Important Days
26 January- Republic Day
- India marked its 71st Republic Day on Sunday with a parade showcasing some of its newly acquired indigenous capabilities such as the anti-satellite missile, as well as US-made Chinook heavy-lift and Apache attack helicopters.
- Indian Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution the supreme law of the land and replaced the Government of India Act 1935.
- It came into effect on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system. This day marks with the largest parade took place at Rajpath, Delhi.
- NOTE: Governors will hoist the FLAGS in the State Capital.
International Customs Day
- The International Customs Day (ICD) on 26 January 2020 will be dedicated to the contribution of Customs towards a sustainable future where social, economic, health and environmental needs are at the heart of our actions, with the slogan “Customs fostering Sustainability for People, Prosperity and the Planet”.
International Day of Commemoration
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is an international Memorial Day on 27 January commemorating the tragedy of the Holocaust that occurred during the Second World War
the theme for Holocaust education and remembrance in 2020, “75 years after Auschwitz – Holocaust Education and Remembrance for Global Justice”.
Government announces 141 Padma Awards for this year on occasion of 71st Republic Day
- The government has announced 141 Padma Awards for this year on the occasion of 71st Republic Day. The list comprises of 7 Padma Vibhushan, 16 Padma Bhusan and 118 Padma Shri awards.
- 34 awardees are women and 18 foreigners.
- 12 persons are awarded posthumously.
- Former Union Ministers George Fernandes, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley will be awarded Padma Vibhushan.
- Former Chief Minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar and Legal luminary and educator NR Madhava Menon to be conferred Padma Bhushan posthumously. Eminent Writer Manoj Das, Shuttler PV Sindhu, industrialist Anand Mahindra will get Padma Bhushan.
- Footballer Oinem Bembem Devi, Film Director Karan Johar, Actress Kangna Ranaut will get Padma Shri.
- Several unsung heroes like Jagdish Lal Ahuja, Javed Ahmad Tak, Tulasi Gowda, Mohammed Sharif, Satyanayana Mundayoor, S Ramakrishna and Yogi Aeron have been selected for Padma Shri.
Bharat Parv 2020′ begins at Red Fort to celebrate spirit of India
- Bharat Parv 2020, a festival to celebrate the spirit of India has begun at Red Fort ground in New Delhi. It will continue till 31st of this month.
- The objective of Bharat Parv is to encourage people to visit different tourism places of the country and to inculcate the spirit of ‘Dekho Apna Desh’.
- More than 50 food stalls, 79 handicrafts stalls and 27 theme pavilions have been setup. The theme of this year’s Bharat Parv is ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ and ‘Celebrating 150 Years of Mahatma Gandhi.
2-day ‘Innovation Festival’ begins at Science Centre in Itanagar
- Arunachal Pradesh, the two-day ‘Innovation Festival’ kicked off at the Science Centre in on Saturday.
- The festival is being organized by the Arunachal Pradesh State Council for Science & Technology in collaboration with the National Innovation Foundation.
- More than 50 innovations are put on display by students from various educational institutions, grassroots innovators, artisans and entrepreneurs from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and other states.
National Integration Camp highlighting ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat’ scheme begins in Madurai, Tamil Nadu
- Five-day National Integration Camp, highlighting the Central Government’s ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat’ scheme has begun in Madurai, the Cultural Capital of Tamil Nadu.
- Rural artists from more than 16 States and Union Territories are attending the camp, during which they will be showcasing their unique talents as well as getting acquainted with art forms from other parts of the country.
- Orientation trips to nearby places of cultural importance and afforestation programmes are also being arranged as part of the camp.
- Cultural links between and its ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat’ partner Jammu Kashmir – Ladakh are also being highlighted in the camp activities.
Ganga Yatra under Namami Gange mission to begin from Bijnor, Ballia in Uttar Pradesh
- Five-day Ganga Yatra under Namami Gange mission will kick off today from Bijnor and Ballia in Uttar Pradesh.
- UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat and Union Minister Sanjeev Baliyan will launch the yatra from Bijnor, a place where Ganga enters Uttar Pradesh.
- Governor Anandiben Patel, Union Minister Mahendra Nath Pandey and Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Sushil Modi will launch it from Ballia in eastern UP, where the holy river leave the state to enter Bihar.
First-ever carnival of peace and harmony held in Shillong
- Shillong witnessed the 1st-ever carnival of peace & harmony as part of the weeklong Meghalaya Day Celebrations. Carnival procession passed through the busy streets of Shillong city showcasing different ethnic communities of the State & neighbouring areas.

World’s largest meditation centre coming up in Hyderabad
- The world’s largest meditation centre and the global headquarters of the Heartfulness Institute will be inaugurated on January 28.
- To mark the 75th anniversary of the organisation, Kanha Shanti Vanam- spread over 30 acres-will be dedicated to Lalaji.
- It can accommodate 100,000 practitioners at one go.

- Aunties, uncles & tube lights have made it to the latest edition of Oxford dictionary, with 26 new Indian English words being added to a total of 384 existing ones.
- 10th edition of the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary come with an Indian English label.
- Oxford Dictionaries Hindi Word of the Year for 2018-Nari Shakti.
Qatar signs $470 Million solar deal
- Gas-rich Qatar signed a $470-million deal to build its first solar energy plant, capable of meeting up to one-tenth of peak national power demand.
- The Al-Kharsaah plant near Doha is a 10-square-kilometre joint venture with French and Japanese partners.
- Production capacity will be around 800 MW and 10%of peak demand.
China now world’s second biggest weapons producer: SIPRI
- China Ranked World’s Second Largest Arms Producer Trailing Behind US.
- Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has hinted on China being world’s second largest producer of munitions.
- The report notes however that the lack of transparency remains an “important caveat” when studying the Chinese arms industry.
13th edition of International Children’s Film Festival of Bangladesh inaugurated
The 13th edition of the International Children’s Film Festival of Bangladesh was inaugurated in Dhaka.
The festival is one of the biggest film events in Bangladesh.
It is the only international film festival for children and young adults of the country.
Theme of this year’s festival is ‘Under the World’.
India & WB signed $210 million loan pact for Maharashtra’s Agri & Rural Transformation Project
- Govt of Maharashtra and the World Bank(WB) signed a loan agreement of $210 million for Maharashtra’s Agribusiness & rural transformation project.
- This project will help the farmers in Maharashtra to take part in competitive agriculture value chains, enhance agribusiness investments thereby increasing productivity of commodities.

Ganga-Volga Dialogue held with Russia to enhance Connectivity
- The Ganga-Volga Dialogue was held between India and Russia in New Delhi.
- The dialogue focused in providing interface between the civilizations of the countries.
- Highlights The dialogue prioritized people-to-people contact.
- According to Russia, the dialogue acted as a good platform for its policy of “Greater Eurasia”. The Dialogue was held on the following theme Theme: Connectivity The Dialogue also focused on Digital Connectivity, culture, tourism, healthcare, manufacturing technology, economy, entrepreneurship, etc.
- The aim of the dialogue is very similar to the International North-South Transport Corridor.

RBI raises investment limit for FPIs in debt
- According to the current norms, short-term investments by a foreign portfolio investor (FPI) should not exceed 20 per cent of the total investment of that FPI in either central government securities (including treasury bills) or state development loans.
- Short-term investment limit has now increased from 20% to 30%.

Graphic designer Sneha pamneja wins Oxford Bookstore Book Cover Prize 2020 for ‘Tiffin’ at 13th Jaipur Literature Festival
- Sneha Pamneja, a wellknown Graphic designer based in New Delhi, was awarded Oxford Bookstore Book Cover Prize 2020, a 1st of its kind award for brilliance in book design, at Jaipur Book Mark of ongoing 13th edition of the Zee Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
- She was honoured for designing the cover of the book ‘Tiffin: Authentic Recipes Celebrating India’s Regional Cuisine’.
- Pamneja was awarded a trophy and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh for designing an attractive cover. The award was presented to her by the jury comprising Jurors Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Namita Gokhale and Shobhaa De.
- Penned by Sonal Ved & published by Roli books, the book Tiffin’s cover attracts the theme and essence of the book attractively.
Journalist & Hindu group chairman N Ram honoured with Kerala’s national media award
- Popular journalist and Chairman of the Hindu Group of Publications Shri N Ram was honoured by Kerala Media Academy’s National media award as part of its 40th anniversary of formation.
- He was awarded for his outstanding contribution to journalism. The award carried a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a citation and a memento.
- Award presentation: The award will be presented by the chief minister of Kerala Shri Pinarayi Vijayan by the end of March 2020.

- N Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, has been conferred ‘Harit Ratna Award 2019’ by the All India Agricultural Students Association for dissemination of Rs 30 Crore entrepreneurship project in agri-business.

Kobe Bryant, daughter Gianna among 9 killed in helicopter crash in California
- Kobe Bryant, 41-year-old National Basketball Association (NBA) legend and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna died yesterday in a helicopter crash in the city of Calabasas, California.
- He played his entire 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He retired in April 2016. He was twice the NBA scoring champion and a two-time Olympic champion.
Robbie Rensenbrink dies at 72
- Robbie Rensenbrink, who famously came within a goalpost’s width of winning the 1978 World Cup for the Netherlands, has died at the age of 72, former teammate Jan Mulder told the Belga news agency.
- Rensenbrink, who had been fighting progressive muscular atrophy for a number of years, played in the famous Dutch team which lost the 1974 World Cup final 2-1 to West Germany and the 1978 decider against Argentina four years later.
Eminent artist and sculptor Sher Singh Kukkal dies at 86
- On January 25, 2020, Sher Singh Kukkal, an eminent artist & sculptor, has passed away in New Delhi after a brief illness.He was 86.
- Kukkal, a former art teacher at Sainik School Satara in Maharashtra, has received several awards.
- Kukkal, a man of with a rich experience in fine arts, was a resident of Buffa district, now in Pakistan. He worked as an independent artist, painting, making sculptures and also photography.

- The Forum of the Election Management Bodies of South Asia (FEMBoSA) has got a new chairman- Sunil Arora for the year 2020.
- The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, Sunil Arora took over as the chairman from KM Nurul Huda who is the present Chief Election Commissioner of Bangladesh.

India’s Federation Cup games moved from virus-hit China to Kazakhstan
- Indian Federation Cup team today heaved a sigh of relief after the International Tennis Federation (ITF) shifted the Federation Cup matches from the Coronavirus-hit China to Kazakhstan.
- Concerned for its players’ health due to a medical emergency in China, the All India Tennis Association (AITA) had written to the ITF, requesting the world governing body to consider either shifting the venue or postponing the tournament. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in Dongguan from 4th of next month.
Tennis player Joao Souza of Brazil banned for life due to match-fixing
- Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU), which is responsible for investigating match fixing in tennis, Joao Olavo Soares de Souza (31), a former Brazilian professional tennis player has been banned for life due to match fixing and corruption.
- It also fined Souza with $200,000.
World Archery lifts suspension on India
- The World Archery has lifted the suspension on India and hence allowed the Indian Archers to represent India in the upcoming International tournaments.
- The world body has advised the Archery Association of India to comply with the rules set up by the World Archery constitution to ensure the good governance in the sport.
