1. India abstained in U.N. Human Rights Council voting against Sri Lanka

• India abstained from voting on the resolution at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) that is critical of Sri Lanka. The resolution was approved by 22 in favour, 11 against and 14 abstentions during the UNHRC’s 46th regular session.
• The Sri Lanka resolution was the first to be voted on using the e-voting procedures established for the first time in UNHRC 46th Session, which has been held virtually.
• This is the second time India has abstained from voting on a resolution on Sri Lanka at the UNHRC since 2014. India has voted twice in favour of resolutions that have been critical of Sri Lanka in 2012 and 2013. It has also voted in favour of a resolution sponsored by Sri Lanka at the special session in 2009.

U.N. Human Rights Council (UNHRC)

• UNHRC is a UN body established in 2006.
• Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland
• It consists of 47 member states selected on a three-year term basis and conducts three regular sessions per year.
• It passes non-binding resolutions on human rights across the world and investigates human rights related allegations.

1. இலங்கைக்கு எதிரான ஐ.நா மனித உரிமைகள் கவுன்சில் வாக்கெடுப்பை புறக்கணித்தது இந்தியா

• இலங்கைக்கு எதிராக ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் மனித உரிமைகள் கவுன்சிலில் (UNHRC) கொண்டுவரப்பட்ட தீா்மானத்தின் மீதான வாக்கெடுப்பை இந்தியா புறக்கணித்தது. UNHRCயின் 46வது அமர்வில் நிறைவேற்றப்பட்ட இத்தீர்மானத்திற்கு ஆதரவாக 22 பேர், எதிராக 11 பேர் மற்றும் 14 பேர் வாக்களிக்காமல் புறக்கணித்தனர்.
• இந்த இலங்கைக்கு எதிரான தீர்மானம், காணொலிக் காட்சி மூலமாக முதன்முதலாக நடத்தப்பட்ட 46வது அமர்வில் முதல் முறையாக கொண்டுவரப்பட்ட மின்னணு வாக்கெடுப்பில் நிறைவேற்றப்பட்ட முதல் தீர்மானம் ஆகும்.

2. POWERGRID launched e-Tendering Portal-PRANIT

• POWERGRID launched e-Tendering Portal-PRANIT.
• POWERGRID is a central PSU under the Ministry of Power. It established an e-Tendering Portal-PRANIT which will lead to less paperwork and ease of operation, making the tendering process more transparent. PRANIT has been certified by Standardisation, Testing and Quality Certification Directorate (STQC), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India.
• POWERGRID in pursuit of digitalisation had been undertaking several innovative enhancements within the SAP SRM framework. POWERGRID is now the only organization in India to have an eProcurement solution on SAP Supplier Relationship Management (SRM), complying with all applicable requirements relating to security and transparency as stipulated by STQC.

3. Andaman & Nicobar achieved 100% Functional Household Tap Connection coverage under Jal Jeevan Mission

• Andaman and Nicobar Islands Lt. Governor Admiral D K Joshi declared that the Andaman and Nicobar Union Territory achieved 100 per cent Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) coverage in the Islands on World water day (22 March).
• The Andaman and Nicobar Islands becomes the third state/UT after Goa and Telangana and the first Union Territory in the country to achieve the target under Jal Jeevan Mission.
• Under the mission, the administration is planning to have a pond with fish at every household in the islands besides water harvesting.

4. Union Cabinet approved COVID-19 vaccination for all above 45 years of age from April 1

• The Centre has approved Covid19 vaccination for everyone aged above 45 starting 1^st of April.
• Union Minister Prakash Javadekar requested all eligible people to immediately register and get vaccinated.
• He also clarified that vaccines are available in enough numbers and there is no scarcity.

• தடுப்பூசிகள் போதுமான எண்ணிக்கையில் உள்ளன என்றும், தட்டுப்பாடு இல்லை என்றும் அவர் தெளிவுபடுத்தினார்.

5. Fitch Ratings revised India’s growth estimate to 12.8% for the next fiscal

• American credit rating agency Fitch has revised India’s GDP growth estimate to 12.8% for the next fiscal from the previous 11% on the back of a looser fiscal stance, and better virus containment.
• The rating agency, in its latest Global Economic Outlook (GEO), anticipates the level of the country’s GDP to remain well below its pre-pandemic forecast trajectory.
• Fitch also expects GDP growth to ease to 5.8% in Fiscal Year 2023.

• World Tuberculosis (TB) Day is observed every year on 24 March.

Tuberculosis

• Tuberculosis or TB is an infectious disease that primarily affects the lungs. The bacteria usually spread to people when an infected person sneezes or coughs.
• TB remains India’s largest infectious killer, with over 4.45 lakh deaths due to TB in 2019, which is 31% of the global mortality. In the last year, it is estimated that over one crore people were infected with TB globally of which 26% or 26 lakhs were estimated to be in India.

7. 24 March is celebrated as the birthday of great Carnatic Musician Muthuswami DikshitarE PIC

• 24 March marks the birthday of the great Carnatic Musician Muthuswami Dikshitar.
• Dikshitar was a poet, singer, veena player, and legendary composer of Indian classical Carnatic music. Muthuswami Dikshitar, Shyama Sastri and Tyāgarayar formed the musical trinity of Carnatic music.
• The compositions of Dikshitar, of which around 500 are commonly known, are noted for their elaborate and poetic descriptions of Hindu gods and temples. However, unlike the other Carnatic compositions, which are predominantly in Telugu, Dikshitar’s compositions are mostly in Sanskrit. He also composed some of his Kritis in Manipravalam, a combination of the Sanskrit and Tamil languages.

8. Union Cabinet approved MoU between India and Afghanistan on Public Service Recruitment

• The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India and Independent Administrative Reforms and Civil Services Commission (IARCSC) of Afghanistan.
• This MoU will facilitate sharing of experience and expertise of both the parties in the area of recruitment and Exchange of information and expertise including books, manuals and other documents which are not confidential.

9. Kerala’s tuberculosis eradication programme has won central government award

·         Kerala’s tuberculosis eradication programme has won the Union government’s award for reducing the prevalence of the disease through various systematic initiatives.

• An expert panel, designated by the Union government, recently found that the southern state has reduced the TB prevalence rate by 37.5 per cent in the last five years as part of achieving the sustainable development goals.
• The disease control was made possible in the southern state through various projects including “Akshaya Kerala’ under the “My Tuberculosis Free Kerala” scheme implemented by the state Health Department, it added.
