NATIONAL

India & Bulgaria Sign 4 MoUs

India and Bulgaria has signed MoUs, including one on civil nuclear cooperation, as President Ram Nath Kovind held talks with his Bulgarian counterpart Rumen Radev.

The four MoUs between India and Bulgaria are investment, tourism, civil nuclear cooperation and the establishment of Hindi Chair at Sofia University.

A programme of cooperation was also signed to enhance scientific cooperation. The president also invited the Balkan nation to become a key partner of India in the defence sector.


Conference on E-Mobility in Indian Railways held in New Delhi

A Conference on “E-Mobility in Indian Railways”was organized by Ministry of Railways through Institution of Railways Electrical Engineers  in association with NITI Aayog concluded in Delhi.

The main aim is to discuss strategies for future of mobility in India and to make Indian Railways more efficient, greener and a preferred mode of transport. It acted as a common platform for project developers and other stakeholders.

Around 300 numbers of delegates from Ministry of Railways, Central Ministries, various Public Sector Undertakings, and industry partners have attended the conference.


Adobe and Skill Development Ministry launch digital literacy programme

The Software major Adobe has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship to launch an “Adobe Digital Disha” programme across vocational institutes in India.

The programme is focused on helping vocational institutes leverage the power of a free online and mobile graphic design app “Adobe Spark” to integrate creativity and digital literacy into classrooms and curriculum.

“Adobe Spark” — a storytelling Creative Cloud application that runs in any web or mobile browser — is now available free of charge for education and skill development.

This will enable students quickly express themselves via graphics, web stories and video to creatively approach their assignments as well as develop digital portfolios.


BANKING AND ECONOMY

S&P BSE Private Banks Index launched by Asia Index Pvt. Ltd

Asia Index Pvt Ltd, a joint venture between S&P Dow Jones Indices and BSE Ltd, has announced the launch of an index designed to measure the performance of private banks.

The S&P BSE Private Banks Index is drawn from the constituents of the S&P BSE Finance Index.

Only common stocks classified as Banks by the BSE Sector Classification model and that are not classified under the BSE scrip category as a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) are eligible.

The S&P BSE Private Banks Index is designed to provide market participants with a transparent and rules-based benchmark that measures the performance of private banks listed in India. The index is calculated in Indian Rupees and US Dollar and is calculated real-time by BSE.


India-US Hold Maiden 2+2 Talks In New Delhi

The US Secretary of State, Michael R Pompeo, and US Defence Secretary, James N Mattis, met their Indian counterparts Swaraj and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the first ‘2+2’ dialogue in New Delhi.

India and the US resolved to strengthen trade ties by addressing issues of both sides, deepening defence cooperation through various pacts, including the Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement, and pro-actively address thorny issues such as import of oil from Iran, at the first ‘Indo-US 2+2 dialogue’.

According to the joint statement, the two sides signed the Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA) that will facilitate access to advanced defence systems and enable India to optimally utilise its existing US-origin platforms.


Supreme Court Abolishes Section 377

The Supreme Court decriminalised a portion of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, a colonial era provision that criminalises private consensual sexual acts between same sex adults.

The judgment was delivered by a Bench of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices Rohinton Nariman, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra.

The decriminalised Section 377 refer, whoever voluntarily has “carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal”, shall be punished by up to 10 years in jail under the 1861 law.


India to buy 18 bullet trains from Japan for Rs 7,000 crore

India will purchase 18 bullet train sets from Japan at a total cost of about Rs 7,000 crore in a deal that includes a pledge to transfer technology for local production.

The country’s first bullet train is likely to start running between Mumbai and Ahmedabad by the end of 2022. The 508-km, high speed train corridor is being built with Japanese assistance.

The bullet train corridor will have sound baffles along the route that will have 12 stations, with about 350 km of it in Gujarat and 150 km in Maharashtra.

The government has already started getting funds from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency, which is providing a soft loan of Rs 88,000 crore for the project over 50 years at an annual interest rate of 0.1%. Repayments will start after a moratorium of 15 years from the date the loan was released.


Jan Dhan Yojana: Govt doubles up overdraft facility from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000

TNPSC CURRENT AFFAIRS IN TAMIL – SEPTEMBER 6, 2018The government decided to make the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) an open-ended scheme and added more incentives to encourage people to open bank accounts.

The PMJDY was launched in August 2014 for a period of four years as a national mission for financial inclusion to ensure access of financial services like bank accounts, insurance and pensions to the masses.

To make the scheme more attractive, the government has decided to double the overdraft facility from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000.

Under the scheme, age entitlement has been relaxed to 18-65 years, and accident insurance of accounts after 28 August will have a limit of Rs 2 lakh.

Indian boxer Mary Kom signed as brand ambassador by BSNL

The State-run telecom firm BSNL has roped in Indian boxer MC Mary Kom as its brand ambassador for two years.

Mary Kom will endorse and be have interaction in promotional actions of BSNLfor its numerous providers.

BSNL will run television commercials, print advertisements and tariff plan endorsement with Kom.

WHO: Pooman Khetrapal Singh re-nominated for second term as Regional Director of South-East Asian region

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh has been nominated for a second five-year term as regional director of its South-East Asian Region.

The WHO Executive Board, which next meets in Geneva in January 2019, is expected to confirm Singh’s nomination and appoint her as the Regional Director.

She will commence her next five-year term on February 1, 2019.

She served in the health sector in various senior positions during her stint in the Indian Administrative Services and in the World Bank.

Kolkata tops in India on 4G front

According to latest data collated by UK mobile analytics company and speeds tester, OpenSigna Kolkata has the highest 4G services availability across India’s 22 telecom circles.

The OpenSignal has ranked Kolkata No 1 on 4G availability in India with a score of 90.7%, well over Mumbai (86.65%) and Delhi (86.73%).

In Global 4G availability trends, Singapore tops and it is followed by Hong Kong and Taipei.

The Former Indian pacer RP Singh has announced his retirement from the game.

His international career spanned six years and the pacer played 82 matches across all three formats and picked up over 100 wickets.
