  • World Cotton Day is observed on 7 October every year to maximise the value of cotton, which includes everything from its properties as a natural fibre to the benefits people receive from its production, transformation, commerce and consumption.

National News


Union Cabinet clears a Rs. 4445 crore proposal for setting up seven PM MITRA parks for the textile sector

  • The Union Cabinet approved the setting up of seven PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) parks as announced in the Union Budget for 2021–22 at an outlay of 4445 crores.
  • These PM MITRA parks will be set up on greenfield or brownfield locations around India, in keeping with Indian Prime Minister’s objective of creating ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’and putting India strongly on the global textiles map.
  • These parks would be developed by a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) owned by the Union and state governments and would get two kinds of support.
  • Development capital support, aimed at assisting infrastructure development, would cover 30% of project costs up to a maximum of Rs. 500 crores for greenfield projects and Rs. 200 crores for brownfield projects. Also, Rs. 300 crores of Competitiveness Incentive Support (CIS) will be provided to each park for the early establishment of textiles manufacturing units.

Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) launches Industrial Park Rating System (IPRS)report 2.0

  • The second edition of the Industrial Park Rating System (IPRS) report was launched by the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Som Prakash in which 41 industrial parks have been assessed as ‘Leaders’in the Industrial Park Ratings System report released by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
  • 90 industrial parks have been rated as under the Challenger category while 185 have been rated as under ‘Aspirers’.
  • This rating is based on some key parameters such as external infrastructure, internal infrastructure, business support services and environment and safety.

Andhra Pradesh Government launches the ‘Swechha’ scheme to provide sanitary napkins to school going girls

  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy launched the Swechha scheme to improve the health and hygiene of adolescent girls studying in government schools and colleges by providing quality sanitary napkins free of cost.
  • Ten sanitary napkins will be given every month to about 10 lakh adolescent girls studying from grades 7–12 in all government schools and intermediate colleges across the state.

  • CoinSwitch Kuber became India’s second crypto exchange to gain unicorn status after CoinDCX.
  • This startup has achieved unicorn status in just over 14 months of operations in India.
  • CoinSwitch Kuber announced raising over $260 million in a SeriesC funding round from a clutch of investors, valuing the company at $1.9 billion.

VISA launches a Card-on-File (CoF) tokenisation service for Grofers, BigBasket and MakeMyTrip

  • VISA partnered with Juspay and launched a Card-on-File(CoF)tokenisation service for e-commerce platforms such as Grofers, BigBasket and MakeMyTrip, in line with the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI)guidelines.
  • The Reserve Bank of India’s CoF tokenisation guidelinesmandates replacing the actual card data with encrypted digital tokens, which are then used to facilitate and authenticate transactions.
  • Card-on-File (CoF) tokenisation provides two key benefits — consumer and ecosystem security and an enhanced checkout experience.

Big-tech platforms come together to set up Merchants Payments Alliance of India

  • Big-tech platforms such as BookMyShow, Disney+ Hotstar,Facebook, NetFlix and Microsoft have come together to form a group called the Merchants Payments Alliance of India (MPAI) to contribute to the policy conversations on behalf of merchants related to the matters of digital payments.
  • MPAI will work towards such causes by addressing and constructively engaging with the payments regulator and industry.
  • This alliance will improve the value of India’s digital markets, provide public interest research and thought leadership on digital payments and build consumer awareness and will also serve as the principal resource platform for merchants and the payments ecosystem to contribute to policy conversations.

TCS extends its partnership with the State Bank of India for another five years

  • Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has extended its partnership with the State Bank of India (SBI)for another five years to maintain and enhance SBI’s application estate around core banking, trade finance, financial reporting and financial inclusion with new features and functionality.
  • This will support SBI’s ability to launch newer offerings and respond to business and regulatory changes.

  • PNB Housing Finance has joined hands with CSC e-Governance Services India to provide last-mile home loan facilities to individuals living in tier 2 and 3 cities.
  • This partnership will play a crucial role in giving wings to the dreams of families of owning a home by promoting home loan facilities and financial services in smaller communities across India.
  • PNB Housing Finance aims to provide door-to-door home loan facilities through the extensive network of CSC.
  • The CSC centres will act as delivery points for Equated Monthly Installment (EMI) re-payments and provide assistance to customers for an online home loan application.

  • A Yemeni humanitarian organisation ‘Jeel Albena Association for Humanitarian Development’ that has provided a lifeline to tens of thousands of people displaced by Yemen’s conflict is the winner of the 2021 UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award.
  • This organisation also supports displaced women to become self-sufficient and renovates schools, benefiting both the local community and displaced populations.

Abdulrazak Gurnah receives the Nobel Prize for Literature 2021

  • Tanzanian novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah received the Nobel Prize for Literature 2021 in recognition of “his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents.”
  • The Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded by The Swedish Academy in Stockholm, Sweden.

Hockey India withdraws from the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games

  • Hockey India withdrew from the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games,citing COVID-19 concerns and UK’s discriminatory quarantine rules for travellers from India.
  • The move came a day after the UKwithdrew from the Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup in Bhubaneswar.
  • The UK recently refused to recognise India’s COVID-19 vaccination certificates and imposed a 10-day hard quarantine on travellers from India even if they were fully vaccinated.

Cartoonist Yesudasan passed away at 83

  • Well-known cartoonist J. Yesudasan,popularly known as Yesudasan,passed away in Kochi at the age of 83.
  • He was the first Chairman of the Kerala Cartoon Academy and the Senior Journalists’ Union in Kochi.
