  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the 37th edition of the PRAGATI (Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation) Meeting, which brings together the Union and the state governments.
  • Nine agenda items were discussed at this meeting, including eight projects and one scheme. Three projects each from the Union Ministry of Railways and the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, as well as two projects from the Union Ministry of Power, were reviewed at this meeting.

  • National Security Advisor of India Ajit Doval virtually hosted the inaugural meeting of the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) National Security Advisor

Union Ministry of Jal Shakti launches a 100-day campaign named ‘Sujalam’ as a part of the 75 years of India’s independence

  • Union Jal Shakti Ministry launched Sujalam, a 100-day campaign, as a part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ (75 years of India’s independence to build more Open Defecation Free (ODF) plus villages by implementing wastewater management at the local level.
  • This campaign would help in wastewater management, which would in turn help in the restoration of water bodies. The focus area of this campaign is to ensure that all newly emerging households in the village have access to toilets.

Union Cabinet approves an MoU between the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and the Institute of Professional Accountants of Russia (IPAR)

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and the Institute of Professional Accountants of Russia (IPAR) to strengthen cooperation in matters of the accountancy profession through an exchange of views, information in respect of professional accountancy training, professional ethics, technical research and professional development of accountants.

Union Government launches SAMRIDH programme to boost startups

  • Union Minister of Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the ‘Startup Accelerators of MeitY for pRoduct Innovation, Development and growth SAMRIDH)’ programme to provide a conducive platform for Indian software product startups to help them scale up their businesses.

Karnataka becomes the first state in India to implement National Education Policy 2020

  • Karnataka became the first state in India to officially implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
  • The teaching programme under the new education policy will begin from 1 October 2021.
  • The process of admissions under this new policy will be initiated by the universities in the state.

Note: Madhya Pradesh became the second state in India to officially implement the National Education Policy 2020.

Infosys becomes the fourth Indian firm to hit $100 billion market capitalisation (m-cap)

  • Infosys achieved a landmark market capitalisation (m-cap) of $100 billion and became the fourth Indian company to hit that mark.
  • Reliance Industries ($140 billion), Tata Consultancy Services ($115 billion) and HDFC Bank ($100.1 billion) are the other Indian firms in the club with Infosys.

  • India and the Maldives signed the largest-ever infrastructure project in the Maldives which will be developed by a Maharashtra-based business, AFCONS Infrastructure Limited.
  • The 6.7 km Greater Male Connectivity Project (GMCP) will be the largest civilian infrastructure project in the Maldives.
  • India will fund a $400 million Line of Credit and a $100 million grant for the implementation of the Greater Male Connectivity Project.

  • The navies of India and the Philippines carried out a ‘Maritime Partnership Exercise’ in the West Philippine Sea to strengthen maritime security collaboration with partner nations.
  • INS Ranvijay (Guided Missile Destroyer, D55) and INS Kora (Guided Missile Corvette, P61) carried out the maritime exercise with BRP Antonio Luna (Frigate, FF 151) of the Philippine Navy.

  • Noted elocutionist of West Bengal Gouri Ghosh passed away at the age of 83 in Kolkata after a prolonged illness. Gouri Ghosh was awarded Kazi Sabyasachi Samman by West Bengal in 2018.

Former England cricket captain Ted Dexter passed away at 86                  

  • Former England cricket captain Ted Dexter passed away at Wolverhampton at the age of 86.
  • He was known as ‘Lord Ted’ and he had made 62 Test appearances for England in total, scoring 4,502 runs as a powerful middle-order batsman and taking 66 wickets.
