NATIONAL

Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to notify the Korean Won (WON) and Turkish Lira (TRY) in the List of Currencies for Exchange Rate:

DAILY CURRENT AFFAIRS: DECEMBER 12, 2018

  • Under Section 14 of the Customs Act, 1962, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) notifies the Rate of Exchange for the purpose of conversion of foreign exchange to Indian Rupees (INR) and vice versa for assessment of imports & exports. Currently, CBIC notifies exchange rates for 20 currencies for the purpose of valuation of imported and exported goods and it has been now decided to include 2 more currencies namely Korean Won (WON) & Turkish Lira (TRY) in the list of such currencies.

  • Notifying Korean Won and Turkish Lira by CBIC will facilitate trade & business by easing the process of conversion of these currencies into INR and vice versa.


Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba inducts Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV) submarine rescue system into Indian Navy:

  • Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Sunil Lanba has inducted the first state-of-the-art Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV) submarine rescue system into the Indian Navy. With the induction of the DSRV, it has further enhanced the Indian Navy’s capability to undertake submarine rescue operations in the high seas.

  • The Navy had signed the 2000 crore rupees contract in March 2016 to procure the DSRVs from the UK-based Messrs James Fisher Defence. Admiral Lanba said the second DSRV will be inducted into the Indian Navy in April 2019 and it will be based in Vishakhapatnam.


UP Government decides to establish an umbrella university to be named after former PM late Atal Bihari Vajpayee:

  • The Uttar Pradesh Government has decided to establish an umbrella university to control all the medical and dental colleges and nursing institutions in the state. The university will be named after former Prime Minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting headed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at Lucknow. It will also help in transparency in entrance and examination system.

Two-day Conference ‘AYUSHCHARYA’ on Dinacharya and Ritucharya for public health promotion organised at New Delhi:

  • All India Institute of Ayurveda, New Delhi organized a National conference ‘AYUSHCHARYA’ on Dinacharya (Daily Regimen) and Ritucharya (Seasonal Regimen) for public health promotion” on 10th and 11th of December 2018.

  • To make the AYUSHCHARYA Calendar-2019 & Dinacharya booklet easy to understand, number of photographs has been used tastefully.


To connect with Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), an online portal “ENSURE” has been launched:

  • Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shri Radha Mohan Singh launched a portal ENSURE– National Livestock Mission- Entrepreneurship Development and Employment Generation (EDEG) developed by NABARD and operated under the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries.

  • Under the new process, controlling officer/branch manager of the bank, after scrutinizing & sanctioning of proposal, uploads the subsidy claims in the portal. The subsidy will be approved within 30 days from the date of sanction of loan.


Regional Conference on ‘Good Governance- Focus on Aspirational Districts’ to begin in Thiruvananthapuram:

  • The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Government of India in association with Government of Kerala is organizing a Regional Conference on December 10- 11, 2018 at Thiruvananthapuram on ‘Good Governance – Focus on Aspirational Districts’. The Governor of Kerala Shri Justice (Retd.) P. Sathasivam will inaugurate the 2-day event.

  • This Conference is an effort to create a common platform to share experiences in the formulation and implementation of best practices in citizen centric governance, improved public service delivery through e-Governance, transparent, accountable and citizen-friendly effective administration.


Delhi govt starts 10-day ‘Operation Minimum Wage’ drive:

  • Delhi government has started a 10-day drive ‘Operation Minimum Wage’ and raided 20 places including government and non-government organisations. The labourers who are not paid as per the Minimum Wage Act can call 155214 and register their complaint.

  • The minimum wage for the unskilled labourers is Rs 14,000 per month while Rs 15,400 per month for semi-skilled and Rs 16,962 for skilled. Violations or non-compliance will attract strict action as per the Minimum Wages Act, 2017.


Lepa Rada becomes 24th district of Arunachal Pradesh:

  • The 24th district of Arunachal PradeshLepa Rada was formally inaugurated, a day after Shi Yomi became a new district. Lepa Rada is carved out of the Lower Siang district, comprising four administrative circles – Tirbin, Dari, Sago and Basar.

  • Chief Minister Pema Khandu unveiled the vision statement of the new district in presence of Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, and also inaugurated a 4-km PMGSY road from Basar to Lape.


INTERNATIONAL

Israel becomes a member of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF):

  • Israel has become a full member of the Financial Action Task Force, an international body set up to combat money laundering, terrorist financing and other threats to the international financial system.

  • The Jewish state has now taken its place alongside 37 other members including most of the G20, the world’s 20 leading industrialized and emerging economies just 16 years after being blacklisted by the organization.

Jana Small Finance Bank Launches Jana Bankable Debit Card:

  • Recently, in association with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jana Small Finance Bank launched the offer-loaded, Jana Bankable Debit Card. Jana Small Finance Bank is the official sponsor of BCCI for all the cricket matches that are played in India.

  • This card is designed for cricket fans who like deals and offers on online shopping, gym membership, health & wellness products, food delivery, music and travel.


RBI slaps Rs 1 crore fine on Indian Bank for violating cyber security norms:

  • The Reserve Bank of India said it has imposed a fine of Rs 1 crore on Indian Bank for violating cyber security norms. The RBI has imposed, by an order dated November 30, 2018, a monetary penalty of Rs 10 million on Indian Bank for contravention of circular on Cyber Security Framework.


World Bank Praises India’s Renewable Energy Success:

  • The World Bank has praised India’s success in renewable energy auctions that delivered record-setting low prices for solar power and said the number of countries with strong policy frameworks for sustainable energy more than tripled from 17 to 59 in the eight years till 2017.

  • Many of the world’s largest energy-consuming countries significantly improved their renewable energy regulations since 2010, said the World Bank’s report “Regulatory Indicators for Sustainable Energy (RISE) 2018” charting global progress on sustainable energy policies. The report was released on the side-lines of the 24th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24).

Former Finance Secretary Shaktikanta Das appointed new RBI Governor:

  • Former Finance Secretary Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the new Governor of the apex bank (RBI). Mr. Das will have a tenure of three years. Mr Das is currently the Member of the Finance Commission.


SWIFT India Ropes former SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya as board chairman:

  • SWIFT India said it has appointed former SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya as the new Chairman of its board. SWIFT India is a joint venture of top Indian public and private sector banks and SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication).

  • Bhattacharya will succeed former banker M. V. Nair, who is stepping down after completing five years with the company.


AWARDS & HONOURS

Naomi Osaka’s coach, Sascha Bajin, named WTA Coach of the Year:

  • Sascha Bajin was chosen as the first winner of the WTA Coach of the Year award after helping Naomi Osaka to her US Open title.

  • The first season as a team for Bajin and Osaka produced her first WTA title at Indian Wells, then her first Grand Slam title in New York, where she beat Serena Williams in the final. Bajin used to work with Williams.


Golden State Warriors Named Sports Illustrated’s 2018 Sportsperson of the Year:

  • The three-time NBA champion Golden State Warriors are the fourth team to be honored as Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year. The Golden State Warriors have been named Sports Illustrated’s 2018 Sportsperson of the Year.


Mary Kom honoured with Meethoileima title:

  • Manipur Government has honoured AIBA World Women Boxing Gold medalist MC Mary Kom with the title “Meethoileima” (par excellent queen) at a function in Imphal. On the occasion, State Chief Minister N. Biren Singh handed over a cheque of ten lakh rupees to her. The Chief Minister also declared that the Imphal West DC Road towards Game Village will be named as MC Mary Kom Road.


Slain journalist Khashoggi named Time magazine’s “Person of the Year”:

  • Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was murdered in October at his country’s Istanbul consulate, has been named Time magazine’s “Person of the Year” alongside several other journalists. The magazine has also honoured Philippine journalist Maria Ressa, Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, currently imprisoned in Myanmar among others.


BOOKS & AUTHORS

Book “Of Counsel: The Challenges of the Modi Jaitley Economy” was launched in Mumbai:

  • The book, ‘Of Counsel: The Challenges of the Modi-Jaitley Economy’ written by former chief economic adviser Arvind Subramanian was launched in Mumbai.

  • Penguin Random House, the publisher, describes the book as “an inside account of his (Subramanian’s) rollercoaster journey as the chief economic advisor to the Government of India from 2014 to 2018”.

UNICEF Day 2018: 11 December 2018

  • The United Nations General Assembly created UNICEF on December 11, 1946 when children devastated as a solution to the growing need to for emergency assistance for children affected by World War II. Headquartered in New York celebrated its 71st foundation day this year.


International Universal Health Coverage Day: 12th December

  • United Nations proclaimed 12 December as International Universal Health Coverage Day (UHC Day) by resolution 72/138. The theme for the 2018 UHC Day is: “Unite for Universal Health Coverage: Now is the Time for Collective Action”.


OBITUARY

Senior Kerala Congress Leader CN Balakrishnan passed away at 87:

  • Senior Congress leader and former Kerala minister CN Balakrishnan died at a private hospital in Kochi due to pneumonia. He was 87.
