Former RBI Governor Bimal Jalan To Head Panel To Select New CEA

The government has appointed a panel under former Reserve Bank of India governor Bimal Jalan to select the next chief economic adviser in the finance ministry.

The secretary of the department of personnel and training C Chandramouli and economic affairs secretary Subhash Chandra Garg will be members of the panel. The maximum age limit for the position has been fixed at 56 years.

Arvind Subramanian has resigned from his CEA post before his tenure ends in May 2019 citing personal reasons. He has since joined as a visiting professor at Harvard University.


HRD Minister Inaugurates 4th World Summit on Accreditation

The Union Minister for HRD Shri Prakash Javadekar has inaugurated the 4th World Summit on Accreditation (WOSA-2018) at New Delhi.

The theme this year is – Challenges and Opportunities in Outcome-Based Accreditation.

The Summit is a biennial event organized by the National Board of Accreditation which provides platform to its stakeholders to share their knowledge and information on accreditation.

The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) is an autonomous organisation under Ministry of Human Resource Development engaged in quality assurance of the programs offered by the professional and technical institutions in India through accreditation.


Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana to cover child cancer treatment

The government has announced that treatment of childhood cancer will be covered under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.

The scheme will provide health insurance cover of five lakh rupees to poor families. Both BPL and lower-middle-class families will benefit from it.

Nearly 1.5 lakh Health and Wellness Centres will be opened in the country by 2022 under Ayushman Bharat.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana or Ayushman Bharat scheme will be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the birth anniversary of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay on September 25, 2018.


PM Narendra Modi to launch Swachhata hi Seva Campaign

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch ‘Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS)’, a jan andolan for swachhata (cleanliness) on September 15 in the run-up to the 4th anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM).

The SHS aims at accelerating the Jan-Andolan for realizing the vision of a Clean India, further reinforcing the belief that ‘Sanitation is everyone’s business’.

It will be followed by launch of Shramdaan activities with huge community mobilisation by following grassroots swachhata champions such as women sarpanches, Swachhagrahi , students, nigrani samitis etc.,

Also, mass awareness campaign on cleanliness for passengers traveling aboard railways will be carried out. Cleaning of Iconic Places with focus on the 30 swachh iconic places for cleanliness activities will be conducted.


Yudh Abhyas 2018: India, US annual combat exercise to be held Chaubatia in Uttarakhand

India and the US plans to hold their annual “Yudh Abhyas” combat exercise between their armies at Chaubatia in Uttarakhand from September 16 to 29.

Yudh Abhyas will see around 350 soldiers from each side this year, increasing the participation from around 200 each earlier.

Last year, Yudh Abhyas was held at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in the U.S.

India and the US have also decided to hold their first-ever mega tri-Service amphibious exercise off the eastern coast of India next year.


Ayushman Bharat Call Centre Inaugurated In Bengaluru

This national call centre is operational since  August 25.

The call centre functioning 24×7 in collaboration with Medi assistant is sharing infn in English and Hindi initially and 9 more regional languages to be added later.

Ayushman Bharat Yojana or National Health Protection Scheme is a program which aims to provide a service to create a healthy, capable and content new India.

G20 Education Ministers’ and Joint Ministerial Meeting held in Mendoza, Argentina

The Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Dr. Satya Pal Singh lead a high level delegation to the G-20 Education Ministers’ Meeting as well as Joint Ministerial Meeting held at Mendoza, Argentina. It was the first ever meeting of Education Ministers in the history of G-20.

With active help of India, G20 Education Ministers’ Declaration 2018 was finalized.

G20 is an international forum for the governments and central bank governors from 19-member states and European Union.

Temasek to invest up to $400 mn in NIIF

The National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) has announced that Singapore-based Temasek has agreed to invest up to USD 400 million (around Rs 2,750 crore), which may include future potential co-investments with NIIF.

As part of the agreement, Temasek will join the government, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), HDFC group, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance and Axis Bank as an investor in NIIF’s Master Fund and as a shareholder in National Investment and Infrastructure.

Axis Bank Appoints HDFC’s Amitabh Chaudhry as MD & CEO

Amitabh Chaudhry has been appointed as its managing director & CEO from January 1, 2019, for a period of three years.

Mr. Chaudhry is the MD & CEO of HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company at present. He replaces Shikha Sharma as she steps down on December 31, 2018.

Alibaba chairman Jack Ma to step down

Jack Ma, the charismatic co-founder of China’s largest e-commerce firm Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, will step down as chairman in exactly one year on Sept. 10, 2019.

Current Alibaba Chief Executive Daniel Zhang will replace him as chairman, while Ma will complete his current term on Alibaba’s board of directors.

‘Sarala Puraskar’ For Poet Satrughna Pandav

The noted Odia poet Satrughna Pandav will receive the prestigious Sarala Puraskar for his poetry work ‘Misra Dhrupad.’

The 39th edition of Sarala Puraskar – instituted by eminent Odia industrialist Late Dr. Bansidhar Panda and Late Ila Panda in the year 1979 and continuously awarded by Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT) – will be presented to Pandav on October 26.

Pandav will receive a cash award of Rs 5 lakh along with a citation, a release from IMPaCT, the charitable wing of leading ferro alloys producer IMFA Group.

Pandeet Umesh Chadra Kar will be awarded with the ‘Ila Panda Sangeet Samman’ and Binod Moharana will receive ‘Ila Panda Chitrakala Samman’ for their contribution to the fields of music and art. They will receive a cash award of Rs 1.50 lakh each along with citations.


Aishwarya Rai Bachchan gets honoured with the Meryl Streep Award

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been honoured at the Women in Film and Television (WIFT) India Awards. The award has been established to honour the best female talent in Bollywood and Hollywood.

Apart from the actor, director Zoya Akhtar and “Dhadak” star Janhvi Kapoor, among others, were also honoured at the event.

Tennis: U.S Open Winners

Women’s Single: Japan’s Naomi Osaka clinched the U.S open title in the Women’s Singles Category for the first time.

She defeated top seeded Serena Williams to get the title. Osaka, 20, won the match 6-2 6-4 to become the first Japanese Grand Slam champion.

Serena Williams was fined $17,000 (£13,100) for the code violations.

Men’s Single: Novak Djokovic defeats Juan Martin del Potro to win US Open 2018 for the third time and claim 14th grand-slam title.

Djokovic, who won Wimbledon in July, will climb to third in the world after back-to-back Grand Slam victories. He now equals Pete Sampras’ career total.

Argentine third seed Del Potro, 29, was playing his first Grand Slam final since winning the 2009 US Open.


Arpinder got IAAF Continental Cup athletics bronze

The Asian Games champion Arpinder Singh won the bronze in the men’s triple jump in the IAAF Continental Cup athletics at Ostrava, Czech Republic.

American Christian Taylor, the Olympic and World champion, won the gold with a 17.59m opening effort while Burkina Faso’s Hughes Fabrice Zango won the silver with 17.02 while Arpinder’s first round 16.59 got him the bronze.


Ankur Mittal Wins Double Trap Gold in ISSF World Championship

Ankur Mittal claimed the men’s double trap gold medal in the ISSF World Championship.

China’s Yiyang Yang won silver with an identical score. Slovakia’s Hubert Andrzej Olejnik won bronze.

Mittal is only the second Indian after Manavjit Singh Sandhu to win gold in a shotgun event at the Worlds. He’s the fifth Indian overall to win gold at the worlds after Abhinav Bindra, Sandhu, Tejaswini Sawant and Om Mitharval.

The Indian team of Mittal, Mohd Asab and Shardul Vihan also won bronze in the team event with a score of 409.
