraft landed at Jamnagar Air Base in Gujarat. The aircrafts got airborne from Istres airbase in France and flew non-stop for over eight hours. They covered a distance of over 3700 nautical miles with three in-flight refuellings.

IIT Roorkee develops world’s first specific bacterial biosensor for detecting environmental detergent pollutant:

  • A five-member team of researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee have developed the world’s first specific reliable bacterial biosensor to detect the presence of common environmental pollutant- Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (SDS). 
  • SDS is extensively used in soaps, toothpaste, creams, shampoo, laundry detergents in households, agricultural operations, laboratories and industries. IIT Roorkee also developed a whole-cell biosensor using Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 strain as a framework (chassis).

Indian School of Business and Ministry of Railways enters into strategic partnership to improve Operational Efficiency:

  • Ministry of Railways and the Indian School of Business (ISB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a strategic partnership. It was signed by Vinod Kumar Yadav, Chairman, Railway Board and Professor Rajendra Srivastava, Dean, ISB, in the presence of Railway Board Members & faculty members of ISB.
  • Indian Railways will provide passengers-related data, train operations-related data, freight data and asset-related data to ISB for the analysis.

Industry veteran Jagbir Singh joins Vodafone Idea as Chief Technology Officer:

 

  • Telecom operator providing services Vodafone Idea Ltd under the brand Vi, has appointed Jagbir Singh as Chief Technology Officer (CTO). He was also involved with very large 4G network rollouts and operations. He will be replacing Vishant Vora.

 

  • Singh worked as Group Chief Technology Information Officer at Smartfren Telecom, Indonesia, responsible for Network, IT /digital platforms and enterprise business.

Tanzania President John Magufuli Won 2nd Term: 

  • President of Tanzania John Magufuli had won a second five-year term. National Electoral Commission stated that Mr. Magufuli had received over 12.5 million of the 14 million valid votes counted. John Magufuli was elected as the President in 2015 and his CCM party has been in power since the independence of Tanzania from British in 1961.

NDDB Chairman Dilip Rath elected to the board of International Dairy Federation:

 

  • Chairman of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) Dilip Rath has been unanimously elected to the Board of International Dairy Federation (IDF). As Member Secretary of Indian National Committee and as a member of the Standing Committee on Dairy Policy and Economics, Rath has been associated with IDF for the last 10 years.

  • Veteran movie director Hariharan bagged the prestigious JC Daniel Award, the Kerala government’s highest honour, for his “Outstanding contribution to Malayalam cinema”. The award carries a purse of Rs 5 lakh, a citation, and a sculpture.

Veteran Kannada actor Somashekar Rao passes away at 86:

  • Veteran Kannada film and theatre actor HG Somashekar Rao died after a heart attack.
  • Somashekar had appeared in more than 60 movies during his career spanning about five decades.
  • He made his big screen debut with 1975 Kannada film Geejagana Goodu.
  • He has written 25 books, including an autobiography.

‘Fareb’ actor Faraaz Khan passes away at 46:

  • Bollywood actor Faraaz Khan has passed away.
  • He was undergoing treatment for neurological disorder in Bengaluru.

Tamil Nadu tops Indian states in new investments in H1FY21: CARE Ratings:

 

  • Tamil Nadu leads Indian states in attracting investments during the first half of FY21, having managed to grab 16 per cent of the funds that came into India during the period, according to CARE Ratings.

 

  • Andhra Pradesh garnered 11 per cent, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Karnataka have garnered seven per cent each, while the balance went to the other states. Last year Tamil Nadu took third spot, stated CARE Ratings sourcing CMIE data.

  • Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi was apprised of signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bengaluru and the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) and the GRANTECAN, S.A. (GTC), Spain to develop scientific and technical collaborations in astronomy field.

Cabinet nod for inking MoU between India and UK for cooperation in medical product regulation:

  • Union Cabinet has given its approval for signing an MoU between the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and the United Kingdom Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency for cooperation in medical products regulation for pharmacovigilance.
  • The main areas of cooperation between the two regulatory authorities include exchange of safety information, including pharmacovigilance where there is a particular safety concern related to the other party.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta das Chairs 40th SAARC Central Bank Governors Meet:

 

  • Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das and other central bank governors in the South East Asian nations virtually attends 40th Meeting of the SAARCFINANCE Governors’ Group.
  • Mr Das also inaugurated the SAARCFINANCE Sync, a closed user group secure communication network. SAARCFINANCE is a network of central bank governors and finance secretaries of the SAARC region.

 

Bangladesh and US launch joint naval exercise CARAT Bangladesh 2020:

  • Bangladesh and US navies launched the ‘Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Bangladesh 2020’ to expand relationships and broaden maritime awareness between the two countries.
  • The exercise demonstrates the U.S.’s continuing commitment to work with the Bangladesh military to address shared maritime security concerns in the region and strengthen partnership to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

  • Reserve Bank of India will evaluate the impact of multi-media public awareness campaign ‘RBI Kehta Hai’, which was launched in 14 languages to educate the public about safe banking and financial practices.
  • ‘RBI Kehta Hai’ was the first even 360-degree campaign initiated by the central bank using all mass media, including media such as television, radio, newspapers, hoardings, web banners, gifs, social media and SMS.

ICICI Bank launches banking stack ‘Mine’ for millennial customers:

  • ICICI Bank launched India’s first comprehensive banking programme for millennial customers, in the age bracket of 18 years to 35 years. 

 

  • Inspired by ‘Millennial Network’, the proposition is called ‘ICICI Bank Mine’ and offers an instant savings account, a feature driven iMobile application that offers investment guidance to suit the demand of millennials, curated credit and debit card, instant personal loans & overdrafts, and even an experiential branch with social engagement space.

Bank of Baroda launches employee-assistance programme:

 

  • Bank of Baroda (BoB) has introduced a new employee-centric initiative, called Employee Assistance Programme, aimed at helping employees deal with personal and professional issues through psychological counselling and consulting.

 

  • BoB has introduced this as a pilot project in the Mumbai Zone and its corporate office. This 24×7 service is “Safe, Non-Judgmental and Highly Confidential” and can be availed not only by the employees but their family members too.

Prasar Bharati and BISAG-N Sign MoU to launch education TV channels:

  • India’s largest public broadcasting agency Prasar Bharati and Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-Informatics (BISAG- State level agency by Govt of Gujarat) signed a MoU. Under the Memorandum of Understanding, all the 51 DTH education channels will be available as DD co-branded channels to all DD Free Dish viewer.

SBI Card Ties Up with Paytm to Launch Co-Branded Credit Cards:

  • Credit card company SBI Card have tied up with Paytm to launch co-branded credit card. Available in two variants Paytm SBI Card and Paytm SBI Card SELECT the products have been launched on the Visa platform.
  • The partnership aims to bring ‘New to Credit’ users into the formal economy and empowering them to control their finances.

IIT Madras to Collaborate with Japanese Firm DG TAKANO to bring in new water technologies to India:

  • International Centre for Clean Water (ICCW) is collaborates with DG TAKANO, a Japanese firm, to introduce new clean water technologies in India and to develop innovative products that will solve existing societal and environmental challenges in the area of clean and safe drinking water globally. 
  • The main Aim is to introduce new clean water technologies in India.

NMDC and IIT Hyderabad launch incubation and fellowship program to support deep-tech entrepreneurs:

  • National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) in association with IIT Hyderabad has launched an Incubation and Fellowship program.
  • NICE Program (NMDC Innovation and Incubation Centre) is a joint program between NMDC and i-TIC Foundation, a startup support system at IIT Hyderabad that aims to support deep-tech startups by providing them incubation and fellowship support.

Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati to head panel to look into TRP system of TV channels:

  • The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has constituted a four-member committee to review the guidelines on television rating agencies headed by Shashi Shekhar Vempati, CEO of Prasar Bharati. This comes after the Mumbai police investigations revealed that a few news channels had tampered with the ratings.

 

  • The committee will be responsible to address the ‘needs of the stakeholders’ and make necessary recommendations for a rating system that shall be ‘robust, transparent and accountable’.

 

HDFC Bank appoints Ramesh Lakshminarayanan as Chief Information Officer:

  • HDFC Bank has appointed Ramesh Lakshminarayanan, as its new Group Head Information Technology. Ramesh has been designated as Chief Information Officer (CIO). He will be responsible for taking the Bank’s technological transformation journey to the next level.

Former Delhi Chief Secretary M.M. Kutty to be the chairperson of Air Quality Commission:

 

  • Former Chief Secretary of Delhi M M Kutty was appointed as the chairperson of the Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas. Arvind Kumar Nautiyal from Ministry of Environment to be a full-time member. They have been appointed for a term of three years.

Dr Susanta Kar honoured with “Prof. A N Bhaduri Memorial Lecture Award-2020″ by Society of Biological Chemists:

 

  • Society of Biological Chemists (India) has chosen Dr Susanta Kar, Senior Scientist, Molecular Parasitology and Immunology, CSIR-CDRI, Lucknow for this year’s Prof.A N Bhaduri Memorial Lecture Award 2020.

 

  • DR. Susanta Kar’s research group studied the interaction of Leishmania with immune cells like macrophages, dendritic cells and T cells and the fate of these interactions on modulation of various intracellular signaling cascades that ultimately affect immune response/infection progression.

Ministry of Water Resources to award Maharashtra villager angli sampatrao Pawar:

  • Union Ministry of Water Resources declared an award for a villager of Sangli Sampatrao Pawar for his contribution to revitalization of Agrani River. Agrani is a tributary of Krishna river originating from Tamkhadi village in Khanapur tehsil of Sangli district, Maharashtra. In all, 107 villages in five tehsils of Sangli district fall under this river basin.

A book titled “Jugalbandi: The BJP Before Modi” authoured by Political Scientist Vinay Sitapati:

  • A new book titled “Jugalbandi: The BJP Before Modi” will explain Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP’s dominance in Indian politics through the 100-year old story of RSS, Jana Sangh. The book will be published by Penguin’s Viking is set to release in November 2020.

A Book Titled “The Age of Pandemic (1817-1920): How they Shaped India and the World” Authored by Chinmay Tumbe:

  • Chinmay Tumbe’s 2nd book titled “The Age of Pandemic (1817-1920): How they Shaped India and the World” the book argues that the period between 1817 and 1920 as the age of Pandemic which claimed around 70 million lives, with India as the epicentre.
  • The book is published by HarperCollins India and is set to release in December 2020.

  • Former International hockey umpire Susanta Kumar Dey, who had represented Bengal National team from South Eastern Railway had passed away. He coached Bengal National Team, East Bengal Club.

Legendary Australia swimming coach Don Talbot passes away aged 87:

  • Don Talbot, Australia’s legendry swimming coaches and former head coach of Olympic Swimming team of Australia and Canada passed away in Queensland, Australia.
