World Day of Social Justice – 20 February

  • World Day of Social Justice is observed globally on 20 February to raise a voice against social injustice and to bring the various communities together internationally to eliminate poverty, gender and physical discrimination, illiteracy and religious discrimination to make a socially integrated society.
  • On 26 November 2007, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared that 20 February will be celebrated annually as ‘World Day of Social Justice’.
  • The theme for World Day of Social Justice 2022 is ‘Achieving social justice through formal employment’.

International Mother Language Day – 21 February

  • International Mother Language Day is celebrated annually on 21 February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism (the ability to speak multiple languages or the use of multiple languages).
  • This day was first announced by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on 17 November 1999 and was formally recognised by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2002.
  • The theme for International Mother Language Day 2022 is ‘Using technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and opportunities’.

Union Steel Minister Ram Charan Prasad Singh lays the foundation stone for the coke oven plant in Mangaluru, Karnataka

  • The Union Minister of Steel Ram Chandra Prasad Singh laid the foundation stone for coke oven plant in Mangaluru, Karnataka.
  • This project is planned at a total cost of ₹ 836.90 crores and would take 24 months to be complete. It also includes the setting up of 0 litre tonnes per annum ductile iron spun plant.

  • Madhya Pradesh Government also announced that the Global Skill Park in the name of Guru Ravidas is set to be built in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

  • India’s first biosafety level-3 containment mobile laboratory was launched in Nashik, Maharashtra. This mobile laboratory was set up to investigate newly emerging and re-emerging viral infections that are highly infectious and of lethal potential to human beings.
  • This mobile laboratory provides a public health solution as it can be simply driven around to various locations, just like a normal bus.

Union Government approves the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan till 31 March 2026

  • The Union Government has approved the continuation of the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) scheme till 31 March 2026. The Union Government has envisaged supporting around 1,600 projects under the new phase of this scheme.
  • The expenditure of this scheme will be ₹ 12,929.16 crores, of which the central share will be ₹ 8,120.97 crores and the state share will be ₹ 4,808.19 crores.
  • RUSA is a centrally sponsored scheme for funding state government universities and colleges to achieve equity, access and excellence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates Drone manufacturing facilities of Garuda Aerospace

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has virtually inaugurated the drone manufacturing facilities of Garuda Aerospace at Gurugram, Haryana and Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
  • The 100 drones commenced agriculture spraying operations in 16 states to celebrate 75 years of Indian Independence as part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations.
  • The Chennai-based Garuda Aerospace is a drone-as-a-service (DAAS) company.

India flags off its first-ever shipment of steel from Haldia to Pandu through Bangladesh

  • Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and AYUSH Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off the maiden voyage of barges with a consignment of 1798 MT of finished steel products of Tata Steel Limited from Haldia (West Bengal) to Pandu (in Assam) through the Indo–Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBP Route).
  • This maiden voyage showcases the multimodal movement of cargo along with the harnessing of the power of the river-sea combination.

The Aardvark born in Chester Zoo for the first time in 90 years was named ‘Dobby’

  • An aardvark was born in Chester Zoo in the United Kingdom for the first time in 90 years. It has been named after ‘Dobby’, the house-elf in the Harry Potter series, for its close resemblance to the character. The calf was born with large droopy ears, hairless, wrinkled skin and giant claws.

Manika Batra was appointed as the brand ambassador of Adidas

  • Sportswear company Adidas has roped in Indian table tennis player Manika Batra as its brand ambassador.
  • She joins Adidas’s roster of Indian women athletes, consisting of names such as Mirabai Chanu, Lovlina Borgohain, Hima Das, Nikhat Zareen, among others.

IOC Athletes’ Commission has re-elected Emmo Terho as its Chair

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has re-elected Finland’s ice hockey player Emma Terho as its Chair. Athletes’ Commission (AC) has elected the Republic of Korea’s table tennis player Seung Min Ryu as its first Vice-Chair.
  • The Commission also elected New Zealand’s cyclist Sarah Walker as second Vice-Chair of the Commission.

Chetan Ghate was appointed as the Director of the Institute of Economic Growth

  • The Institute of Economic Growth has appointed Chetan Ghate as its new Director. He succeeded Ajit Mishra.
  • Chetan Ghate was a member of the Reserve Bank of India’s first Monetary Policy Committee between 2016–2020. He was the winner of the 2014 Mahalanobis Memorial gold medal for the best research economist in India under the age of 45.

Takuya Tsumura was appointed as the new President and CEO of Honda Cars India

  • Japanese auto major Honda Motor Co. Ltd. has announced the appointment of Takuya Tsumura as the new President and CEO of Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL).
  • He succeeded Gaku Nakanishi, who will move from India to the regional headquarters in the Asia and Oceania region.

  • Union Minister of Coal Pralhad Joshi has complimented Coal India Limited (CIL) under the Union Ministry of Coal for getting the ‘Most Dependable Public Sector in India’
  • This award was conferred on CIL by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASSCHOM).

Bill Gates was honoured with the second highest civilian honour of Pakistan ‘Hilal-e-Pakistan’

  • Pakistan President Arif Alvi conferred the honour of ‘Hilal-e-Pakistan’, Pakistan’s second-highest civilian award, to Bill Gates for his efforts to help eradicate polio.
  • Microsoft Corporation co-founder turned philanthropist Bill Gates visited Pakistan, meeting with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan and stated that polio eradication could be possible in coming years in one of the last two countries of the world where the virus is endemic.

India is set to host the International Olympic Committee session in 2023 after 40 years

  • India won the right to host the 2023 International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) session in Mumbai, Maharashtra, in an unopposed race, during the 139th IOC session held in Beijing, China.
  • The Indian delegation comprising India’s first individual Olympic gold medallist (Beijing 2008, shooting) Abhinav Bindra, IOC member Nita Ambani, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Narinder Batra and Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur made the presentation to IOC members during the 139th IOC session, being held alongside the ongoing Winter Olympics in Beijing, China.

India becomes the number one team in the  ICC Men’s T20I Rankings for the first time in six years

  • India became the number one side in the ICC Men’s T20I Rankings for the first time in six years after its 3-0 series win over West Indies in Kolkata, West Bengal.
  • India surpassed England, which had 269 rating points to take the top spot. India previously held the reigns over the format under Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s leadership from 12 February 2016 to 03 May 2016.

Bihar batter Sakibul Gani scripts world record with a triple hundred on first-class debut in Ranji Trophy 2022

  • Twenty-two-year-old Bihar batter Sakibul Gani created a new world record for the highest score by a batter on debut in first-class cricket. He scored 341 runs for Bihar against Mizoram in their group opening match of Ranji Trophy 2022 at the Jadavpur University Campus, Kolkata.
  • He broke the record held by another Indian — Ajay Rohera of Madhya Pradesh. Ajay Rohera had scored 267 in his first-class debut against Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy 2018–19 campaign.
