RBI Financial Literacy Week – 14 February to 18 February

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has declared 14 February to 18 February as ‘Financial Literacy Week’ in 2022.
  • The theme for Financial Literacy Week 2022 is ‘Go Digital, Go Secure’, which aligns with one of the objectives of the National Strategy for Financial Education 2020–2025.
  • The focus of this Financial Literacy Week will be on raising knowledge of digital transaction convenience, digital transaction security and client protection.
  • The RBI has been observing Financial Literacy Week since 2016.

Union Government banned 54 Chinese apps over security threat and privacy risks

  • The Indian Government banned over 54 new Chinese mobile applications citing concerns over privacy and national security.
  • The banned apps were allegedly involved in activities that jeopardised India’s sovereignty and integrity, as well as constituting a major threat to India’s security and defence.
  • The list of banned mobile apps includes Beauty Camera Sweet Selfie HD, Beauty Camera Selfie Camera, Rise of Kingdoms Lost Crusade, Viva Video Editor, Tencent Xriver, amongst others.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivers the inaugural address at TERI’s World Sustainable Development Summit

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually-delivered the inaugural address at the World Sustainable Development Summit of the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).
  • This summit is TERI’s annual flagship event and the theme of 2022 is ‘Towards a resilient planet: Ensuring a sustainable and equitable future’.
  • President of the Dominican Republic Luis Abinader, President of Guyana Dr. Irfaan Ali, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Amina J. Mohammed, heads of various intergovernmental organisations, ministers and envoys from more than a dozen countries and delegates from over 120 countries are set to attend this three-day summit.

Union Government launches the Scheme for Economic Empowerment for DNTs

  • The Union Government launched the Scheme for Economic Empowerment for DNTs (SEED) for the welfare of de-notified, nomadic and semi-nomadic communities in New Delhi.
  • The De-notified Tribes (DNTs) are the most underserved, marginalised and economically and socially deprived communities. These people have traditionally had little access to private land or homeownership, relying instead on woods and grazing pastures for their livelihood and housing.
  • This scheme includes free education, health insurance worth ₹ 5 lakhs under the Ayushman Bharat, improved livelihood opportunities and financial support for house construction, which will be game-changers in terms of empowering DNT communities.

 Union Ministry of Culture organises a two-day global summit in Hyderabad on ‘Reimagining Museums in India’

  • The Union Ministry of Culture organised a two-day global summit on ‘Reimagining Museums in India’ in Hyderabad from 15 February 2022 to 16 February 2022.
  • This virtual event will see participation from Australia, France, Italy, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.
  • This summit is being organised as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • The summit will focus on four broad themes relating to architecture, management, collections and education.
  • This summit serve as a forum for networking with nationally and internationally recognised museum professionals, sharing best practices in museology, promoting networks, stimulating strategic partnerships and developing a framework to guide institution expansion and rejuvenation

Kala Ramachandran was appointed as the first woman Police Commissioner of Gurugram

  • Kala Ramachandran, a senior IPS officer, currently serving as the ADGP of the Haryana State Vigilance Bureau, was named the first woman Commissioner of Police (CP) of Gurugram.
  • She will take over the charge from outgoing Police Commissioner
    K. Rao, who was transferred to the Centre for Police Training and Research at Bhondsi near Gurugram.

Vineet Joshi was appointed as the Chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education

  • Vineet Joshi, a senior IAS officer, was selected as the Chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) after replacing Manoj Ahuja.
  • In 1999, he joined the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports as a private secretary.
  • From 2000 to 2001, he worked as a private secretary at the Union Ministry of Food Processing Industries.

NITI Aayog and PhonePe launch the Fintech Open Hackathon

  • NITI Aayog, in association with PhonePe, is set to host the first-ever open-to-all hackathon event for ideating and coming up with the most creative solutions for the fintech space.
  • This hackathon will give innovators, digital producers and developers from throughout India the chance to think, ideate and code.
  • It aims to showcase path-breaking solutions for the fintech ecosystem.
  • The deadline to register for this event is 23 February 2022 and the deadline to submit final entries is 25 February 2022. The hackathon winners will be announced on 28 February 2022.

Sandeep Bakshi is the Business Standard Banker of the Year 2020–21

  • The Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ICICI Bank Sandeep Bakshi was named the Business Standard Banker of the Year 2020–21for his role in turning around the private sector lender and transforming public perception during his three-and-a-half-year term.
  • He has been with the ICICI Group since 1986 and handled assignments across the group in ICICI Ltd, ICICI Lombard General Insurance, ICICI Bank and ICICI Prudential Life Insurance.

Keegan Petersen of South Africa and Heather Knight of England were named the ICC Players of the Month for January 2022

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced Heather Knight of England and Keegan Petersen of South Africa as the ICC Players of the Month for January 2022.
  • Keegan Petersen played a pivotal role in South Africa’s 2-1 series win against India. He ended the series as the highest run- scorer for South Africa with 276 runs and was named the player of the series.

Indian music icon Bappi Lahiri passed away

  • Legendary music director and ‘Indian Cinema’s Disco King’Bappi Lahiri passed away at 69.
  • He made his debut in the film ‘Badhti Ka Naam Dadhi’ in 1974.
  • He is most known for his work in Bengali films such as Amar Prem, Mandira, Badnam and Aamar Tumi, but he also contributed considerably to the soundtracks of Bollywood films in the 1980s and 1990s (Disco Dancer, Namak Halaal, Dance Dance, Sharaabi, etc.).
