Odisha To Get Country’s 1st Skill Training Centre

The Central government is planning to set up one National Skill Training Institute (NSTI) in every State to meet the rising demand for skilled manpower in the country.

Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan laid the foundation stone of country’s first such skill training institute at Barang near Bhubaneswar.

The Institute costing Rs 160 crore will come up over five acres of land and have state-of-the-art facilities.

NSTI will supplement training activities and build on demographic advantages of Odisha for growth and development.

New Committee set up to Synergise NCC and NSS

The government has decided to form a committee under former education secretary Anil Swarup. It has been framed to address issues such as “manpower deficiency” in the NCC and NSS.

The committee will also have “suitable representations” from NCC (National Cadet Corps) and the Ministry of Human Resource and Development.

The Committee will deal with issues like expansion, strengthening training infrastructure, rationalising resources, reducing manpower deficiency affecting NCC and NSS (National Service Scheme).

The Committee will also submit recommendations for building “synergy” between these two institutions.


INTERNATIONAL

SCO Organises “Peace Mission” in August 2018

The Militaries of India and Pakistan will be part of a mega anti-terror drill in Russia in August which is being organised by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The drill, “Peace Mission”, will take place nearly three months.

It will be conducted in an aim to expand cooperation among the member countries to deal with terrorism and extremism.

Around 200 Army and Air Force personnel from India will be participating in the exercise at Chelyabinsk city in west-central Russia.

The exercise will be joined by all SCO member countries including Russia, China, Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

University of Houston Signs MoU with Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy

The University of Houston has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE) to build scientific and technical knowledge through joint research.

The agreement was signed at Houston by IIPE founding director VSRK Prasad and UH vice provost for global strategies and studies, Jaime Ortiz.

It covers key areas of possible collaboration in faculty exchanges, offshore and onshore petroleum engineering, process control systems and process safety in all chemical engineering fields and non-conventional energy areas.

IIPE, which was initiated by the Indian Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, was established in 2016 in the state of Andhra Pradesh.


BIMARU states top in non/partially-immunized children: UN agencies

According to UN bodies WHO and Unicef, The ‘BIMARU’ Indian states – Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh – have the highest numbers of partially immunized and non-immunized children.

According to data shared by the UN bodies, the national average for full immunization is 62 percent, for diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine (DTP3) coverage is 78.4 percent and for measles first dose 81.1 percent.

According to UN bodies, a record 123 million children were immunized globally in 2017.

However, the report also suggested that almost 20 million children did not receive the benefits of full immunization in 2017.


BANKING AND ECONOMY

FinMin gives nod for capital infusion of over ₹11,000 cr in five PSBs

The Finance Ministry gave its nod for capital infusion of ₹11,336 crore in five weak public sector banks to help them tide over any situation of breach of regulatory capital requirements.

The five banks that are to get capital support under this round are Punjab National Bank (₹2,816 crore); Indian Overseas Bank (₹2,157 crore); Andhra Bank (₹2,019 crore); Corporation Bank (₹2,555 crore) and Allahabad Bank (₹1,790 crore).

The government had in October last year announced ₹2.11-lakh crore capital infusion programme over two financial years.

The Public sector banks are currently under the pressure of the bad-loan mess, which is estimated to be over ₹9-lakh crore.


Canara Bank launches RuPay credit card

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Canara bank launched the Canara RuPay Credit Card.

The new card variant is issued in association with the National Payment Corporation of India and it will provide the best features of a credit card.

The card is efficiently designed to provide 20-50 days interest free repayment period. It comes with a complimentary insurance cover of up to Rs 1 lakh in case of loss of life.

Canara Bank currently has Mobile Wallet, EasyCash and P-Serve as technology products.


WPI Inflation At 4.5-Year High, Grows 5.77% in June

India’s wholesale inflation grew 5.77 percent in June, a four-and-half year high, driven by some food items and fuel prices. It is latest price data released by the commerce and industry ministry.

A higher inflation in the month of June can also be attributed to an unfavourable base effect.

WPI witnessed a growth of 4.43 percent in May and 0.90 percent in June 2017.

Gautam Kaul Won Prestigious Post In Federations’ Executive Committee Elections

India has been elected as new President of Asian Tug of War Federation.

India’s Gautam Kaul won the prestigious post in the Federations’s Executive Committee elections held in Kathmandu.

According to a press release issued by the Federation, this is the first time when India has been elected to lead the organisation.

The tenure of newly elected office bearers will be for 3 years. The Asian Tug of War Federation is having its headquarter in Bangkok.


Pacer Awana retires from all forms of cricket

India and Delhi pacer Parvinder Awana has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, having played his last first-class game back in November 2016.

Awana represented Delhi for nine years and played two T20 Internationals for India in the 2012 home series against England. The pacer also played for Kings XI Punjab for three seasons from 2012-2014.

Nabard award for Repco Micro Finance

Repco Micro Finance Ltd, a non-banking finance company promoted by Repco Bank, received Nabard 2018 award.

It has been awarded for its service to self-help group (SHG) linkage in Tamil Nadu for the fiscal year 2017-18.

The Repco Micro Finance Ltd has disbursed loans amounting to ₹2,500 crore to over 10 lakh beneficiaries through 50,000 SHGs.


8-Year-Old Indian-Origin Yoga Champion Named ‘British Indian Of The Year’

An eight-year-old Indian-origin schoolboy Ishwar Sharma, who is the under-11 UK national yoga champion has been named the ‘British Indian of the Year’ in the young achiever category for his accomplishments in the field.

He was named British Indian of the Year in the Young Achiever category at the sixth annual awards ceremony held in Birmingham.

He won a gold medal representing Great Britain at the World Student Games 2018 in Winnipeg, Canada.

UK ranked world’s top ‘soft power’

The UK has topped an annual global ranking of nations’ soft power, with France placed second on the list of 30 countries which does not feature India.

The 2018 ‘Soft Power 30’ index, published by UK-based strategic communications consultancy firm Portland and the University of Southern California Center on Public Diplomacy.

In Asian ranking list of 10 countries, India has been placed on the eighth position.


Salman, Akshay in Forbes world’s 100 highest-paid entertainers

Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan are among the world’s 100 highest-paid entertainers, according to Forbes list.

Akshay Kumar is ranked 76th on the Forbes list of the World’s Highest Paid Celebrities 2018 while Salman Khan is on the 82nd spot. Akshay had earnings of 40.5 million dollars and Salman, 52, had earnings of $37.7 million.

The list has been topped by Mayweather with earnings of 285 million dollars.

Thailand Open 2018: Nozomi Okuhara defeats PV Sindhu in Finals

Nozomi Okuhara of Japan defeated PV Sindhu in the finals to clinch Thailand Open 2018.

The event was held in the Thailand Open at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok.


7th World Junior Wushu Championships Concluded in Brazil

The Indian team bagged nine medals including four silver and five bronze in the 7th World Junior Wushu championships held in Brasilia, Brazil.

Iranian athletes were crowned as the champion of the international sports event, having clinched eleven gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals.

They were followed by contestants from Hong Kong in the second place, who collected ten gold, four silver and eight bronze medals.

Nelson Mandela International Day – 18 July

Nelson Mandela International Day (or Mandela Day) is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each year on 18 July, Mandela’s birthday.

The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009.
