ECONOMY

1. India’s export of Agricultural and allied commodities increases 18.49 per cent during 2020-21

• India has witnessed an increase of almost 5 per cent in export of Agricultural and allied products during 2020-21 as compared to the previous year.
• India had witnessed 727 per cent growth in Wheat export and 132 per cent in Non-Basmati Rice export.
• The value of export of Agricultural and allied commodities during 2020-21 was over Rs 2 lakh 70 thousand crores.
• The imports witnessed a slight increase of 93 per cent during this period. Despite COVID-19, the balance of trade in agriculture has favorably increased.

2. Newly found super-Earth GJ 740 b has second shortest orbit around the red dwarf star

• An exoplanet GJ 740 b has been discovered 36 light-years from Earth. It is three times the mass of Earth and orbits a red dwarf star called GJ 740.
• Each orbit takes just 4 days, making it the second shortest orbit of any planet around a red dwarf star discovered so far. Compared to our Sun, GJ 740 is tiny and far cooler.

3. Indian Navy dispatches Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel from Vishakapatnam to support, search and rescue of missing Indonesian Submarine KRI Nanggala

• Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has directed the Indian Navy to move its Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel DSRV from Vishakapatnam to Indonesia to support search and rescue of missing Indonesian Submarine KRI Nanggala.

• The German-built submarine KRI Nanggala was in service with the Indonesian Navy since 1981.

Indian Navy’s DSRV system

• India is amongst the few countries in the world capable of undertaking the search and rescue of a disabled submarine through a DSRV. Indian Navy’s DSRV system can locate a submarine up to 1,000 m depth utilising its state-of-the-art technology. It can also be used to provide emergency supplies to the submarine.

7. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham ranks amongst the top 100 in THE Impact Ranking 2021

• The Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is the only Indian university to secure a rank amongst the top 100 in the third edition of Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking. The varsity bagged the 81st position in the university rank list, which consists of 1240 universities from 98 countries and regions.
• Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has also scored the fifth rank for ‘quality education’ and eighth for ‘gender equality’ globally. In ‘good health and well-being’ Vidyapeetham stands at 37th position and for ‘clean water and sanitation’ at 52nd.

• Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking is evaluated on the universities’ performances of the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

8. Care Ratings lowers FY22 GDP forecast to 10.2%

• Care Ratings has lowered its India GDP growth forecast to 2% for FY22 following fresh lockdowns imposed in parts of the country to control the pandemic.
• As tax collections too would be affected, there would be an impact on GDP growth which is now placed at 10.2%. Therefore, the loss in GDP this year due to the lockdowns would be to the extent of 0.8-1% from our earlier estimate of 11-11.2%.

9. World Book and Copyright Day – 23 April

• World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated by UNESCO on 23 April every year since 1995. April 23 is a symbolic date for world literature because on this date in 1616 Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died. Hence, the day was selected to pay tribute to the great literary figures.
• Each year, UNESCO selects the World Book Capital for a one-year period. As per UNESCO, the city of Tbilisi in Georgia was chosen as the World Book Capital for 2021.
