NATIONAL

  • The Commerce Secretary Rita Teaotia chaired the first meeting of the task force on e-commerce in New Delhi.The task force has been set up to recommend a framework for comprehensive national policy on e-commerce.

  • In an aim of eliminating all unmanned Level Crossing Gates over Sambalpur Division, East Coast Railway launches highest ever 6 (six) Limited Height Subways (LHS) in Sambalpur Division and completed it in a single block of four and half hours. Sambalpur is located in the western part of Odisha.

  • The Indian Satyarup Siddhanta has become the second Indian mountaineer after Malli Mastan Babu to climb Mt Ojos del Salado, the highest volcano in the world.

  • The BSNL announces to launch its first Internet telephony service Wings. It will be launched from August 2018.

  • The State-run Airports Authority of India (AAI) will set up a Civil Aviation Research Organisation (CARO) aimed at “finding indigenous solutions” to meet the challenges posed by the growing air traffic.

  • India’s latest frontline warship INS Trikand has reached Sri Lanka in a goodwill visit. The Sri Lanka Navy ceremonially welcomed the state-of-the-art warship in accordance with naval traditions

  • Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who is presently in Israel on a six-day visit, announced that the state government will issue a notification, according minority status to Jews in Gujarat.

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved USD 503-million lining project of the Son canal in Shahabad-Bhojpur region of Bihar which would benefit the agriculture sector immensely in the region, the power ministry said today.

  • Government said over 51 lakh houses have been approved under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) in the three years of its implementation.

  • As part of the technology sub-mission of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna- Urban (PMAY-U), the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) plans on launching the Global Housing Construction Technology Challenge that aims at accelerating PMAY-U target for providing housing for all.

  • In order to secure government data and control access to sensitive information on the internet, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will be upgrading the National Information Security Policy and Guidelines (NISPG). For the protection of the ‘information’ in Cyberspace, MHA will be designated as the lead agency.

  • The two-day 65th Plenary meeting of North Eastern Council (NEC) will begin in Shillong, Meghalaya.

  • China said it has clinched a deal with India on the reduction of import duties on Indian medicines including anti-cancer drugs, which are highly expensive in the country.Beijing had a cut on import duties on over 8,500 Indian items, said it will relax taxes on more goods from India and other countries as its trade war with the US heats up.

  • The 6th edition of the biennial World Cities Summit, the leading global platform to drive and connect innovators in sustainable integrated urban solutions, kicked off in Singapore.

  • China successfully launched two remote sensing satellites for Pakistan, marking the first international commercial launch for the Long March-2C rocket in about 19 years.

  • The satellites – PRSS-1 and PakTES-1A were launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China.

  • The central government think tank NITI Aayog has unveiled the blueprint of National Health Stack (NHS), a shared digital healthcare infrastructure.

  • The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has organised a International Round Table Conference on ‘Data for New India’ in New Delhi.

  • The Indian Railways has introduced a commercial service to run double-stack dwarf containers on trains to capture the lost traffic through new delivery model for domestic cargo.

  • For the first time,Rajya Sabha has has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a foreign counterpart for promoting inter-parliamentary dialogue.

  • Microsoft has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rajasthan government to provide free digital training to 9,500 college students in one year.

  • India’s first private sector unit for manufacturing unmanned air vehicles (UAV) and light bullet proof vehicles (LBPV) will be set up by DCM Shriram Industries Group on the campus of Shriram Rayons in Kota, Rajasthan.

  • The Department of Telecom (DoT) gave its nod to the Vodafone India-Idea Cellular deal to form the biggest telecom entity in India.

  • According to a study on ‘world leaders on social media’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the third most followed world leader on Twitter with 42 million followers on his personal account @NarendraModi.

  • The HRD ministry has awarded Institution of Eminence (IoE) status to six educational institutions. With IIT-Delhi, IIT-Bombay, BITS-Pilani, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Manipal Academy of Higher Education, there is the Reliance Foundation’s proposed Jio Institute.

  • Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has given in-principle approval for the 39-crore rupees ‘Seema Darshan’ project.

  • The Global Innovation Index (GII) has ranked India as the 57th most innovative nation in the world.

  • Andhra Pradesh has topped the government’s ease of doing business index, ahead of the industrialised states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

  • The Western Ghats has figured in Lonely Planet’s top five “2018 Best in Asia” list, a collection of 10 of the best destinations to visit in the continent for the year.

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched national campaign ‘The Eat Right Movement’.It aims to improve public health and combat lifestyle diseases. FSSAI also launched Eat Right tool kit and Safe and Nutritious Food at Workplace campaign.

  • The Uttar Pradesh Government has granted Status of Revenue Village to three villages inhabited by the Tongia Scheduled Tribe in and around forests in Saharanpur district.

  • The Railways has launched its first consolidated Bridge Management System (IR-BMS), a web-enabled IT application to store data on its one lakh 50 thousand bridges. The Railways Minister Piyush Goyal launched the service in New Delhi.

  • In order to reduce electricity losses, the Maharashtra government will next month launch a new scheme allocating one transformer per farmer. It was announced by Energy Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule.The scheme, “one farmer one transformer”, will be unveiled on August 15.

  • The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has launched a ‘Technology Challenge.The main aim of the challenge is to eliminate human intervention in the cleaning of sewers and septic tanks.

  • The Andhra Pradesh government has launched its own ‘Anna’ canteens across the state.As many as 60 ‘Anna’ canteens were opened across Andhra Pradesh in the first phase of the launch. The Akshay Patra Foundation will run these canteens.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new headquarters building of the Archaeological Survey of India in New Delhi.

  • The Telecom  Commission has approved net neutrality rules which bar service providers from discriminating against Internet content and services by blocking, throttling or granting them higher speed access.

  • The Centre has launched the Swachh Survekshan Grameen, 2018, a nationwide survey of rural India to rank the cleanest and dirtiest States and districts on the basis of qualitative and quantitative evaluation.

  • Shivraj Singh Chauhan dedicated the state-run power giant NTPC’s 250 MW Solar Power Plant in Suwasra, District Mandsaur to the state.This project has been set up by NTPC at an investment of about Rs 1,500 crore.

  • The government has set up a high-level task force under the chairmanship of Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha to identify various items and policy interventions to reduce dependence on import.

  • Michael Ondaatje’s ‘The English Patient’ was named the greatest-ever winner of the Man Booker Prize at an event celebrating five decades of the prestigious literary award.

  • The Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar will inaugurate the 17th World Sanskrit Conference to be held at Vancouver, Canada.

  • The Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged a package of US$20 billion in loans, and about $106 million in financial aid, to Middle East nations.It is given as part of “oil and gas-plus” model to spur economic growth in the region.

  • India and South Korea have signed five MoUs in the field of Science and Technology in New Delhi.

  • India and the United Kingdom signed an agreement on exchange of experience by legal professionals and government functionaries for resolution of disputes before various courts and tribunals.

  • Toray Industries (India), a subsidiary of Toray Industries, Inc, a Japanese major producing key materials for a range of industries, plans to invest ₹1,000 crore in setting up a manufacturing unit in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.

  • Scientists have discovered the oldest colours in the geological record — 1.1 billion-year-old bright pink pigments extracted from rocks deep beneath the Sahara desert in Africa.

  • Essar Vizag Terminal Ltd (EVTL) has commissioned its iron ore handling complex in Visakhapatnam, deemed to be India’s largest, built with an investment of Rs 830 crore.

  • The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has constituted a High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation.


BANKING AND ECONOMY

  • Reliance is India’s largest payer of Goods and Services Tax (GST), Excise and Customs Duty, and Income Tax in the private sector. The private sector is paying Rs.9844 crore in FY18.

  • The ICICI Bank, India’s largest private sector bank by consolidated assets has announced its partnership with ‘Westpac Banking Corporation’ (Westpac), one of the top banks in Australia.

  • India has surpassed France to become the sixth largest economy in the world.

  • The RBI has announced that the licence of Alwar Urban Co-operative Bank in Alwar, Rajasthan has been cancelled as it is not in a position to pay its depositors in full as and when their claims accrue, among other reasons.

  • India was formally announced as the 69th shareholder of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

  • The Bank of Baroda has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with KB Financial Group Inc. (KBFG), Korea, for a comprehensive business cooperation to establish In-Ko financing corridor and develop innovative digital payment ecosystem.

  • The Indian Army has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Bank of India on defence salary package. This MoU will benefit a large number of serving and retired Army personnel who are having their accounts with SBI.

  • HDFC securities has announced launch of Mutual Funds transactional capabilities on Facebook Messenger through their virtual assistant, Arya.A subsidiary of HDFC Bank, HDFC securities framed a theme called “The Pace of Innovation”.

  • Airtel Payments Bank has received requisite approvals from the Reserve Bank to begin taking new customers.

  • The Forbes has released its fourth annual list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women. These 60 women, who have a record combined net worth of $71 billion, up 15% from $61.5 billion in 2017.

  • The Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has bagged a prestigious project for the engineering, procurement and construction of Head of Department (HoD) office buildings at Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh.

  • Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries has broken three records in the past two days.
