President Ram Nath Kovind 3-day visit to Tajikistan

President Ram Nath Kovind has reached Tajikistan on a three-day visit to Central Asian Country.

The President was received by Deputy Prime Minister of Tajikistan Zokirzoda Mahmad Toir. All areas of bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation are expected to be discussed during President’s visit to Tajikistan.

During his visit from October 7-9, he will meet his Tajik counterpart Emamoli Rahmon, Speaker of Parliament Shukurjon Zuhurov, and Speaker of the Lower House (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of Parliament.

He will also pay his respects to Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore at their memorials in Dushanbe.

India’s 1st ‘Methanol Cooking Fuel Program’ Launched in Assam

The Namrup-based Assam Petrochemicals Limited has rolled out the country’s first methanol-based cooking fuel which will be cheaper than conventional LPG fuel.

NITI Aayog member and former director general of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Vijay Kumar Saraswat inaugurated the “Green and Clean Fuel Pilot Project” on methanol cooking stove, which is the first of its kind in India.

The concept of methanol economy is being actively pursued by China, Italy, Sweden, Israel, US, Australia, Japan and many other European nations.


India-Japan bilateral maritime exercise ‘JIMEX 18’ begins at Visakhapatnam

JIMEX-18, a bilateral maritime exercise between India and Japan, began in Visakhapatnam.

Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) ships Kaga, an Izumo-class helicopter destroyer, and Inazuma, a guided missile destroyer, arrived Visakhapatnam to mark the commencement of JIMEX.

The participating ships from India are INS Satpura, a multi-purpose stealth frigate, INS Kadmatt, an anti-submarine warfare corvette, missile corvette and INS Shakti, the fleet tanker.

The Indian ships would be commanded by Rear Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Fleet.


India’s and Asia’s first Dolphin Research Centre in Patna

The National Dolphin Research Centre (NDRC), India’s and Asia’s first is set to be established in Patna.

It will play an important role in strengthening conservation efforts and research to save the endangered mammal. Sinha is the chairperson of the working group for dolphin conservation set up by the central government.

Presently the dolphin population in India is estimated to be merely 2000 with a major chunk present at the Vikramshila Dolphin sanctuary in Bhagalpur district of Bihar.


ISRO, ROSCOSMOS to work together for first Indian manned mission

An MoU was inked between ISRO and the Federal Space Agency of Russia ‘ROSCOSMOS’ for joint activities in the field of Human Spaceflight Programme.

The Roscosmos State Corporation for Space Activities and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will be working together on the Gaganyaan mission.

Indian Space research Organisation (ISRO) aims to complete Gaganyaan mission before 2022.

Reliance Health Insurance Gets Final Approval From IRDAI

Reliance Health Insurance, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Reliance Capital has received R3 approval from IRDAI for its new health insurance business.

The new company will commence operations by the December quarter of 2018.

Health insurance in India has been amongst the fastest growing insurance sectors, growing at 20 per cent annually, and is expected to double to over Rs 1 lakh crore by 2021.

Reliance Capital has designated Ravi Viswanath, who has over two decades of global experience in health insurance, as CEO of the new health insurance company.


RBI approved formation of ‘Kerala Bank’ having Rs 650 bn in deposits

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) gave its nod to start that Kerala Bank, a venture proposed by the Kerala government.

It will be Kerala Cooperative Bank, but will be referred to as Kerala Bank. It will have all the facilities of a commercial bank, including ATMs.

The aim of the new bank was to provide modern facilities to the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS).

Earlier, the state government had formed a special task force of experts for the formation of the Kerala Bank. The expert committee was headed by Chairman M S Sriram.

Brett Kavanaugh Sworn In As US Supreme Court Justice

Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in as America’s 114th Supreme Court justice.

Chief Justice John Roberts administered the constitutional oath, and retired Justice Anthony Kennedy administered the judicial oath.

Kavanaugh replaces Justice Kennedy, who was nominated to the Court by President Reagan in 1987.

WFE Appoints Vikram Limaye As Chairman of Working Committee

The World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) has appointed NSE’s Managing Director and CEO Vikram Limaye as the chairman of its working group committee.

WFE, which is the global industry association for exchanges and clearing houses, also admitted six new members taking the total number of full members to 70.

The new members are — Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), London Stock Exchange Group, Boursa Kuwait, Tunis Stock Exchange, China Securities Depository and Clearing Corporation and Nairobi Securities Exchange.

His name was announced at the 58th General Assembly and Annual Meeting in Athens, Greece.

New Ambassador Appointed to Spain and  Republic of Croatia

The Senior diplomat Sanjay Verma has been appointed as India’s Ambassador to Spain. Verma, a 1990 batch Indian Foreign Service officer, is presently Additional Secretary in the ministry.

Also, Arindam Bagchi, a 1995 batch IFS official,has been appointed as the next Indian Ambassador to the Republic of Croatia.

Government appoints former Canara Bank MD Rakesh Sharma as IDBI MD

The government appointed former Canara Bank managing director Rakesh Sharma as head of IDBI Bank.

Sharma has been appointed as managing director for a period of six months.

Prior to his appointment in Canara Bank, Sharma was heading Lakshmi Vilas Bank. He completed his three-year term in Canara Bank in July 2018.

Richie Benaud named Sport Australia Hall of Fame Legend

Richie Benaud will be posthumously honoured as ‘Legend’ by Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

He will be the 40th Legend of Australian Sport and the third cricketer to be bestowed the prestigious annual honour.

It will be made official at the 34th Sport Australia Hall of Fame induction and awards gala dinner in Melbourne

Don Bradman (1993) and Keith Miller (2004) are the other cricketers who had been inducted as ‘Legends’.

Youth Olympics 2018: Shahu clinches silver in air rifle

Shahu Tushar Mane opened the medals tally for India with a silver in air rifle in the Youth Olympics in Bueno Aires, Argentina.

Shahu Tushar was defeated by Grigorii Shamakov of Russia.

It was the first big medal for the 16-year-old Shahu who had finished sixth in the junior World Cup in Sydney earlier this season.

He had won the youth bronze in the Asian championship in 2017.


Lewis won Japanese Grand Prix 2018

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton won Japanese Grand Prix 2018. Hamilton claimed his fourth consecutive victory.

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas took the second position and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took third.


Former England Batsman Nick Compton Retires

Former England batsman Nick Compton announced his retirement from cricket. South Africa-born Compton played 16 Tests for England, scoring two hundred.

Compton, who scored more than 12,000 first-class runs at an average of 40.42, including 27 hundred, was the first of 12 batsmen who partnered Alastair Cook at the top of England’s order in the six years.

‘Nagaland’s Gandhi’ Natwar Thakkar passed away

The Eminent Gandhian Natwar Thakkar, popularly known as Nagaland’s Gandhi has passed away.

Thakkar, a Padma Shri awardee, had founded the Nagaland Gandhi Ashram at Chuchuyimlang. His efforts to spread Gandhian philosophy and peace had earned him the sobriquet ‘Nagaland’s Gandhi’.

National Air Force Day – October 8

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is celebrating its 86th anniversary as October 8 commemorates the official foundation day of the force.

A grand parade-cum-investiture ceremony is being held at Air Force station Hindan, Ghaziabad.

The parade will be followed by an air display and acrobatics by the Air Force’s various aircraft, including Jaguar, Bison, MiG-29, Mirage-2000 and SU-30 MKI fighter jets and Rudra helicopters.
