NATIONAL

1st International Conference on Sustainable Water Management at Mohali:

  • The first International Conference under the aegis of National Hydrology Project, Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation is being organised by Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) during 10-11 December 2018 at Indian School of Business (ISB), Mohali on the theme ‘Sustainable Water Management’.

  • The aim of the Conference is to foster the participation of and dialogue between various stakeholders, including governments, the scientific and academic communities, so as to promote sustainable policies for water management, to create awareness of water-related problems, motivate commitment at the highest level for their solution and thus promote better management of water resources at local, regional, national and international levels.


Kannur International Airport in Kerala begins operations:

  • The Kannur international Airport-KIAL in Kerala began its operations with Union minister for civil aviation Suresh Prabhu and Kerala Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan jointly lighting the lamp inside the terminal building, marking the inauguration of the airport. With the Kannur airport becoming a reality, Kerala is the only state in the country with four international airports.

Russian Navy Ships Arrive In India For Bilateral Maritime Exercise:

  • Russian Federation Navy (RuFN) ships Varyag, Admiral Panteleyev and Boris Butoma has arrived at Visakhapatnam to participate in INDRA NAVY, the bilateral maritime exercise with Indian Navy. The 10th edition of the exercise will be conducted from December 9-16. This edition of the exercise would be held in two phases. The Harbour Phase would be held at Visakhapatnam from December 9-12. The Sea Phase from December 13-16 would be conducted in the Bay of Bengal.

  • During exercise INDRA NAVY-18, the Indian Navy would be represented by INS Ranvir, INS Satpura, INS Kadmatt, IN Ships Kuthar and Khanjar and INS Jyoti.


Military Literature Festival 2018 begins in Chandigarh:

  • The three-day Military Literature Festival (MLF) 2018, kick-started in Chandigarh. The festival is a joint initiative of military historian and Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and Punjab Governor VP Singh Badnore. MLF 2018 aims to offer an opportunity for the younger generation to get acquainted with India’s glorious military heritage, while also bringing a host of cultural activities, food cuisines and competitions to the public.


India’s first underwater museum to open off Puducherry coast soon:

  • India is set to get its first underwater museum off the Puducherry coast, giving a boost to tourism in the Union territory. INS Cuddalore, a minesweeper decommissioned in March after it travelled 30,000 nautical miles in 30 years, will be turned into a museum.

  • The minesweeper will be deployed in the seabed 7 km off Puducherry at a depth of 26 metres. The 60-metre long and 12-metre wide vessel will be a popular destination for scuba diving and snorkelling. The Navy has agreed to gift the vessel to promote tourism in Puducherry.

Japanese Parliament approves legislation allowing foreign workers to ease labour shortage:

  • In Japan, parliament has approved a controversial new law allowing hundreds of thousands of foreigners into the country to ease labour shortages. From April 2019, foreigners will be allowed to take up jobs in sectors such as construction, farming and nursing. The law creates two new visa categories.

  • Workers in the first category will be allowed in for five years if they have a certain level of skill and some proficiency in Japanese. Workers with a higher level of skills would qualify for the second visa category and would eventually be allowed to apply for residency.

BANKING & BUSINESS

NABARD signed USD 100 mn agreement with UNFCC approved Green Climate Fund to boost solar power:

  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) signed an agreement with Green Climate Fund (GCF) to infuse USD 100 million into the project designed to unlock private sector initiatives for creation of rooftop solar power capacity across India.

  • The USD 250 million project, to be executed by Tata Cleantech Capital Ltd, will receive the GCF support through NABARD, which is the National Implementing Entity (NIE) for the UNFCC-promoted Fund that supports the efforts of developing countries to respond to the challenge of climate change.


AIIB Clears $400 million loan for water supply project in Andhra Pradesh:

  • The board of Beijing-headquartered Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank’s (AIIB) has approved a $400-million loan for a water sanitation project in Andhra Pradesh, taking the overall exposure of the bank to India to $2 billion spread over nine projects. India is the second largest shareholder of the bank after China.

Coca-Cola makes changes to board of directors:

  • James Robert B. Quincey, president and chief executive officer of Coca-Cola Co., has been elected chairman of the company’s board. He will succeed Muhtar Kent, who plans to retire in April 2019.

  • Mr. Quincey will become Coca-Cola’s 14th chairman in the company’s 132-year history following the company’s annual meeting in April 2019. He will then serve as chairman and c.e.o. Brian Smith is set to take over as president and chief operating officer on Jan. 1.


Upendra Kushwaha resigns from Union Council of ministers:

  • Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP) chief Upendra Kushwaha has resigned from Minister of State for Human Resource Development. The Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) chief is likely to quit the BJP-led NDA alliance as he is not happy with the BJP over its seat sharing formula in Bihar for the 2019 elections.

Mexico’s Vanessa Poncede Leon wins Miss World 2018 crown at grand event held in China’s Sanya:

  • Mexico’s Vanessa Ponce de Leon won the coveted Miss World 2018 crown at a grand event held in the Chinese city, Sanya. Thailand’s Nicolene Pichapa Limsnukan was declared the runner-up. Former Miss World Manushi Chillar presented the crown to the new winner during the pageant in which 118 contestants participated. India’s Anukreethy Vas failed to make a mark at the pageant as she could not even make it to the top 30.


Sanctuary Wildlife Awards 2018 released by Sanctuary Wildlife Foundation:

  • Sanctuary Wildlife Foundation presented the Sanctuary Wildlife Awards 2018 to 8 environmentalists. They are

  • Lifetime Service Award: Vandana Shiva

  • Wildlife Service Awards: Rohit Choudhury, Imran Siddiqui, Iho Mitapo, Govardhan Meena, Puja Mitra.

  • Young Naturalist Award: Maitreya Sukumar

  • Green Teacher Award: Nikita Pimple


IIT Kharagpur wins DSCI Excellence Award 2018:

  • IIT Kharagpur has won the DSCI Excellence Award 2018 for cyber security education by Data Security Council of India, an industry body on data protection set up by NASSCOM.

  • The institute has been making waves in the areas of cyber security, IoT (Internet of Things) security and associated areas in artificial intelligence and a number of research ventures of the department of computer science and engineering at IIT Kharagpur were primarily considered for this award.


Sundaram Finance MD T T Srinivasaraghavan awarded lifetime achievement award by PTI chairman:

  • Sundaram Finance Managing Director T T Srinivasaraghavan was awarded the lifetime achievement award by publisher and former Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, and the Press Trust of India, Chairman, N Ravi.


SPORTS

Ajay Rohera creates world record for highest first-class debut score:

  • Rookie Madhya Pradesh opener Ajay Rohera etched his name in the record books by slamming the highest first-class score on debut. He remained unbeaten on 267 against Hyderabad in their Ranji Trophy Elite Group-B Cricket in Indore. 21-year-old Rohera’s 267 not out is a world record. The record was earlier held by former Mumbai stalwart Amol Mazumdar, who had hit 260 versus Haryana at Faridabad in 1994.


Khelo India Youth Games to be held in Pune from January 9, 2019:

  • Khelo India Youth Games-2019 will be held in Pune of Maharashtra from the 9th to 20th of January. In its second edition, the games which is an initiative of the Central Government, has expanded in its scope, and will allow participants to compete in two categories, (Under 17) and (Under 21), this year. 


Shubhankar Sharma becomes youngest Indian to win Asian Tour Order of Merit:

  • Shubhankar Sharma became the fifth and youngest Indian golfer to become the Asian Tour Order of Merit champion with two events remaining and with a current prize money of $755, 944.


Anushka, Chaitanya emerge youngest winners at US Kids Golf event:

  • Anushka Gupta and Chaitanya Gupta emerged champions in under-7 girls and boys’ competition respectively at the US Kids Golf India Tour’s first event in Gurugram.

  • The US Kids Golf India Tour 2018-19 edition will carry ranking points, and with participation in a minimum of four events out of the eight, the junior golfers will be able to gain qualification for the US Kids World Championship, US Kids European Championships and US Kids Teen World Championship.

Human Rights Day:10 December

  • Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10th December – the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year, Human Rights Day marks the 70th anniversary.

  • This year the Human Rights Day would be celebrated with the theme “Stand Up For Human Rights”.


16th International Anti-Corruption Day:

  • International Anti-Corruption Day has been observed annually, on 9 December, since the passage of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption on 31 October 2003 to raise public awareness for anti-corruption.


OBITUARY

PRO in PMO, senior journalist Jagdish Thakkar passes away:

  • Public Relations Officer (PRO) in the prime minister’s office and senior journalist Jagdish Thakkar passed away in New Delhi at the age of 72.


Ex-Soviet Dissident Lyudmila Alexeyeva Dies Aged 91:

  • Lyudmila Alexeyeva, a Soviet-era dissident who became a symbol of resistance in modern-day Russia as a leading rights activist, died after a long illness at the age of 91 in Moscow.


Mushirul Hasan, noted historian, passes away:

  • Historian Mushirul Hasan, who has extensively written on India’s Partition, passed away. He was 69 years old. In his book When Stone Walls Cry, Mr. Hasan presents the unknown facets of prison life of the Nehrus and how that transformed their vision and character.


Marketing Superstar’ Nabankur Gupta passes away at 70:

  • Marketing veteran Nabankur Gupta, popularly known as ‘Nobby’ Gupta, has passed away following a brief illness at the age of 70. Gupta was a marketing master with over three decades of experience in the industry. Gupta was the first Indian to have been conferred the tittle of ‘Marketing Superstar’ by Advertising Age International, New York, in 1995.


Ex – Colombian president Belisario Betancur passed away at 95:

  • Former Colombian President Belisario Betancur, whose bold efforts to reach a peace deal with leftist rebels in the 1980s were undone by drug-fuelled bloodletting and an explosion of violence backed by state security forces, passed away at the age of 95.
