First ever Swadesh Darshan Project in Nagaland worth Rs. 97.36 crore inaugurated by CM Neiphiu Rio:

“Development of Tribal Circuit: Peren-Kohima-Wokha Project” will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Shri Neiphiu Rio, in the presence of Union Minister of State (I/C) for Tourism, Shri K.J. Alphons and Advisor for Tourism, Art & Culture, Government of Nagaland, Shri H. Khehovi Yepthomi at Kisama Heritage Village in Nagaland. This is the first project to be implemented in the state under Swadesh Darshan Scheme of Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.

The project was sanctioned by the Ministry of Tourism in November 2015 for Rs. 97.36 Crores.

Delhi government launches free pilgrimage scheme for senior citizens:

The Delhi government has launched the ‘Mukhyamantri Tirth Yatra Yojana’ which offers free travel packages on five religious circuits for senior citizens from the national capital. The scheme, approved by the Cabinet in July, was launched by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at the Delhi Secretariat.

Union Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Minister Shri Radha Mohan Singh Minister laid the foundation stone of Pusa Kisan Haat in ICAR’s Agricultural Technology Information Centre (ATIC) in New Delhi.

Pusa Kisan Haat will be built across 2.5 acres in which 60 stalls measuring 3m x 3m will be erected in which farmers can sell their agricultural produce and value-added products. Pusa Kisan Haat will also have ‘Technology Park’ in which farmers can see Live crop technologies of Pusa.
4-day 1st International conference on bears held in Agra, UP:

International Conference on Bears being organised in the Taj city, Agra in Uttar Pradesh for the first time. The conference aims to share knowledge on principles of welfare of bears and other wild animals in zoos, sanctuaries and rescue centres.

Hosted by Wildlife SOS, a conservation non-profit, the conference is focused on bear care, wildlife conservation and human wildlife conflict mitigation and is in collaboration with Bear Care Group from the US and Canada.

FAO Council approves India’s proposal to observe International Year of Millets in 2023:

Food and Agriculture organisation, FAO Council has approved India’s proposal to observe an International Year of Millets in 2023.

Millets consists of Jowar, Bajra, Ragi and minor millets together termed as nutri-cereals. In addition, the FAO Council has also approved India’s membership to the Executive Board of the United Nations World Food Program for 2020 and 2021.

The Indian Coast Guard has conducted the Regional Level Marine Oil Pollution Response Exercise titled ‘Clean Sea – 2018’ at sea off Port Blair.

Coast Guard ships Viswasth, Vijith, Rajveer, Rajshri, 4 interceptor boats and its air assets Dornier and Chetak helicopters participated in the exercise.
Panama 1st Latin American nation to join Belt and Road Initiative:

Xi and Varela signed a score of infrastructure, tourism and development cooperation agreements as Panama became the first Latin American country to partner with Beijing’s giant multi-billion-dollar global investment initiative known as “Belt and Road Initiative”. China established diplomatic relations with Panama last year.

India Sweeps Top Ten in List of World’s Fastest-Growing Cities:

India is set to dominate over the next two decades, according to Oxford Economics. Surat, a diamond processing and trading centre in the western state of Gujarat, will see the fastest expansion through 2035, averaging more than 9 percent, Richard Holt, Oxford’s head of global cities research, wrote in a report.

India 4th highest emitter of CO2: Study

India is the fourth highest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world, accounting for 7 per cent of global emissions in 2017.

The top four emitters in 2017, which covered 58 per cent of global emissions, were China (27 per cent), the US (15 per cent), the European Union (10 per cent) and India (7 per cent), according to the projection by the Global Carbon Project. The rest of the world contributed 41 per cent last year.
ADB enters an arrangement with World Bank for co-financed projects:

Asian Development Bank (ADB) said it has entered into an arrangement with the World Bank to put in place a single framework that will make co-financed projects more efficient.

ADB’s first Alternative Procurement Arrangement (APA) with the World Bank will allow procedures on co-financed projects to follow a single procurement framework. The APA is a step further towards reducing procurement timelines in line with Strategy 2030.

Prominent Indian-origin lawyer Shamila Batohi has been appointed to head South Africa’s prosecuting authority, the first woman to head the agency facing criticism for its handling of the investigations against former president Jacob Zuma over corruption charges.

Batohi will start her new role as the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) in February 2019.

An assistant professor from the Indian Institute of Technology-Mandi (IIT-Mandi), Rajanish Giri has been awarded the Innovative Young Biotechnologist Award (IYBA) 2018. Giri is selected for his proposed innovative idea on Zika virus Capsid Folding and inhibitor discovery.
Rattan Lal honoured with Glinka World Soil Prize 2018:

Rattan Lal, a distinguished university professor of soil science at the Ohio State University, has won the Glinka World Soil Prize 2018 in a ceremony at the Rome headquarters of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for his outstanding contribution to sustainable soil management.
Ministry of New and Renewable Energy conferred Skoch Award for National Significance:

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India has been conferred the Skoch Award for National Significance at an event held recently in New Delhi. The award was received by Secretary, Ministry of New Renewable Energy Shri Anand Kumar.

The award has been conferred on the Ministry considering its purpose and critical role played in installing about 73 GW renewable energy capacity in the country.

Budapest to host 2023 IAAF World Championships:

Budapest will host the 2023 IAAF athletics world championships. The Hungarian capital is the first host city to be named under a new bidding process announced in February last year by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Budapest has twice hosted the IAAF world indoor championships and the European athletics championships.

The 2019 world championships will be held in Doha, Qatar, and the 2021 edition in Eugene, Oregon.
Yasir Shah becomes fastest bowler to take 200 Test wickets after Breaking 82-year-old Record:
- Yasir Shah became the fastest bowler in terms of number of Tests played to pick 200 Test wickets in the game’s history on Day 4 of the third and final Test against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi. He achieved the feat in his third over of the day when he trapped William Somerville leg before wicket.

Yasir reached the landmark in just 33 Tests breaking an 82-year-old record held by another leggie, Clarrie Grimmett from Australia, who had bagged 200 Test wickets in 36 Tests.

Former National Champion Swimmer Arun Kumar Shaw passes away:

Seven-time national champion swimmer Arun Kumar Shaw died in Kolkata following prolonged illness. Shaw won national championships in 1959, 1962, 1964, 1965-67 and set national records many times.
