World Hemophilia Day – 17 April

  • World Hemophilia Day is observed annually on 17 April globally to raise awareness about hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders.
  • In 1989, World Haemophilia Day was started by the World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH).
  • World Haemophilia Day was started in 1989 by the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) in honour of WFH founder Frank Schnabel’s birthday on 17 April 1989.
  • The theme for World Hemophilia Day is ‘Access for all: Partnership. Policy. Progress’.

World Heritage Day – 18 April

  • World Heritage Day also known as International Day for Monuments and Sites is observed on 18 April every year to spread awareness about preserving the history, diversity and vulnerability of important sites and monuments.
  • The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) proposed that 18 April be designated as the International Day for Monuments and Sites in 1982.
  • The theme for World Heritage Day is ‘Heritage and Climate’.

Regional Connectivity through Waterways ‘Waterways Conclave 2022’ is set to be held in Dibrugarh, Assam

  • The Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways along with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) was organised the ‘Waterways Conclave 2022’ in Dibrugarh, Assam.
  • Waterways Conclave aims for speedy development of Multimodal projects in the North-eastern region to energise the economic activities and augment employment generation.
  • Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) was the industry partner for the two-day conclave.

India’s first radio channel for visually impaired people named ‘Radio Aksh’ launched in Nagpur

  • India’s first-ever radio channel for visually impaired people, named ‘Radio Aksh’ was launched in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
  • The Blind Relief Association Nagpur and Samdrushti Kshamata Vikas Avam Anusandhan Mandal (Saksham) serve as the pioneers of the concept that will help the visually impaired gain seamless access to education resources and audiobooks.
  • This concept was created as a substitute for audiobooks provided by Saksham to the visually impaired on their digital devices, access to which was cut off due to the COVID-19 pandemic due to restrictions on travelling.

National Hydroelectric Power Corporation signs an MoU with Himachal Pradesh to develop green hydrogen technologies

  • National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the district administration of Chamba, Himachal Pradesh for the development of green hydrogen technologies to produce hydrogen.
  • Under this MoU, NHPC will develop a pilot green hydrogen production on a commercial scale to supply the Hydrogen needs for sectors like mobility, transportation, heating, microgrid.
  • Last year, NTPC’s renewable energy arm signed an MoU with the Union Territory of Ladakh to set up India’s first green hydrogen mobility project in the region. Initially, NTPC will ply five hydrogen buses and will set up a solar plant and green hydrogen generation unit in Leh.

Poverty in India declined by 12.3 percentage points between 2011–2019: World Bank

  • According to World Bank Policy Research Working Paper, Extreme poverty in India declined by 3 percentage points between 2011 to 2019.
  • The extreme poverty count fell from 5 % in 2011 to 10.2 % in 2019 and the decline in rural areas was much higher than in urban areas.
  • The paper titled ‘Poverty has Declined over the last decade But Not As Much As Previously Thought’ is jointly authored by economists Sutirtha Sinha Roy and Roy van der Weide.

India gets elected to four United Nations ECOSOC bodies in 2022

  • India was elected to the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council’s (ECOSOC) four major bodies.
  • The bodies include- Commission for Social Development, Committee on NGOs, Commission on Science and Technology for Development and Ambassador Preeti Saran gets re-elected to Committee for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
  • In 2018, she was first elected to the Asia Pacific seat on the UN’s Committee on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. On 1st January 2019, her first four-year term began.

PhonePe partners with Extreme IX to enable faster payments

  • PhonePe has partnered with an internet exchange point, Extreme IX to enable faster digital payments experience for 370 million PhonePe users.
  • This partnership will help PhonePe decrease latency for its users irrespective of their location or Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in India.
  • Extreme IX has 30 points of presence in 5 cities in India. More than 450 networks including Internet service providers and prominent content delivery networks such as Netflix, Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Akamai to name a few, are connected to the Extreme IX fabric.

  • Electrical goods major Havells India’s consumer durables brand, Lloyd, has roped in former Indian cricket captain and current BCCI President Sourav Ganguly as its brand ambassador for Eastern Indian markets.
  • He will endorse Lloyd’s range of consumer durables, through promotion, advertising and marketing as a part of the association.

  • HDFC Bank’s board of directors approved the re-appointment of Renu Karnad as its Non-Executive Director for five years with effect from 03 September 2022.

Karnataka appoints Robin Uthappa as its brand ambassador for Brain Health Initiative

  • The Health Department of Karnataka has appointed Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa as the brand ambassador for Karnataka Brain Health Initiative (KA-BHI).
  • The Karnataka Brain Health Initiative is being undertaken in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Health, NITI Aayog and Nimhans.
  • This is a first-of-a-kind initiative in India that will facilitate early diagnosis and timely treatment, for common neurological diseases.

Prabhat Patnaik was selected for Malcolm Adiseshiah Award 2022

  • Renowned Indian economist and political commentator Prabhat Patnaik was selected for the 2022 Malcom Adiseshiah Award.
  • This award is annually given by the Malcolm and Elizabeth Adiseshiah Trust to an outstanding social scientist selected from nominations received by a specially constituted national jury.
  • He has taught at the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning in the School of Social Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi and was the Vice Chairman of the Kerala State Planning Board.

Pakistan humanitarian activist Bilquis Edhi passed away at 74

  • Pakistan humanitarian activist Bilquis Edhi passed away at the age of 74. She is the founder of the Edhi Foundation, a social welfare organisation in Pakistan.
  • Bilquis Edhi is the wife of Pakistan’s renowned and revered humanitarian and philanthropist late Abdul Sattar Edhi.

Legendary Odia singer Prafulla Kar passes away at 83

  • Legendary Odia singer and music director Prafulla Kar passed away at the age of 83.
  • He received the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2015 and was honoured with the Jayadeva award in 2004. He had received the state film award eight times, six times in a row.

Sajan Prakash wins the gold medal in the Danish Open Swimming tournament in 2022

  • Indian swimmer Sajan Prakash won the gold medal in the 200 m Butterfly event at the Danish Open Swimming tournament 2022.
  • And also, Indian actor R. Madhavan’s son, Vedaant Madhavan won the silver medal in the 1500 m Freestyle swimming event at the Danish Open Swimming tournament 2022.

First Khelo India National Ranking Women Archery tournament to be held in Jamshedpur

  • The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has approved ₹ 75 lakh to host the first-ever Khelo India National Ranking Women Archery Tournament over six phases at Tata Archery Academy in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.
  • The tournament will be held across the Recurve and Compound events in the senior, Junior and Cadet Categories and will be conducted as per the World Archery Rules.
  • The Archery Association of India (AAI) in collaboration with the Jharkhand Archery Association and TATA Steel is organising the tournament.
