Arun Jaitley resumes charge as Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs

Arun Jaitley is back as the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs after three months. The President has issued orders to this effect.

In Mr. Jaitley’s absence, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal was holding the additional charge of the Finance and Corporate Affairs portfolio.

Jaitley had continued in the Cabinet so far as a Minister without portfolio.


Odisha is to host 2018 Men’s Hockey World Cup for the First Time

Odisha government has decided to launch a build-up campaign in 17 cities, ahead of the 2018 Men’s Hockey World Cup Tournament in the state.

The campaign will be organised in Rourkela, Mumbai, New Delhi, Bhubaneswar and other important cities and hockey playing states.

A number of internationally-acclaimed sports celebrities will take part in promotion of the mega event.


Chandrayaan-I data confirms presence of ice on Moon: Nasa

Scientists have found frozen water deposits in the darkest and coldest parts of the Moon’s polar regions using data from the Chandrayaan-I spacecraft, that was launched by India ten years ago.

At the southern pole, most of the ice is concentrated at lunar craters, while the northern pole’s ice is more widely, but sparsely spread.

With enough ice sitting at the surface—within the top few millimetres—water would possibly be accessible as a resource for future expeditions to explore and even stay on the Moon.

It will be a key mission focus for NASA and commercial partners, as humans endeavour to return to and explore the Moon.


President Kovind Inaugurates International Buddhist Conclave In New Delhi

The President Ram Nath Kovind  inaugurates the International Buddhist Conclave in New Delhi.

The theme of the conclave is Buddha Path – The Living Heritage which aims to showcase Buddhist Heritage in India and boost tourism to the Buddhist sites in the country.

The Ministerial level delegation from ASEAN countries will participate in the conclave along with delegates from 29 countries including US, UK, Germany, France and Russia. This year Japan is the partnering country for the Buddhist conclave.

Tourism Ministry is organising the conclave in collaboration with Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh governments.

Iran unveils first domestic fighter jet

Iran unveiled a new domestic fighter jet with President Hassan Rouhani. The plane was first publicly announced on Saturday by Defence Minister Amir Hatami.

The jet was kept at the National Defence Industry exhibition in Tehran. The jet is a fourth-generation fighter, with “advanced avionics” and multi-purpose radar and it is “100 percent indigenously made”.

Flipkart unveils dedicated portal for refurbished goods:  ‘2gud’

The Retail giant Walmart-owned leading e-tailer Flipkart has unveiled a dedicated portal ‘2Gud’ for refurbished goods, including mobile phones, laptops and tablet.

The independent platform ‘2Gud’ aims to bring affordability, accessibility and availability to the refurbished market, while also addressing the problem of trust and convenience.

The launch of the independent platform for old goods, which was developed over the last 10 months, comes a week after Flipkart shut down the eBay India operations.


Flipkart acquires AI startup Liv.ai to start the ‘voice’ revolution

India’s largest online marketplace Flipkart has bought Liv.ai, an artificial intelligence (AI) start-up which has built a platform that converts speech to text in 10 Indian languages.

Liv.ai was founded in 2015 by former IIT graduates Subodh Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar and Kishore Mundra. It has previously raised funding from investors, including Astrac Ventures.

Liv.ai converts speech to text in Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, among others.

Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) emerged as the world’s second fastest growing airport

The Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has emerged as the second fastest growing airport in the world in the first half of 2018 in terms of actual growth in number of passengers.

Only Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport has topped the list.

RoutesOnline, a company focussing on the quality and standards of aviation globally, made public its report on major airports in the world.

New Delhi’s airport is placed sixth while Hyderabad is placed 17th in terms of actual growth of passengers.


AWARDS AND HONOURS

David Beckham to receive UEFA President’s Award

David Beckham will become the third Englishman to receive the UEFA President’s Award. Sir Bobby Robson (2002) and Sir Bobby Charlton (2008) are the previous English winners.

The President’s Award recognises outstanding achievements, professional excellence and exemplary personal qualities. It was announced by UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin.

Beckham, who will receive this award in Monaco later this year, made 762 appearances for club and country, scoring 130 goals and delivering many more assists in a career that spanned over 20 years. He won the UEFA Champions League with Manchester United in 1999.

Tennis: Ankita Raina settled for a bronze medal

Indian tennis player Ankita Raina settled for a bronze medal at the Asian Games after losing to China’s Zhang Shuai in the women’s singles semifinal in Palembang.


OBITUARY

Veteran Journalist Kuldip Nayar Passes Away

The Eminent writer and journalist Kuldip Nayar has passed away. Mr. Nayar, a Punjabi, was born in Sialkot in 1923.

The book named Beyond The Lines is the autobiography of  Kuldip Nayar.


Former Odisha Minister Jadunath Das Mohapatra passed away

The Former Odisha Minister Jadunath Das Mohapatra has passed away.

He was elected to Assembly from Soro constituency twice and had become a minister of the State. He was the Education minister in the cabinet of former Chief Minister Janaki Ballav Patnaik.

Mohapatra also authored Odia novels ‘Gramya Nadira Tire’, ‘Bibhisika’, ‘Manisha Rajyaran Jale’ and ‘Parasamani’ among others.
