NATIONAL

  • The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C42 (PSLV) has beeen successfully injected two foreign satellites – NovaSAR and S1-4- into the orbit.

  • India climbed one spot to 130 among 189 countries in the latest human development index released by the United Nations Development Programme.

  • India ranks third globally in terms of number of family owned businesses with 111 companies of USD 839 billion total market capitalisation, followed closely after China with 159 firms and the United States with 121 firms.

  • In an attempt to combat human trafficking, the West Bengal government has rolled out a scheme, Swayangsiddha, in different districts of the State. Swayangsiddha, which means self-reliance, will be executed by the West Bengal Police.

  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) has approved Rs 65,634.93 crore loan projects under the government’s flagship scheme Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY).

  • India gets the first ever dedicated dog park in Hyderabad, Telangana. The park has been developed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) at a cost of Rs 1.1 crore.

  • The Delhi government on September 14, 2018 signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Seoul Metropolitan Government to work closely in the fields of environment, tourism, waste water and solid waste management, infrastructure and public health.

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Sunday successfully tested a low-weight indigenously developed man-portable anti-tank guided missile (MPATGM) at its Ahmednagar range.

  • The online ‘e-Sahaj’ portal was launched to facilitate individuals and private companies in seeking security clearance for setting up businesses in certain sensitive sectors.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart, Sheikh Hasina, unveiled e-plaques for the ceremony of the two projects, oil pipeline and a key railway project.

  • India and Malta has signed three Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) relating to tourism, maritime cooperation and exchanges between the Foreign Service Institute of India and the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies, University of Malta.

  • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has accorded approval for the procurement of equipment for the Defence Forces valued at over Rs 9,100 crore.

  • The Union home minister Rajnath Singh has launched two smart fencing pilot projects along the 198-km-long India-Pakistan international border in Jammu and Kashmir.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched various development projects worth over Rs 500 crore in his Lok Sabha constituency, Varanasi.

  • The Culture Ministry has revived the National Museum Research Bulletin, a comprehensive anthology of the museum’s contents after a gap of 16 years

  • The national capital’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has bagged the title of Best Airport to handle over 40 million passengers per annum (MPPA) by the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards 2017.

  • India and Morocco signed the revised Air Services Agreement between the two countries enabling greater connectivity through a modernized agreement.

  • India and Romania have agreed to intensify cooperation at the United Nations and other multilateral fora in order to address global challenges. Romania will open a consulate in Chennai.

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has signed the ordinance banning the practice of instant triple talaq. The ordinance was cleared by the Union Cabinet.

  • The Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has approved a new scheme which would pay cash relief to insured persons during the period of unemployment.

  • The Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani is due in India for a day-long visit that comes ahead of next month’s parliamentary polls in Afghanistan.

  • The World Bank Board has endorsed an ambitious five-year Country Partnership Framework (CPF) for India, which aligns with New Delhi’s objectives of high, sustainable and inclusive growth.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of India International Convention and Expo Centre (IICC).

  • The Union Home Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh has launched two separate portals to strengthen Women Safety.

  • The portal “cybercrime.gov.in” will receive complaints from citizens on objectionable online content related to child pornography, child sexual abuse material, sexually explicit material such as rape and gang rape.

  • India’s leading stock exchanges Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange of India have received approval from capital market regulator SEBI to launch commodity derivatives segment.

  • The Board of Directors of Vodafone Idea Limited, India’s largest telecom operator approved merger of the Vodafone Idea Limited with the Aditya Birla Telecom Limited (ABTL), the parent company of Idea Cellular.

  • The Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has inaugurated ISRO’s first Space Technology Incubation Centre at the National Institute of Technology Agartala via remote from Bengaluru.

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully flight tested the indigenously developed surface-to-surface tactical missile ‘Prahar’, from Launch Complex-III, ITR, Balasore in Odisha.

  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare exchanged the MoUs with the Tata Trusts and Dell to provide a technological platform for nationwide prevention, control, screening and management program of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs).

  • India and Niger has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the implementation of Mahatma Gandhi International Convention Centre (MGICC) in Niamey, Niger with the Indian government’s grant assistance.

  • Odisha is all set to get its second operational airport. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in the state to launch some other projects and inaugurate the airport.

  • The Jharkhand government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Insurance Company Ltd to provide medical facilities to the people of the state under the Centre’s flagship health scheme – Ayushman Bharat Yojana.

  • Mousumi Khatua became the first woman from Kalyani City, West Bengal to climb Asia’s highest volcanic peak Mount Damavand.

  • The world’s largest free literary festival, Jaipur Literature Festival kicked off at the Asia Society of Texas with a performance by Indian Sufi singer Zila Khan.

  • The second edition of Nepal-China joint military exercise (JME) named Mt Everest Friendship Exercise-2018 (Sagarmatha Friendship-2018) began in China’s southwestern Sichuan province.

  • The 70th annual primetime Emmy honors handed out at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

  • NASA launched its Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite-2, known as ICESat-2. It will use an extremely precise laser to collect measurement data to track the Earth’s shrinking polar ice, on Saturday (September 15) from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

  • Germany has rolled out the world’s first hydrogen-powered train, signalling the start of a push to challenge the might of polluting diesel trains with costlier but more eco-friendly technology.

  • The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is organizing the 7th UNWTO Global Summit on Urban Tourism: A 2030 Vision for Urban Tourism in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

  • In Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been re-elected as the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party. The members’ vote gives him another 3 years as the head of the party and keeps Abe in his current role as the Prime Minister.

  • The exercise Aviaindra is an Air Force level exercise between India and the Russian Federation.

  • India has contributed a whopping $1 million for the installation of solar panels on the roof of the imposing UN building at the world body’s headquarters.

  • The 3rd edition of acclaimed International Business Conference  ‘MahaBiz 2018’ will be held in Dubai on 12th and 13th October 2018. MahaBiz is considered a bridge for business opportunities between Maharashtra state and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

  • India and Sri Lanka has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for construction of a 5000-metric ton temperature controlled warehouse in Dambulla of Central Province.

  • A Japanese billionaire and online fashion tycoon, Yusaku Maezawa, will be the first man to fly on a monster SpaceX rocket around the Moon as early as 2023, and he plans to bring six to eight artists along.


BANKING AND ECONOMY

  • The Centre on Monday proposed the amalgamation of state-owned Bank of Baroda, Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank to create India’s third largest bank as parts of reforms in the public sector banking segment.

  • Infosys, the country’s second largest IT services firm, acquired Finland-based Fluido in a deal worth up to 65 million euros (over Rs 545 crore).

  • Food-delivery firm UberEats has partnered with general insurance provider Tata AIG to offer comprehensive insurance covers for its delivery executives in India.

  • Time magazine is being sold by Meredith Corp. to Marc Benioff, a co-founder of Salesforce.Time magazine is sold for $190 million in cash to Mr. Benioff, one of four co-founders of Salesforce, a cloud computing pioneer.

  • Federal Bank, which is in the process of formation of a wholly owned subsidiary company, has executed MOU with Infopark Kakkanad for leasing space in their campus.

  • The newly-launched India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has tied up with Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance to sell the insurance products through IPPB network. IPPB customers will get access to all the insurance products and services offered by Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance.

  • The Small saving schemes such as Public Provident Fund (PPF), National Savings Certificates and Post Office Deposit Scheme will fetch more in the three months period starting October 1. The Government has raised interest rate on these schemes between 30 and 40 basis points (100 bps is 1 percent).

  • A Loan Agreement for IBRD Credit of US$74 million equivalent for the Uttrakhand Workforce Development Project (UKWDP) was signed with the World Bank.

  • The Corporation Bank has signed an information utility (IU) agreement with National e-Governance Services Ltd (NeSL), the first IU registered with the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI), to share financial and security information under IBBI (IU) Regulation 2017.

  • The US multinational Fitch Ratings raised India’s GDP growth forecast for the current fiscal to 7.8 percent, up from their earlier estimate of 7.4 percent.

  • IRDAI has constituted a committee, comprising its officials as well as senior executives of a few insurers, to study regulatory issues fin-tech poses for insurance.

  • The World champion Kevin Mayer set a new world record in the decathlon with 9,126 points at the Decastar meet. to eclipse Ashton’s Eaton previous mark of 9,045.

  • Rio Olympics Bronze medalist Sakshi Malik settled for a Silver medal at the Medved International Wrestling tournament at Minsk, Belarus last night.

  • The Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) has confirmed that Hangzhou in China will host the fourth edition of Asian Para Games in 2022. The confirmation came following a visit to Hangzhou in July by APC President Majid Rashed and CEO Tarek Souei.

  • Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli and weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu will receive the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award- India’s highest sports honour.

  • The 34th Priyadarshni Academy Anniversary Global Awards were held at Hotel Trident, Mumbai on Sept. 19.

  • In a 2018 ranking of countries on e-government development, Denmark, Australia, and Republic of Korea came out on top of a group of 40 countries, scoring very high on an index (the E-Government Development Index—EGDI), which measures countries’ use of information and communications technologies to deliver public services.
