Centre Releases Rs 340 Crore For Flood Relief In Assam
The Central government has released Rs 340 crore to Assam for handling flood-related issues, including relief, rehabilitation and repair works of damaged infrastructure.
It was announced by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jitendra Singh.
Out of this, Rs 101 crore was released by the DoNER, while the remaining Rs 239 crore was given by the home ministry under the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) account.

Maharashtra Government Forms Study Committee For Floating Solar Power Plant
The Maharashtra government has set up a committee to study issues related to the development of a 1,000-MW floating solar power plant at Ujani dam in Solapur district.
The committee will study the environmental impact of the project and monitor the month-wise water level of the dam. Director (Commercial) of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL), Satish Chavan, has been appointed as the head of the committee.
Ujani is located in Madha taluka of Solapur, around 300 kms from Mumbai, is among the largest dams in Maharashtra. Ujani dam has a total capacity of 110 TMC and compared to other dams in the state, it has been constructed on a flat land with less depth.
Ujjani Dam, also known as Bhima Dam is on the Bhima River, a tributary of the Krishna River.

India Is World’s Most Dangerous Country For Women, US At 10th Spot
India ranked no. 1 on the list due to the high risk of sexual violence and being forced into slave labor, according to the poll.
War-torn Afghanistan and Syria ranked second and third, followed by Somalia and Saudi Arabia.
The survey is taken by global experts by the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
India the most dangerous country for women in terms of human trafficking, including sex slavery and domestic servitude, and for customary practices such as forced marriage, stoning and female infanticide. The only western nation to figure in the poll of 550 experts is the United States, which ranked tenth.
The poll was reportedly a repeat of a survey in 2011 wherein experts saw Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, India and Somalia as the most dangerous nations for women.
As per government data, crime against women in India went up by 83% between 2007 and 2016, with four cases reported each hour.
EAM Sushma Swaraj Introduces ‘Passport Seva App’
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj launched a Passport Seva app for seamless application and issue of passports.
Swaraj mentioned the two new schemes – Passport application from anywhere in India, and filling passport application forms from mobile phones, would make the procedure for obtaining passports simpler.

WWF-India Launches First-Ever Nature-Themed Comic Book
The World Wildlife Fund-India has launched its first-ever comic book that also celebrates the geographical diversity of the country.
The book named ‘The Great Indian Nature Trail with Uncle Bikky’ follows the travels of its protagonists Uncle Bikky, Chunmun and their dog Duggu as they learn about wildlife across India, and uses a humorous approach towards raising knowledge and awareness for wildlife protection and conservation.
The book has been the joint work of Rohan Chakravarty and Bijal Vachharajani. The book was launched by Bikram Grewal, eminent ornithologist and author, and Ravi Singh, Secretary and CEO, WWF-India.

World’s Largest Multilateral Naval Exercise RIMPAC Began
The world’s largest multilateral naval exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) will begin in Hawaii in the Western Pacific Ocean. The two-month long biennial exercise is likely to be attended by navies of 26 countries including India.
Indian Naval Ship Sahyadri has already reached the Pearl Harbour in Hawaii to participate in the 26th edition of RIMPAC exercise. The INS Sahyadri is commanded by Captain Shantanu Jha and it is a state-of-the-art indigenously built guided missile stealth frigate which is a part of the Eastern Fleet under the Eastern Naval Command.
India’s participation in the exercise provides a platform for increased interoperability and development of common understanding of procedures for maritime security operations.
It is hosted and administered by the United States Navy’s Pacific Fleet, headquartered at Pearl Harbor.
India handed over Dornier aircraft to Seychelles President
India has handed over a second Dornier aircraft to the President of Seychelles, Danny Faure for enhancing the country’s surveillance capabilities to tackle maritime.
Prime Minister Modi had announced the gifting of a second Dornier aircraft during his landmark visit to Seychelles in March 2015. India has earlier gifted the Seychelles Coast Guard a fast track vessel, a Dornier aircraft, and two helicopters.

British Queen Elizabeth Approved Brexit Law
A Bill enacting Britain’s decision to leave the European Union (E.U.) has become law after months of debate.
Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has granted royal assent to PM Theresa May’s Brexit legislation. The announcement was made by House of Commons speaker John Bercow.
Brexit is the impending withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. In a referendum on 23 June 2016, 51.9% of the participating UK electorate voted to leave the EU, out of a turnout of 72.2%.

India pledges 5 million Dollars for Palestinian refugees
India has pledged $5 million for the UN agency that helps Palestinian refugees during a campaign to make up for the shortfall in its funding after the US cut its contributions.
The offer of the contribution was given to the organisation known as UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA). The agency faces a shortfall of $250 million, according to the UN.
The agency said that the actual shortfall for its budget would be $300 million as it had been expecting $365 million from Washington(USA) but has received only $65 million.
In March, India had announced at a conference in Rome that it was raising its annual contributions from $1.25 million per year to $5 million for the next three years.
15th India-Australia Joint Ministerial Commission Held In Canberra, Australia
The 15th India-Australia Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) was held on 25th June 2018, in Canberra, Australia.
The meeting was jointly chaired by Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu and Australian Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Steven Ciobo.
An MoU was signed between Austrade and Invest-India in order to facilitate bilateral investment flows.

APPOINTMENTS
S Ramesh Appointed as Chairman Of CBIC
The Senior bureaucrat S Ramesh has been appointed as chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), the apex policy-making body for indirect taxes.
He will succeed Vanaja N Sarna, who superannuates on June 30.
Ramesh, a 1981 batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise), is at present the member in the board, mandated with the responsibility of implementing the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
The CBIC, which works under the Finance Ministry, is headed by a chairman and can have a maximum of six members.

Kalki Koechlin will be Conferred With French Honour
Actor Kalki Koechlin will be conferred with the French distinction of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) for her contribution in enhancing Indo-French ties in cinema.
Kalki, who has French background, has done films such as Dev.D, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Shanghai and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewan.
The award will be presented by the Ambassador of France to India, Alexandre Ziegler.

West Indies to host ICC Women’s World T20 championship 2018
The 2018 edition of the Women’s World T20 will be hosted by Antigua and Barbuda, Guyana and St Lucia from November 9-24.
The preliminary round matches will be held at the Guyana National Stadium and Darren Sammy Stadium in St Lucia, while Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua and Barbuda will stage the two semi-finals and the final.
The hosts will be joined by Australia, world champions England, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka who have all achieved qualification.
