Odisha cabinet approved setting up of Handlooms and Handicrafts Development and Promotion Council:
The Odisha government decided to establish the Handloom and Handicrafts Development and Promotion Council in the state and restructuring of the cadre of the Odisha Administrative Service (OAS).
The council will also undertake promotional activities such as exhibition, fairs, conferences and other programmes to facilitate sale of handloom and handicraft items on a large scale and improve the market linkage with special focus on exports.

New interceptor boat launched:
Giving a boost to coastal security, a new interceptor boat (V-409) built by Bharathi Defence and Infrastructure Limited (BDIL) was launched at a function held at the Coast Guard yard.
The 28-metre long, V-409 interceptor boat has aluminium hull and fitted with new generation of Arneson Surface Drive (ASD) which is propelled by two powerful diesel engines of 1650 KW each.
India third in nuclear power installations:
India is third in the world in the number of nuclear reactors being installed, at six, while China is leading at 20, the World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2017.

The Minister of Communication Shri Manoj Sinha announced DoT’s first ever Mobile, Internet and Technology event in India – India Mobile Congress 2017 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
BDL signs contract for supply of medium range surface to air missiles to Indian Army:
Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has signed contract with Research Centre Imarat (RCI) for supply of Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MRSAM) to Indian Army.
The contract was signed to facilitate production, deliveries and product support of MRSAM system for the Indian Army. Directors and senior officials from BDL and senior scientists from DRDO were present on the occasion.
Union Home Minister to inaugurate the NDMA’s 13th Formation Day:
The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the 13th Formation Day of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The theme of this year’s Formation Day is School Safety.

Australia’s Deakin University inks pact with NSDC:
Deakin University, Australia said it has inked a memorandum of understanding with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) for conducting data analytics and impact evaluation studies in the skills ecosystem.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) is for duration of five years.
These projects would help bridge the skill gap and enhance quality training institutions across the country.

Maharashtra Government Signs MoU with South Korea:
The Maharashtra government’s ambitious Rs 46,000-crore Nagpur-Mumbai Super-communication Expressway (also called Samruddhi Corridor) got a positive response from South Korea, which has agreed to enter into business partnership with the state to push mega-infrastructure projects. CM Devendra Fadnavis held a meeting with representatives of the South Korean government to discuss the investments and joint partnership for big infrastructure projects. The meeting was held at Seoul.

SBI opens new branch in Singapore:
State Bank of India (SBI) opened its sixth branch in Singapore, extending its services in the country’s heartland.
SBI offers the highest interest rates on deposits among other banks here, handles wealth management, insurance and rupee remittances among a wide range of services, he said.

India is world’s 40th most competitive economy: WEF
India has been ranked as the 40th most competitive economy — slipping one place from last year’s ranking — on the World Economic Forum’s global competitiveness index.

In the latest Global Competitiveness Report released, India has slipped from the 39th position to 40th while neighbouring China is ranked at 27th.
India ranked infrastructure (66th rank), higher education and training (75) and technological readiness (107), reflecting recent public investments in these areas, it added.

Google honours Indian chemist Asima Chatterjee on 100th birthday:
Google Doodle, celebrates 100th birthday of Asima Chatterjee, a renowned Indian chemist, who was the first female Doctorate of Science in India from an Indian University.
Born on September 23, 1917, Dr Asima Chatterjee has various contributions on the research of vinca alkaloids and the development of anti-epileptic and anti-malarial drugs.
