President RamNath Kovind sets off on Europe tour

The President Ram Nath Kovind has arrived in Cyprus on the first leg of his three-nation tour to continue India’s high-level engagements with European countries.

He was received by Cyprus’ Minister of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Georgios Lakkotrypis at the Larnaca International Airport.

The President will also visit Bulgaria and the Czech Republic.

Gujarat government partners with US advocacy group for ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ summit

The Gujarat Government has partnered with a top India-centric American advocacy group for the Vibrant Gujarat summit.

Gujarat will host the ninth edition of the annual industry summit ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ from January 18 to 20, 2019, in Gandhinagar and it is expected to be attended by some of the top American corporate leaders.

John Chambers, chairman of US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF), will lead a high-level CEO delegation to the summit next year. The USISPF will also host focused roundtables and investment roadshow programmes, among other events.


Bi-Annual Talks Between Indian and Bangladeshi Border Forces Begin in New Delhi

The bi-annual talks between Indian and Bangladeshi border forces will begin in New Delhi.

Director General of Border Security Force (BSF) KK Sharma will represent the Indian side while Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Major General Md Shafeenul Islam will lead the Bangladeshi side in the talks.

The meeting is aimed at increasing bilateral cooperation in checking trans-border crimes such as smuggling of drugs and narcotics, cattle lifting and gun running across the international border between the two countries.

This is the 47th DG-level conference between the two sides since it began in 1975. A joint record of discussion will also be signed between the BSF and BGB.


Indian Railways And GAIL Sign MoU For Use Of Natural Gas in Railway Workshops

Indian Railways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with M/s GAIL (India) Limited, to provide infrastructure facilities for supply of Natural Gas to Indian Railways Workshops, Production Units and Depots.

It aims to replace Industrial gases like Dissolved Acetylene, LPG, BMCG and Furnace Oil / High Speed Diesel (HSD) oil with environment friendly Natural Gas.

The MoU was signed by Shri Chetram, CAO Indian Railway Organization for Alternate Fuels (IROAF) on behalf of Indian Railways and Shri Gajendra Singh, Director (Marketing) from GAIL (India) Limited.


Home for widows ‘Krishna Kutir’ inaugurated in UP’s Vrindavan

The Minister for Women & Child Development, Smt Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, alongwith Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Adityanath Yogi has inaugurated the widows’ home ‘Krishna Kutir’ at Vrindavan, Mathura, Uttar Pradesh.

Krishna Kutir is a special home for 1000 widows set up by the Ministry of Women & Child Development under Swadhar Greh scheme of the Ministry and is the largest ever facility of its kind created by a government organization.

The widows’ home was constructed with an aim to mitigate the plight of widows living in pathetic condition in Vrindavan.

India, Nepal sign MoU on Raxual-Kathmandu railway line

India and Nepal has exchanged an MoU to build a strategic railway line connecting Bihar’s Raxual city to Kathmandu after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks on all aspects of the bilateral ties with his Nepalese counterpart K P Sharma Oli.

The MoU was signed by Secretary at the Ministry of Physical Planning and Works, Madhusudan Adhikari, from Nepali side and Manjiv Singh Puri from the Indian side.

The strategic railway link between Raxaul and Kathmandu will facilitate people-to-people contact and bulk movement of goods.


UN World Tourism Organisation 2017 report

According to data from the UN’s tourism organisation, a total of 1,323 million international tourist arrivals recorded in destinations around the world. The figure represents an 84 million increase over 2016, and a new record.

International tourist arrivals hit record high in 2017 with India leading the growth in South Asian region.

The UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), a specialized agency of the United Nations announced that positive results in South Asia were largely driven by the strong performance of India, the subregion’s largest destination.

Europe and Africa led the regions with increase in arrivals, with growth of eight per cent and nine percent, respectively

BANKING AND ECONOMY

Licence of Bhilwara Mahila Urban Co-operative Bank cancelled by RBI

The RBI has cancelled the licence of Rajasthan-based Bhilwara Mahila City Co-operative Financial institution because it doesn’t have enough capital and incomes prospects.

The RBI stated it has cancelled the licence of the financial institution with impact from the shut of enterprise on August 31, 2018.

With the cancellation of licence and commencement of liquidation proceedings, the process of paying the depositors of the bank will be set in motion.On liquidation, every depositor is entitled to repayment of deposits up to a monetary ceiling of Rs 1 lakh from the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC).


Mauritius tops India’s FDI charts again

Mauritius remained the top source of foreign direct investment (FDI) into India in 2017-18 followed by Singapore.

The FDI stood at $37.36 billion in the financial year, a marginal rise over the $36.31 billion recorded in the previous fiscal.

While FDI from Mauritius totalled USD 13.41 billion as against USD 13.38 billion in the previous year, inflows from Singapore rose to USD 9.27 billion from USD 6.52 billion.

PNB’s Sunil Mehta has been elected as chairman of IBA

The Indian Banks Association (IBA) has elected Punjab National Bank’s managing director and chief executive, Sunil Mehta, as the new chairman for 2018-19.

The managing committee has also elected Bank of India’s managing director and chief executive, Dina Bandhu Mohapatra, as the deputy chairman.

State Bank of India’s chairman, Rajnish Kumar, and Federal Bank’s managing director, Shyam Srinivasan, will continue as deputy chairmen of IBA.

Madhav Nair, country head and chief executive, Mashreqbank PSC, has been elected as the Honorary Secretary of the association for 2018-19.


Tahira Safdar becomes first woman to head a Pakistan high court

Justice Tahira Safdar has been sworn as the first woman chief justice of a Pakistani high court.

Justice Safdar was sworn in as the chief justice of Balochistan High Court at a ceremony held at the Governor House in Balochistan.

She made history in 1982 when she became the first woman civil judge in Balochistan.

Prime Minister Modi released the book “Moving On, Moving Forward – A Year in Office”

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has released the book “Moving On, Moving Forward – A Year in Office” to mark one year in office of Vice President Venkaiah Naidu. Prime Minister Modi presented the first copy of the book to the Vice President of India. It is the book on experiences of M Venkaiah Naidu during his first year as Vice President of India and Chairman of Rajya Sabha.

It mainly focus on four key issues with various stakeholders across the country and its alignment with the mission of a new India in the making. The book also highlighted the strained political environment in the country.

Dr B.K. Misra named for 2018 Dr B.C. Roy National Award

The eminent neurosurgeon Dr B.K. Misra has been named for this year’s prestigious as an Eminent Medical Person of the Year.

It is the highest medical honour of India and it is  instituted by the Medical Council of India in 1962. It will be given away by President Ram Nath Kovind on July 1 next year, the National Doctors Day.

Misra is the Head of Department of Surgery as well as Neurosurgery and Gamma Knife Radiosurgery at Mumbai’s P.D. Hinduja Hospital.


SPORTS

18th Asian Games: India finishes with biggest ever medal tally

India ended their Asian Games 2018 campaign with the highest medal tally at the tournament ever, with a total of 69 medals which includes 15 gold, 24 silver and 30 bronze medals.

India have thus surpassed their previous highest tally of 65 medals which they registered at the 2010 edition of Asian games in Guangzhou.

China finished on top of the medal tally with 132 gold medals. Indian women hockey captain Rani Rampal will be the country’s flag-bearer in the closing ceremony.

The host cities for Asian games 2018 are Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia. The mascots of the 2018 Asian Games are Bhin Bhin, Kaka, and Atung.


OBITUARY

Jain Muni Tarun Sagar Passes Away

The Jain monk Tarun Sagar has passed away in East Delhi.

He took ‘Jain Sanyas’ at the age of 13 and later emerged as a prominent spiritual personality.

His lectures have been compiled and published in book series also titled Kadve Pravachan.

National Nutrition Week – September (1-7)

The National Nutrition Week will be observed throughout the country from 1st to 7th September. The theme of the National Nutrition Week for 2017 is “Optimal Infant & Young Child Feeding Practices: Better Child Health”.

The basic objective of this annual event is to intensify awareness generation on the importance of nutrition for health which has an impact on development, productivity, economic growth and ultimately National development.


World Coconut Day – September 2

September 2 is observed as World Coconut  Day to make people understand that this crop has a vital role in poverty reduction.

The ‘Asian and Pacific Coconut Community’, headquartered in Jakarta, is associated with the socio-economic aspects of millions of people, who directly and indirectly depend on this crop. All major coconut-growing countries including India are members of the APCC.
