National Consumer Rights Day – 24 December

  • National Consumer Rights Day, also called as Bharatiya Grahak Diwas, is celebrated annually on 24 December to highlight the importance of the consumer movement and spread awareness about the rights and responsibilities of every consumer. On this day, the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, was enacted.
  • The theme of National Consumer Day for 2021 is ‘Tackling Plastic Pollution’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ₹1,000 crores to bank accounts of self-help groups

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ₹1,000 crores to bank accounts of self-help groups (SHGs) to benefit around 16 lakh women. This amount was transferred under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM).
  • This mission aims to provide women, especially those at the grassroots, with the necessary skills, incentives and resources.
  • He also released over ₹20 crores to more than one lakh beneficiaries under the ‘Mukhya Mantri Kanya Sumangala Scheme’, which provides conditional cash transfer to a girl children at different stages of their life.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched multiple projects and schemes worth over ₹2,095 crores in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
  • He also mentioned that the white revolution can play an important role in increasing the income of farmers.

Naveen Patnaik inaugurates Odisha’s longest bridge ‘T-Setu’ over Mahanadi

  • Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik inaugurated ‘T-Setu’, Odisha’s longest bridge over Mahanadi in the Cuttack district. The 4 km long bridge connecting Gopinathpur in Badamba, Baideswar in Banki to Singhanath Pitha, located in the middle of the river, has been built in the shape of the English alphabet ‘T’ at a cost of ₹111 crores.
  • The bridge, which has a footpath of 5 metres width on both sides, will benefit the people of Cuttack and Khurda and reduce the distance between Badamba and Baideswar in Banki by 45 km.

Bank of Baroda achieves the top position in digital payments for 202021

  • According to the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Bank of Baroda has won the top position in overall digital transactions amongst large banks for FY21 (2020–21).
  • To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the independence of India, MeitY is celebrating ‘Digital Payments Utsav’. As a part of the celebration, Bank of Baroda has been conferred with five DigiDhan awards for FY 2019–20 and 2020–21 in various categories.

H. O. Suri was appointed as the MD and CEO of IFFCO Tokio General Insurance

  • Private sector IFFCO-TOKIO General Insurance has appointed H. O. Suri as its new Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Prior to this, he was director of marketing and Chief Investment Officer.
  • He started his professional journey in 1982 with the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), the world’s largest fertiliser manufacturer in the cooperative Sector.

Finmin senior official Vandita Kaul was appointed as a part-time member of the PFRDA Board

  • Union Finance Ministry has appointed Vandita Kaul, Additional Secretary in the Department of Financial Services (DFS), as a part-time member of the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).
  • She replaced Madnesh Kumar Mishra. She is a 1989 batch officer of the Indian Postal Service.

Kamlesh Gandhi was appointed as the Co-chairman of FIDC

  • Chairman and Managing Director of MAS Financial Services Kamlesh Gandhi was appointed as the Co-Chairman of Finance Industry Development Council (FIDC), in addition to Umesh Revankar, CEO and MD of Shriram Transport Finance Group.
  • FIDC is a representative body of asset and loan financing non-banking financial companies (NBFCs).

Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court

  • Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court (as per Article 223 of the Constitution of India). He will be the Acting Chief Justice after the retirement of Chief Justice Raghvendra Singh Chauhan.

IIT Guwahati team develops efficient perovskite solar cells to produce electricity from sunlight

  • Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have developed hybrid perovksite solar or photovoltaic devices to produce electricity from sunlight, which are highly efficient, cost-effective, easy to manufacture and easily recyclable.
  • These devices were developed to achieve power conversion efficiencies beyond 21 per cent by utilising economical solution-based photovoltaic device processing techniques at mild room temperature and realising high ambient, thermal and optical stability.

DRDO successfully conducts the flight test of indigenously developed High-speed Expendable Aerial the Target ‘Abhyas’

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted the flight test of indigenously developed High-speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT) ‘Abhyas’ from Integrated Test Range at Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
  • The unmanned indigenous aerial target system has been developed by the Bengaluru-based Aeronautics Development Establishment (ADE) along with other laboratories of the DRDO. This system has been designed to meet the high-speed aerial target requirements of the Indian armed forces.

  • Indian Army has launched a contemporary messaging application named ‘ASIGMA’ (Army Secure IndiGeneous Messaging Application).
  • It is a new generation, state-of-the-art, web-based application developed entirely in-house by a team of officers of the Corps of Signals of the Indian Army.

Anahat Singh becomes the first Indian girl to win the Junior Squash Open in the United States

  • A 13-year-old Delhi girl, Anahat Singh became the first Indian to win the prestigious US Junior Squash Open at the Arlen Spectre Centre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She defeated Jayda Marei of Egypt.

India wins the bronze medal by defeating Pakistan in the 2021 Men’s Hockey Asian Champions trophy

  • India defeated Pakistan (4-3) to secure the bronze medal in the 2021 Men’s Hockey Asian Champions trophy held in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
  • South Korea emerged as the champions after beating Japan (4-2) in a shootout following a (3-3) stalemate at the end of the regulation 60 minutes of the title clash.

India spinner Harbhajan Singh announces his retirement from all forms of cricket

  • Veteran Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. He is the first Indian to take a Test hat-trick in the historic 2001 Border–Gavaskar series against Australia.
  • He played 103 Tests, 236 ODIs and 28 T20Is for India. He took 417 wickets in 103 Tests, which is currently the fourth most number of wickets by an Indian bowler in test cricket.
