UNION HOME MINISTER AMIT SHAH TO ARRIVE IN AIZAWL

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will arrive in Aizawl on a day-long tour to
Mr Shah will inaugurate the North East Handloom and Handicraft Exhibition at Government Mizo High School field at Zarkawt in Aizawl.
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga and Union Minister of State for DoNER Dr. Jitendra Singh will be present on this occasion.
This first-ever three-day North-East Handloom and Handicraft Exhibition is fully funded by the North Eastern Council and hosted by Mizoram government.

CENTRE APPROVES 400 CRORE RUPEES FOR BIHAR AND 1200 CRORES FOR KARNATAKA FOR FLOOD RELIEF OPERATIONS

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reviewed the ongoing rescue and relief work of all the flood-affected States.
Keeping in view the severity of flood situation and the fund positions in the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) account of Bihar and Karnataka, the Home Minister has approved advance release of 400 crore rupees to Bihar and 1200 crore rupees to Karnataka from National Disaster Response Fund.
He has further approved the advance release of 2nd instalment of centre’s share of SDRF amounting to over 213 crore rupees to Bihar for the year 2019-20.

CABINET APPROVES NEW STRATEGIC DISINVESTMENT PROCESS

The Cabinet has approved a new process of strategic disinvestment with a view to expediting privatization of selected PSUs.
The Cabinet approved the new policy under which the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management, DIPAM under the Ministry of Finance has been made the nodal department for the strategic stake sale.
DIPAM and NITI Aayog will now jointly identify PSUs for strategic disinvestment. The decision has been taken with a view to streamlining and speeding up the process.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced about increasing the divestment target from 90 thousand crore rupees to 1.05 lakh crore rupees for the current fiscal year.

CHHATTISGARH HC STAYS CONGRESS GOVT DECISION TO ENHANCE RESERVATION FOR OBCS TO 27%

Chhattisgarh High Court has stayed the Congress government decision to enhance reservation for OBCs to 27% that took the overall reservation quota to 82% in the state.
The division bench of Chief Justice P R Ramachandra Menon and Justice Parth Prateem Sahu stayed the reservation order after hearing a bunch of petitions filed by Ved Prakash Singh Thakur, Kunal Shukla and others, challenging enhancing the reservation to 82%.

J&K GOVT PROPOSES TO SET UP CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE FOR FLORICULTURE

Jammu and Kashmir Government is proposing to set up centres of excellence for floriculture, one each in Jammu and Kashmir division, to train and guide growers in floriculture, production of bulbs and cut flowers, perfumery and propagation of aromatic and medicinal plants.
The Government will provide 30 lakh rupees each to the two agricultural universities of the State for training and capacity building of floriculture farmers.

PM PAYS TRIBUTES TO FREEDOM FIGHTER SHYAMJI KRISHNA VARMA ON HIS 162ND BIRTH ANNIVERSARY

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to freedom fighter Shyamji Krishna Varma on his 162nd birth anniversary.
Shyamji Krishna Varma founded the Indian Home Rule Society, India House and The Indian Sociologist in London. He was born on this day in 1857 at Mandvi in Gujarat.

UNION CONSUMER AFFAIRS MINISTER SHRI RAM VILAS PASWAN SHOWCASES BULLET RESISTANT JACKETS MADE UNDER PM MODI’S‘MAKE IN INDIA’ INITIATIVE;

Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Shri Ram Vilas Paswan showcased the Bullet Resistant Jackets being made under the ‘Make in India’ initiative of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
The Jackets have been made using standard (IS 17051: 2018) set by the Bureau of India Standard (BIS) which was notified in December, 2018.
India has now joined selected League of Nations such as US, UK & Germany to have its own standard for Bullet Resistant Jackets.
The Minister said that these jackets are light weight weighing between 5 kilograms to 10 kilograms depending on the threat level and are of the best quality in the world.
Talking about the prices of the jackets it was informed that these jackets range from 70,000 to 80,000 which is considerably lesser than the price of the jackets which were being procured earlier.

DR HARSH VARDHAN LAUNCHES FSSAI’S ‘TRANS-FAT FREE’ LOGO; GIVES A BOOST TO “EAT RIGHT INDIA” MOVEMENT

Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare launched the “Trans Fat Free” logo of Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), at the 8th International Chefs’ Conference (ICC VII).
“The ‘Eat Right India’ movement of FSSAI takes inspiration from the vision of the Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi of giving to the people of this country a ‘New India’ by 2022 that includes health, social security and nutrition.
The Union Health Minister said that “Trans fats are the worst type of fats with known health risks. Dr Harsh Vardhan released a slogan‘Chefs 4 Trans Fat Free’, under which more than 1,000 chefs from different parts of the country took a pledge to use trans-fat free oils in their recipes and work towards their elimination from the diets of Indian populace at large.
India is committed to eliminating it from the food supply and is progressing towards its objective of trans fat elimination by 2022; a year ahead of the global target by WHO.

50TH IFFI 2019 TO BE HELD IN GOA FROM NOVEMBER 20-28

The 50th International Film Festival of India, IFFI 2019, will be held from November 20-28 in Over 200 best films from 76 countries, 26 feature films and 15 non-feature films in the Indian Panorama section will be screened at the film festival.
This was announced by Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar in New Delhi. The Minister said in a first, films with audio deion will be screened for the visually impaired.

This year, the Feature Film Jury was headed by acclaimed filmmaker and screenwriter Priyadarshan.
The Jury has chosen Gujarati film HELLARO as the Opening Feature Film of Indian Panorama, 2019. The Non-Feature Jury selected the film Nooreh as the Opening non-feature film of Indian Panorama.

NIRMALA SITHARAMAN TO INAUGURATE NATIONAL E-ASSESSMENT CENTRE (NEAC) IN NEW DELHI

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will inaugurate National e-Assessment Centre (NeAC) in New Delhi.
The setting up of (NeAC) of the Income Tax Department is a momentous step towards larger objectives of better taxpayer service, reduction of grievances in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of Digital India and promotion of ease of doing business.
There would be no physical interface between taxpayers and tax officers.
Under the new system, taxpayers have received notices on their registered emails as well as on registered accounts on the web portal <incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in>, with real-time by way of SMS on their registered mobile number, specifying the issues for which their cases have been selected for scrutiny.

VICE PRESIDENT SAYS, LITERATURE PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION

Vice President inaugurated the valedictory ceremony of 39th World Congress of Poets at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
It was held from October 2-6, 2019 under the theme ‘Compassion through Poetry’.

India, Bangladesh sign MoU for setting up Coastal Surveillance Radar System in Bangladesh
India and Bangladesh have signed an MoU that will enable Delhi to set up a coastal surveillance system radar in Bangladesh.
The two countries signed seven agreements in New Delhi after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina.
Both Prime Ministers welcomed the initiatives for the development of closer Maritime Security Partnership and establishment of Coastal Surveillance Radar System in Bangladesh.
The coastal surveillance system will pave way for Indo-Bangladesh White Shipping Agreement in future. This will be useful amid growing terror threats via seas.
Other agreements signed by the two countries include MoU for Standard Operating Procedure on the use of Chattogram and Mongla Ports and MoU on withdrawal of 82 cusecs of water from Feni River by India for drinking water supply scheme for Sabroom town in Tripura.

FORMER PMC BANK CHAIRMAN WARYAM SINGH ARRESTED

The Economic Offences Wing of Mumbai Police has arrested Waryam Singh, former chairman of Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative (PMC) Bank, in connection with the alleged 4,355 crore rupees scam at the bank.
This is a fourth arrest in the case. In another development, former managing director of the bank, Joy Thomas, has been remanded to police custody till 17th of October.

SUPREME COURT SAYS ROAD TRAFFIC OFFENCES CAN BE PROSECUTED UNDER THE INDIAN PENAL CODE ALSO

Supreme Court has ruled that road traffic offences can be prosecuted under the Motor Vehicles Act as well as the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The apex court also set aside a Guwahati High Court order to prosecute offenders of road accidents under motor vehicle act only.
The punishment for offenders of motor vehicle accidents under the IPC is stricter compared to the Motor Vehicles Act.
A bench comprising Justices Indu Malhotra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna said the sentence imposed by courts should be commensurate with the seriousness of the offence and should have a deterring effect on wrongdoers.

CSIR DEVELOPS GREEN CRACKERS KEEPING IN VIEW POLLUTION AND HEALTH HAZARDS

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has come up with new and improved formulations in the manufacture of sound-emitting crackers and other fireworks keeping in view the pollution hazard and health risks.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Harsh Vardhan displayed some of the popular products like flower pots, pencils, chakkar and sparklers, developed by CSIR, at a press conference in New Delhi
Rakesh Kumar, Director, said CSIR has developed new formulations for reduced emission light and sound emitting crackers with a 30 per cent reduction in particulate matter using Potassium Nitrate as an oxidant.

NAME OF SQUADRON LEADER RAVI KHANNA ADDED TO NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL

The name of Squadron Leader Ravi Khanna, who was killed by JKLF terrorists in 1990, has been added to the National War Memorial after it was approved by the Indian Air Force.
Squadron Leader Khanna and three other IAF personnel were killed in January 1990 in Kashmir allegedly by JKLF founder Yasin Malik.

INDIA GETS FIRST TRANCHE OF SWISS BANK ACCOUNT DETAILS

India has received the first tranche of details about financial accounts of its residents in Swiss banks under a new automatic exchange of information framework between the two countries.
It marks a significant milestone in the fight against black money suspected to be stashed abroad.
A Federal Tax Administration (FTA) spokesperson said, India figures among 75 countries with which Switzerland’s FTA has exchanged information on financial accounts within the framework of global standards on AEOI.
This is the first time that India has received details from Switzerland under the AEOI framework, which provides for exchange of information on financial accounts that currently active as well as those accounts that were closed during 2018.The next exchange would take place in September 2020.

INDIA TO SHIFT TO BS VI VEHICULAR EMISSION NORMS BY APRIL NEXT YEAR: UNION ENVIRONMENT MINISTER

The Supreme Court of India has ruled that no Bharat Stage IV vehicle shall be sold across the country with effect from April 1, 2020.
Instead, the Bharat Stage VI (or BS-VI) emission norm would come into force from April 1, 2020 across the country.
A three-judge bench ruled that the need of the hour was to move to a cleaner fuel. In 2016, the Centre announced that the country would skip the BS-V norms altogether and adopt BS-VI norms by 2020

REVENUE SECRETARY INAUGURATES NATIONAL E-ASSESSMENT CENTRE

Revenue Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey inaugurated National E-Assessment Centre and Regional E-Assessment Centers.
The National E-Assessment Center is situated in Delhi while Regional E-Assessment Centers are in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Pune, Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad.
The centres have been established to implement the faceless assessment system for Income Tax Return.
The establishment of such centres is aimed at eliminating the interface between Assessing Officer and Assessee to ensure greater transparency and accountability in the system.

DEFENCE MINISTER RAJNATH SINGH TO LEAVE FOR FRANCE

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will leave for France on a two-day visit.
Mr Singh will meet French President Emmanuel Macron. Later, the Minister will participate in the Rafale fighter aircraft handing over ceremony at Merignac along with French Minister of Armed Forces, Florence Parly.
The Minister is also scheduled to hold the Annual Defence Dialogue with the French Minister of Armed Forces.
He will address the CEOs of the French Defence industry during which he is likely to urge them to participate in “Make in India” and the DefExpo to be held in Lucknow in February next year.

GOA GOVERNMENT RELEASES RS 60 CRORE FOR SUPER SPECIALITY BLOCK IN GOA MEDICAL COLLEGE HOSPITAL

The Goa government released Rs 60 crore for the super speciality block being constructed at the Goa Medical College Hospital (GMCH) in Bambolim.
The 500-bed super speciality facility, being built under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), will be inaugurated by the end of this year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the Rs 350 crore project in February, 2018.

DEFENCE MINISTER RAJNATH SINGH APPROVES 4-FOLD INCREASE TO FAMILIES OF BATTLE CASUALTIES

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved a four-fold hike in assistance to the next of kin for all categories of battle casualties from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 8 lakh.
The amount will be granted under the Army Battle Casualties Welfare Fund (ABCWF).
“Earlier, there was a provision of financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the battle casualties which are fatal, 60 per cent and above disability, battle casualties invalided out due to disability and Rs 1 lakh to disability less than 60 per cent.
It was in addition to liberalised family pension, financial assistance from Army Group Insurance, Army Welfare Fund and ex-gratia amount. The ABCWF was instituted in July 2017 and was implemented with effect from April 2016.

HARSIMRAT URGES CENTRE TO NAME AMRITSAR IIM AFTER GURU NANAK

Army’s biggest mountain combat exercise ‘Him Vijay’ begins in Arunachal Pradesh
The Indian Army’s biggest ever mountain combat exercise in Arunachal Pradesh ahead of China President Xi Jinping’s visit to India this month is reported to have irked Beijing, which considers large parts of Arunachal Pradesh as part of South Tibet.
‘Him Vijay’ is the first ever such drill that the military is holding in the northeastern state. Three battle groups, each comprising 4,000 soldiers, are participating in the exercise at a height of 14,000 feet – 100 kms away from the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
The key focus of the exercise is to test mobility, communication and coordination of fast-moving troops in difficult terrain.

PM MODI EXPRESSES HAPPINESS AT GROWING TRADE RELATIONS WITH SINGAPORE

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed happiness at growing investment and trade relations between India and Singapore.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance of Singapore Heng Swee Keat, who called on him in New Delhi, Mr Modi said, the launch of RuPay Card and BHIM app in Singapore has greatly enhanced the ease of financial transactions.
He also noted the successful organization of the second Joint Hackathon in Chennai with the participation of Singaporean students.
The Prime Minister said, all these developments symbolizes the close community, business and innovation partnership between the two countries.
Mr Modi also expressed his appreciation for the participation of Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on the special event to commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at the United Nations in New York last month.

INS TARKASH ARRIVES AT REUNION ISLAND IN FRANCE

As part of Indian Navy’s overseas deployment to Africa, Europe and Russia, Indian Naval Ship Tarkash arrived at St Denis, Reunion Island, France.
The ship is a potent frontline frigate of the Indian Navy equipped with a versatile range of weapons and sensors.
The ship is part of the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet and under the Operational Command of Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, based at Mumbai.

India’s military is placed fourth on a global index that has ranked 133 countries on the basis of their global military prowess, trailing behind only the US, Russia and China in that order.
India’s western neighbour Pakistan ranks 13 on the Global Firepower (GFP) list 2017.
In South Asia, according to GFP 2019, India topped the list with 4^thposition, Pakistan 15^th, Bangladesh 45, Afghanistan 74^th, Sri Lanka 19^th, Nepal 120^th and Bhutan 137^thin the GFP Index 2018.
The top 5 countries in GFP 2019 are: United States, Russia, China, India and France.

UBER MAKES JFK AIRPORT HELICOPTER TAXIS AVAILABLE TO ALL USERS

Ride-hailing company Uber Technologies Inc is taking to the air in New York City where users with a little cash to spare will soon be able to book helicopter flights to John F. Kennedy International airport through their apps.
The company announced its Uber Copter offer saying flights to and from Lower Manhattan will become available to all Uber users on Oct. 7. Uber made the feature available to its premium members in June.
The roughly eight-minute flight will cost between $200 and $225 per person and include ground transportation on either side of the trip.

SCOTLAND BECOMES FIRST UK COUNTRY TO BAN SMACKING

Scotland has become the first country in the UK to make it a criminal offence for parents to smack their children.
The ban on all physical punishment was backed overwhelmingly by 84 votes to 29 by the Scottish Parliament.
The move will give children in Scotland the same protection from assault as adults when it comes into force.
Parents and carers are currently allowed to use “reasonable” physical force to discipline their children.
The smacking ban bill was introduced by Scottish Greens MSP John Finnie, a former police officer, who won the support of the SNP, Labour and Lib Dems as well as his own party and many children’s charities.

MEXICAN ACTRESS APARICIO NAMED UNESCO AMBASSADOR

The United Nations’ cultural agency UNESCO has appointed Mexican actress Yalitza Aparicio as its goodwill ambassador for indigenous peoples.
The 25-year-old actress made history as the first indigenous performer nominated for a best actress honour at the Academy Awards this year for her performance in the film “Roma”, in which she speaks in an indigenous language and in Spanish.

RBI DOES AWAY WITH SINGLE-USE PLASTIC PRODUCTS

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to impose a ban on single-use plastic. The announcement was made by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on 5 October.
There were reports of a nationwide ban on single-use plastic products from October 2, Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, was the starting point of a mass movement to remove single-use plastic, to achieve the target by 2022.

UCO BANK ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF 3 NEW DIGITAL PRODUCTS

Uco Bank, which recently became the regional bank for the east, launched three new digital products in
The new products launched by the bank’s managing director and CEO, A K Goel, were UCash, Digilocker and an app.
UCash enables customers to withdraw money from ATMs through mobile banking without using debit card, a statement issued by the bank.
Digilocker aims to eliminate the use of physical documents and enables sharing of verified electronic documents.
The third product, the new mobile app, integrates four existing apps of the bank – UCO Mbanking, UCO UPI, UCO Mpassbook and UCO Secure- in a single interface, the statement added.

AXIS BANK LAUNCHES SHORT-TERM ONLINE FIXED DEPOSITS

Axis Bank, India’s third-largest private sector bank, announced the launch of ‘Express FD’, a digital fixed deposit (FD) product that allows a customer to open an FD account in three minutes through the digital mode without opening a savings account with the bank.
‘Express FD’ offers attractive interest rates, zero issuance fees and no penalty on pre-mature withdrawal of up to 25% of the amount, the bank said.
A customer can open an Express FD account by investing a minimum Rs 5,000 up to Rs 90,000, for tenure of 6 to 12 months.

BANDHAN BANK, GRUH FINANCE TO MERGE ON OCTOBER 17

Kolkata-based Bandhan Bank and Ahmedabad-based Gruh Finance said that all the regulatory hurdles have been overcome for their merger, with the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) clearing the scheme of amalgamation.
The scheme has been approved by NCLT’s Kolkata and Ahmedabad benches. October 17 has been fixed as the record date following the effectiveness of scheme for determining shareholders of the merged entity.

TATA COMMUNICATIONS APPOINTS AMUR S LAKSHMINARAYANAN AS MD AND GROUP CEO

Tata Communications, a leading global digital infrastructure provider, has appointed Mr Amur S Lakshminarayanan (Lakshmi) as Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer.
His roles in the company included President and CEO of TCS Japan, Global Head of Telecom, Media & Information Services, HiTech and Utilities, and Head of TCS UK & Europe.

INDIAN-ORIGIN PORTUGUESE PRIME MINISTER ANTONIO COSTA POISED FOR RE-ELECTION

Costa’s Socialist Party has won 36.6 % of the vote followed by the center-right Social Democratic Party (PSD) on 27.9%, its worst result since 1983.
The general election witnessed nearly 11 million people to vote in the race for control of Portugal’s 230-seat parliament.
Nicknamed “babush”, Costa is expected to renew his commitment to stick to budget rules.
He joined the youth wing of the Socialist party in 1975 at the age of 14 & he came to power in 2015.

ANUMULA GITESH SARMA APPOINTED INDIA’S HIGH COMMISSIONER TO AUSTRALIA

Diplomat Anumula Gitesh Sarma was appointed as India’s next High Commissioner to Australia, the Ministry of External Affairs said. Sarma is a 1986 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer.
Sarma, who has previously served as the Indian envoy to Uzbekistan and Fiji, will replace AM Gondane as the High commissioner to Australia.

AZIZBEK ASHUROV, A LAWYER, HAS BEEN SELECTED AS THE 2019 WINNER OF THE UN REFUGEE AGENCY’S NANSEN REFUGEE AWARD.

Azizbek Ashurov, a lawyer, whose work has supported the efforts of the Kyrgyz Republic in becoming the first country in the world to end statelessness, has been selected as the 2019 winner of the UN Refugee Agency’s Nansen Refugee Award.
The prestigious annual prize honours individuals, groups and organizations who go to extraordinary lengths to protect refugees, displaced and stateless people around the world.

SCIENTIST TRIO FROM UK, US BAGS NOBEL MEDICINE PRIZE FOR RESEARCH ON HOW CELLS SENSE OXYGEN

US researchers William Kaelin and Gregg Semenza and Britain’s Peter Ratcliffe shared the Nobel Medicine Prize for discoveries on how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability, the Nobel Assembly said.
“They established the basis for our understanding of how oxygen levels affect cellular metabolism and physiological function,” the jury said.
Their research has “paved the way for promising new strategies to fight anemia, cancer and many other diseases.”
The three will share the Nobel Prize sum of nine million Swedish kronor (about USD 914,000).
They will receive their prize from King Carl XVI Gustaf at a formal ceremony in Stockholm on December 10, the anniversary of the 1896 death of scientist Alfred Nobel who created the prizes in his last will and testament.

Julia Koch stood second with a net worth of $41 billion and MacKenzie Bezosstood 3rd with a net worth of $41 billion.

GRAMMY AWARDEE, DRUMMER GINGER BAKER PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 80

On October 6, 2019, English drummer Peter Edward Ginger Baker is familiarly known as Ginger Baker and co-founder of the rock band “Cream” passed away at the age of 80 in England due to old age ailments.
Born on August 19, 1939 in London, England Ginger Baker’s music career spanned for 6 decades and emerged as the first superstar percussionist. He won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 1993 as a member of ‘Cream’.

HARMANPREET KAUR BECOMES FIRST INDIAN TO PLAY 100 TWENTY20 INTERNATIONALS

Harmanpreet Kaur, India’s captain in the shortest format became the first Indian cricketer to play 100 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) as she took the field against South Africa in Surat.
Harmanpreet Kaur achieved this milestone before MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, who have played 98 T20Is for India.
Harmanpreet Kaur made her debut against England in Taunton back in June 2009. The all-rounder has taken 27 wickets and scored 2,003 runs at an average of 28.61 so far in T20Is.

ICC WOMEN’S ODI RANKINGS: INDIA MAINTAINS SECOND POSITION
