1. ‘Oxygen on Wheels’ launched in Chennai

• The Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO) along with the Greater Chennai Corporation has launched “Oxygen on Wheels”.
• It is an initiative where buses with oxygen concentrators will be deployed outside government hospitals. Each bus can handle six patients. The facility is free for patients.

NATIONAL

2. CCEA gives in-principle approval for strategic disinvestment and transfer of management control of IDBI Bank

• The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) gave in-principle approval for strategic disinvestment along with the transfer of management control in IDBI Bank. LIC is the promoter of IDBI Bank with Management Control, and Government of India is the co-promoter.
• The Government of India owns 45.48 per cent and LIC 49.24 per cent.
• Resources through strategic disinvestment of Government equity from the transaction will be used to finance developmental programmes of the Government benefiting the citizen.

3. Cabinet approves the allocation of additional foodgrains to NFSA beneficiaries for May and June

• The Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave approval for allocation of additional foodgrains to all beneficiaries of the National Food Security Act for two months of May and June 2021 under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. Under this scheme, 5 kilograms of rice or wheat per person per month will be given to about 80 crore beneficiaries in the country.

• National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA) provides food and nutritional security to people.
• This act provides subsidised food under the Targeted Public Distribution System.

3. தேசிய உணவுத் பயனாளிகளுக்கு மே மற்றும் ஜூன் ஆகிய இரண்டு மாதங்களுக்கு கூடுதல் உணவு தானியங்களை ஒதுக்கீடு செய்ய மத்திய அமைச்சரவை ஒப்புதல்

• பிரதமர் நரேந்திர மோடி தலைமையிலான அமைச்சரவை, பிரதம மந்திரி கரிப் கல்யாண் அன்ன யோஜனா திட்டத்தின் கீழ் மே மற்றும் ஜூன் 2021 இரண்டு மாதங்களுக்கு தேசிய உணவு பாதுகாப்பு சட்டத்தின் கீழ் அனைத்து பயனாளிகளுக்கும் கூடுதல் உணவு தானியங்களை ஒதுக்கீடு செய்ய ஒப்புதல் அளித்துள்ளது. இத்திட்டத்தின் கீழ் நாட்டில் சுமார் 80 கோடி பயனாளிகளுக்கு மாதம் ஒன்றுக்கு 5 கிலோ அரிசி அல்லது கோதுமை வழங்கப்படும்.

• தேசிய உணவு பாதுகாப்பு சட்டம், 2013 (NFSA) மக்களுக்கு உணவு மற்றும் ஊட்டச்சத்து பாதுகாப்பை வழங்குகிறது.

4. Reservation for Maratha community in education and jobs invalid, says Supreme Court

• The Supreme Court revoked reservation for the Maratha community in education and jobs exceeding 50%. The Supreme Court said that the people from the Maratha community could not be declared as an educationally and socially backward community to bring them within the reserved category.

Indra Sawney case or Mandal Commission case:

• In the Indra Sawney case or Mandal Commission case of 1992 verdict capped the quota for reservation at 50 per cent.

5. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar virtually participates in G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting

• External Affairs Minister Dr Jaishankar participated in the G-7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting through video conference. India has been invited as a guest to the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
• During the meeting, it was discussed that vaccination is the only lasting solution to the COVID-19 challenge.

G7

• G7 is an intergovernmental organisation of industrialised democracies that was formed in 1975. It includes USA, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy and UK. The group meets annually to discuss the areas of common interest.
• It became G8 after Russia joined the team in 1997. However, Russia was removed after it captured Crimea in 2014.

• ஸ்பேஸ்எக்ஸ்–இன் ஃபால்கன் 9, 60 ஸ்டார்லிங்க் செயற்கைக்கோள்களை சுற்றுப்பாதையில் செலுத்தியுள்ளது. இது ஸ்டார்லிங்க் திட்டத்தின் மூலம் அதிவேக இணையத்தை வழங்குவதை நோக்கமாகக் கொண்டுள்ளது.

7. ADR report shows that the new legislative assembly of Tamil Nadu will have more MLAs facing criminal cases

• Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) analysis shows the age-group, wealth, education and background of criminal cases among the new MLAs of Tamil Nadu.

Background of criminal cases among the new MLAs:

• According to the analysis, 34% of the elected MLAs were facing criminal cases in 2016 and it increased to 60% in 2021. 134 MLAs elected in 2021 faced criminal cases, of whom 57 had criminal cases for offences of a serious nature. ADR’s analysis included only 224 of the 234 MLAs due to lack of availability of proper data.

Wealth:

• More than 85% of the new MLAs are crorepathis compared to the 76% in 2016. The analysis showed that the average worth of assets of MLAs increased by nearly 50% from Rs. 8.21 crores in 2016 to Rs. 12.27 crores in 2021.

Education:

• More than 60% of the newly elected MLAs had atleast completed diploma or degree. This election also saw a marginally higher number of graduates entering the Assembly, compared to 2016.

Age-group:

Around 65% of the elected candidates were aged 60 or above and only 6% were below 40.

புதிய எம்.எல்.ஏ.க்கள் மத்தியில் குற்ற வழக்குகளின் பின்னணி:

கல்வி:

8. S&P reduced India’s GDP growth forecast to 9.8% for FY22

• S&P Global Ratings reduced India’s GDP growth forecast for the current financial year to 8 per cent due to second wave of COVID-19.
• The rating was earlier pegged at 11% on account of a fast economic reopening and fiscal stimulus. Lower consumption will mean less hiring, lower wages, and a second hit to consumption.

• Professor P. Nagabhushanam, the first Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Law University, died in Chennai at the age of 78 due to COVID-19. The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University was established in 1997. Professor P. Nagabhushanam was appointed as the first Vice Chancellor and held the post till 2000

• தமிழ்நாடு சட்டப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் முதல் துணைவேந்தரான பேராசிரியை பி. நாகபூஷணம் கோவிட்-19 பாதிப்பால் தனது 78 வயதில் சென்னையில் காலமானார்.

• Former Union Minister Chaudhary Ajit Singh dies at the age of 82 due to COVID-19. He was the Chief of Rashtriya Lok Dal. Chaudhary Ajit Singh is the son of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh.

11. முன்னாள் மத்திய அமைச்சர் சவுத்ரி அஜித் சிங் தனது 82வது வயதில் மரணமடைந்தார்

• முன்னாள் மத்திய அமைச்சர் சவுத்ரி அஜித் சிங் கோவிட்-19 காரணமாக தனது 82 வது வயதில் காலமானார். அவர் ராஷ்ட்ரிய லோக் தளத்தின் தலைவராக இருந்தார். சவுத்ரி அஜித் சிங் முன்னாள் பிரதமர் சவுத்ரி சரண் சிங்கின் மகன் ஆவார்.

12. International No Diet Day – 6 May

• International No Diet Day is celebrated annually on 6 May to commemorate the importance of body acceptance and diversity, irrespective of types and size.
• It is also a day to raise awareness about various dieting disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.
• International No Diet Day was initiated by Mary Evans Young, who is the director of the British anti-diet movement ‘Diet Breakers’ in 1992.
