Govt extends date for filing GST returns, tax payment by 5 more days:

The last date for filing returns and payment of taxes under the GST regime has been extended by five days. The cut-off for filing maiden GST returns for July was scheduled to end. The returns can now be filed till the 25th of this august month.

In a statement, the Finance Ministry said that certain flood-hit states as well as Jammu and Kashmir had sought an extension. There were also reports of GSTN portal facing technical issues because of a huge rush. For taxpayers who have to claim credit for past taxes paid by filing form TRANS 1, the last date for returns will be August 28th.

 


India’s First World Peace University Inaugurated in MIT, Pune:

          MIT World Peace University, the first of its kind in India, was inaugurated by Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis.

Following the celebrations, a two-day ‘Global Summit Science and Spirituality for World Peace’ was organized on the next day discussing issues of national and international importance and how a different outlook towards education could solve many of them.

Govt approves Rs 32,000 cr for Coast Guard:

      The Centre has approved a nearly Rs 32,000 crore plan for the Coast Guard that will give more teeth to the maritime security agency in maintaining vigil on coastal waters, defence sources said.

The action plan to give a boost to the Coast Guard in terms of infrastructure and equipment like offshore patrol vessels, interceptor boats, helicopters, aircraft and critical operational infrastructure were cleared at a meeting chaired by Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra.

United States experts welcome two-by-two ministerial dialogue:

The decision by India and the US to establish a new two-by-two ministerial dialogue has been welcomed by top American experts who believe that it would enhance strategic coordination between the two nations. US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to enhance peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region by establishing a new two-by-two ministerial dialogue.

The new format would include External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Arun Jaitley and their American counterparts Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defence Secretary James Mattis.

China launches first cyber court in e-commerce hub:

China launched its first cyber court specialising in handling internet-related cases in the e-commerce hub of Hangzhou amid a spike in the number of online disputes.

The Hangzhou Internet Court in Hangzhou, capital of east China’s Zhejiang Province will handle cases such as online trade disputes and copyright lawsuits.

BSNL launches digital wallet powered by MobiKwik:

State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) unveiled its mobile wallet in partnership with MobiKwik to enable one-tap bill payment for its over 100 million subscribers. Besides, the subscribers will also be able to use the digital wallet at over 1.5 million merchants across India.

The digital wallet, developed by MobiKwik for BSNL, is in line with the telecom corporation’s intent to take the reach of digital payments to semi-urban and rural India.

Telecom regulators of 23 Asia-Pacific countries to meet in Delhi:

          Telecom regulators of 23 countries from the Asia-Pacific will meet in Delhi this month to discuss challenges in framing rules for digital ecosystem and regional roaming, among others. Regulatory heads of Australia, Afghanistan, Iran, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vanuatu, Fiji and some others are slated to attend the international meet.

Union Bank signs insurance deals:

          Union Bank of India entered into a corporate agency agreement with Bajaj Allianz General Insurance and Cholamandalam MS General Insurance for distribution of their insurance products. The public sector bank already has a corporate agency agreement with The New India Assurance.

First regional centre of NDB opens in South Africa:

The first regional centre of the New Development Bank, set up by India and other BRICS nations, was officially opened by South African President Jacob Zuma and the banks Indian head K V Kamath.

The idea for setting up NDB was proposed by India at the 4th BRICS summit in 2012 held in New Delhi. The creation of a NDB was the main theme of the meeting.

The New Development Bank (NDB), formerly referred to as the BRICS Development Bank, is a multilateral development bank established by the BRICS states (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) with an initial authorised capital of the bank is USD 100 billion.

Power Grid inks $500 million loan pact with Asian Development Bank:

      State-run power transmission utility Power Grid Corp said it will get a loan of $500 million from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for its various projects.

According to the statement, the proceeds of the loan are proposed to be utilised for funding of Green Energy Corridor (Part D); 800KV High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) bipole link between Western Region (Raigarh, Chhattisgarh) and Southern Region (Pugalur, Tamil Nadu) and 320 KV HDVC link between Pugalur and North Trichur (Kerala).

      Dr. (Ms.) Mamta Suri took charge as Executive Director, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) in New Delhi.

Before joining IBBI, Dr. Suri was serving as Chief General Manager, Insurance Regulatory Development Authority of India. She has also received honorary membership for High Scholastic Achievement from USA.

Dr Nanda Kumar Jairam bags FICCI’s Healthcare Personality award:

Dr Nanda Kumar Jairam, CEO, Chairman and Group Medical Director, Columbia Asia Hospitals, India, has been awarded the ‘Healthcare Personality of the Year’ award.

Dr Jairam was given the award at the ninth Healthcare Excellence Awards instituted by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). The programme is supported by the Quality Council of India.

Rinku Hooda bags silver at World U-20 Para Athletics Championships:

Rinku Hooda remembers the Sport Arena in Nottwil, Switzerland as the first international stadium. Competing in his first overseas meet in 2015, Hooda, won a silver medal in the F46 javelin throw event and subsequently became the youngest Indian para-athlete to compete at the Rio Paralympics.

 


Virat Kohli retains top ICC ODI rankings for batsmen:

      India captain Virat Kohli continued to be the world’s top-ranked one-day batsman in the latest ICC ODI rankings. And in the Second placed is Australian David Warner.

Other Indian batsmen in the top-15 are former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (12th), Shikhar Dhawan (13th) and Vice-captain Rohit Sharma (14th).However, no Indian bowler figure in the top-10 list. Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar (13th) is the lone Indian in top 15.

Nation remembering Rajiv Gandhi on his 73rd birth anniversary: Sadbhavana Diwas

The nation is remembering former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 73rd birth anniversary. Former President of India Pranab Mukherjee, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra paid tribute to Rajiv Gandhi at his Samadhi, Vir Bhumi in the national capital.


 

Rajiv Gandhi assassination:

Mr Rajiv Gandhi was born on 20th August 1944. He served as the Prime Minister from 31st October 1984 to 2nd December 1989. He was assassinated on 21st May, 1991 at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu during a poll campaign.

 


20th August: World Mosquito Day

World Mosquito Day was first established in 1897, when the link between mosquitos and malaria transmission was discovered by Sir Ronald Ross. It is celebrated on 20th August every year.

It aims to raise awareness about the causes of malaria and how it can be prevented, as well as fundraising for research into the cure of malaria. Theme of 2017:”Protect Yourself from Mosquito Bites”.
