  • The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples or World Tribal Day is observed on 9 August every year to raise awareness and protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population.
  • Theme for 2021: ‘Leaving no one behind: Indigenous peoples and the call for a new social contract.’ 

World Lion Day- 10 August

  • World Lion day is observed every year on 10 August to raise awareness about the conservation of lions.
  • India is recorded as the country with the highest lion population with an increase of 29 per cent from 2015 to 2020.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi transfers about Rs.19,500 crores to over 9.75 crore farmers under the PM KISAN Scheme

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually transferred about Rs.19,500 crores to over 9.75 crore beneficiary farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme.
  • The union government has so far transferred nine instalments amounting around Rs.1.57 lakh crores to farmer families under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme.
  • An annual financial benefit of Rs.6000 is provided to eligible beneficiary farmer families, payable in three equal four-monthly instalments of Rs.2000 each under the PM-KISAN scheme.

Indian Railways plans to set up temporary exhibition-cum-sale stalls of handloom and khadi at 75 railway stations on Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav

  • India is celebrating Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav to commemorate the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence.
  • As a part of this celebration, Indian Railways will set up temporary exhibition-cum-sale stalls of handloom and khadi material at 75 selected railway stations in India. These stalls will be a symbol of ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’.
  • To promote the sale of handloom and khadi in the country, these stalls will be set up by the Indian Railways in coordination with Khadi and Village Industries Commission and national and state handloom development corporations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chairs the United Nations Security Council high-level meeting on maritime security

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the high -level open debate on ‘Enhancing Maritime Security – A Case for International Cooperation’ via video-conferencing.
  • This meeting will discuss ways to effectively counter maritime crime and insecurity and strengthening coordination in the maritime domain.

Union Government announces the launch of India Internet Governance Forum 2021

  • The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced the launch of the India Internet Governance Forum (IIGF) 2021.
  • The theme of this year’s (2021) meeting is ‘Inclusive Internet for Digital India’.
  • IIGF is an internet governance policy discussion platform to bring representatives together from various groups, considering all to discuss public policy issues related to the internet.
  • The India Internet Governance Forum (IIGF) will be constituted by around 12 members from across the government, civil society, industry and associations and will be led by Anil Kumar Jain, CEO of the National Internet Exchange of India.

Union Government targets of achieving 175 gigawatt renewable energy capacity excluding large hydro by December 2022

  • Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy and Power K. Singh has announced that the union government has set a target of achieving 175 gigawatt of renewable energy capacity excluding large hydro by December 2022.
  • The Union Government has taken several steps to promote renewable energy in India, including permitting foreign direct investment (FDI) up to 100 per cent under automatic route and laying of new transmission lines.

  • Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in New Delhi was adjudged the ‘best airport in India and Central Asia’ for the third consecutive year in the 2021 Skytrax World Airport Awards.
  • IGAI has also improved its overall ranking, moving from number 50 in 2020 to number 45 among the world’s top 50 airports in 2021.
  • The Skytrax World Airport Awards is regarded as the quality benchmark for the world airport industry, assessing customer service and facilities across more than 550 airports.

Jammu and Kashmir constructs an international rugby ground under Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP)

  • Jammu and Kashmir Government is constructing an international rugby ground in Srinagar under Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP) programme.
  • It is the mandate of JK Sports Council to develop sports infrastructure to involve maximum youth in sports and channelise their energy in the right direction.
  • This will be India’s first international rugby ground. It is being developed collectively by Rayzon Global and JK Jsports council.

Union Government mobilises Rs.31,290 crores from Sovereign Gold Bond scheme

  • The Union Government has collected 31,290 crores from Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) scheme since its launch in 2015.
  • With the main objective to develop an alternate financial asset and as an alternative to purchasing/holding of physical gold, the SGB scheme was notified by the Union Government on 5 November 2015.
  • The Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme (2021-2022)— Series V or the fifth tranche — was opened for subscription from 9 August till 13 August with a settlement date of 17 August 2021.
  • The issue price of the sovereign gold bond during the subscription period was fixed at Rs.4790 per gram.

  • Equitas Small Finance Bank has launched Equitech, a fintech accelerator aimed at the startup ecosystem. This accelerator will help fintechs curate their products and define a go-to-market strategy.
  • Equitech will focus on banking technology such as payments, lending, CASA, transaction banking, API banking, governance and regulations as well as other technologies such as agri-tech, banking tech, clean energy, government tech and other horizontal segments across key focus areas.

  • GIFT City, India’s first International Financial Services Centre(IFSC), has collaborated with the India Insurtech Association (IIA) to promote financial technology in the insurance sector.
  • The two entities will collaborate on building thought leadership in the field of insurance and creating awareness about GIFT City among Indian and foreign insurance companies.
  • The two institutions will research regulatory sandbox projects for the GIFT-IFSC, which will benefit insurance technology startups, reinsurance businesses, politicians, service providers and individuals.

NEDFi inks an MoU with FINER to promote entrepreneurship in North East India

  • North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Limited (NEDFi) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Federation of Industries of North- Eastern Region (FINER) to promote and foster entrepreneurship, create jobs and create empowerment for weak sectors.
  • To provide exclusive support to entrepreneurs in the Kamrup area, corporation has set up a branch of NEDFi in Guwahati on the premises of the NEDFi House in Assam’s Dispur

RBI empanels Karnataka Bank as ‘agency bank’ for government business

 

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has empanelled Karnataka Bank to act as an “agency bank” to facilitate transactions related to government businesses.
  • As an empanelled “agency bank”, Karnataka Bank is now authorised to undertake the government businesses such as revenue receipts and payments on behalf of the Union and state governments, pension payments of governments, collection of stamp duty charges and other items of work advised by the RBI.

  • Former Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait was appointed as Afghanistan national cricket team’s bowling coach.
  • He was a part of the Australian squad that triumphed in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, taking 23 wickets in the tournament. He was also a part of the Australian squad, which finished second in the 2010 ICC T20 World Cup.
