PM Modi Announces Launch Of ‘Swachhata Hi Seva Movement’

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the launch of ‘Swachhata Hi Seva Movement’ from 15 September.

The movement will be launched to mark the commencement of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary on 2 October.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central Government launched the Swachh Bharat Mission in 2014 that aims at making a clean and Open Defecation Free (ODF) India by 2 October, 2019.


Andhra Launches e-Rythu To Boost Cashless Farm Ecosystem

The Andhra Pradesh government has launched a mobile platform, e-Rythu (e-farmer in Telugu) which will enable small-scale farmers to market their produce at reasonable prices.

Its main aim is to digitize agriculture marketplaces, payments, workflows, and provide farmers an easy and secure way to buy, sell and receive payments for agricultural products via their feature phones.

The platform has been developed by MasterCard Labs for Financial Inclusion in Nairobi, Kenya, and has been customized for India used by the Labs team based at Pune.


Sushma Swaraj embarks on a two-day visit to Moscow

The External Affairs Minister (EAM) Sushma Swaraj left for a two-day visit to Moscow, Russia.

During her visit, she will attend the 23rd India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Technical and Economic Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC).

It will be co-chaired by Swaraj and Yuri Borisov, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.

IRIGC-TEC is a standing body which annually meets and reviews ongoing activities of bilateral cooperation in the fields of bilateral trade and investment, science and technology, culture and other issues of mutual interest.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu to embark on 3-nation visit to Serbia, Malta, Romania

The Vice President Venkaiah Naidu will embark on a three-nation visit to Serbia, Malta and Romania.

Several MoU’s including in the field of Agriculture and Tourism are expected to be signed during Vice President’s visit to these countries.

India has historical linkages with these European countries and the visit of Mr Naidu will strengthen the relationship and will boost bilateral ties.

National Scholarship Portal Mobile App launched

The Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has launched the country’s first National Scholarship Portal mobile app that would make the government welfare schemes more accessible to needy students.

The students will get all the information regarding various scholarships on this mobile app. They will be able to apply for scholarships through the app.

The students can also upload necessary documents on this app, can check the status of their application and scholarship disbursement status etc.


Tamil Nadu Govt. slaps ban on sale of e-cigarettes

The State government has prohibited the manufacture, sale (including online sale), distribution, trade, display, marketing, import and possession of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems, popularly known as e-cigarettes, in Tamil Nadu.

The prohibition of e-cigarettes follows the Health and Family Welfare Minister announcing on the floor of the Assembly on June 14 the banning of e-cigarettes.

The ban advisory states that the use of e-cigarettes causes adverse health effects due to second-hand exposure to metals like nickel and chromium.

ASEAN World Economic Forum began in Hanoi, Vietnam

The World Economic Forum for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) began amid the ban of two human rights activists by Vietnamese authorities.

The event is attended by more than 1,000 participants from 43 countries, including Asean heads of state and government.

They stressed the importance of fully tapping the Fourth Industrial Revolution for socioeconomic development.


United Nations to hold Climate Summit in September 2019

The United Nations plans to hold Climate Summit in September 2019. It was announced by UN chief Antonio Guterres.

The UN Secretary General also announced the appointment of Luis Alfonso de Alba, a former Mexican diplomat, as his Special Envoy to lead the preparations of the summit.

The summit will focus on the heart of the problem the sectors that create the most emissions and the areas where building resilience could make the biggest difference as well as provide leaders and partners the opportunity to demonstrate real climate action and showcase their ambition.


Elon Musk signs up first passenger for round-the-moon trip on SpaceX

The SpaceX has signed the world’s first private passenger to fly around the Moon aboard in BFR launch vehicle.

It is an important step toward enabling access for everyday people who dream of travelling to space.

The BFR, or Big Falcon Rocket, is SpaceX’s forthcoming spaceship system that consists of two parts: A massive rocket booster that promises to out-power any ever built, and a towering spacecraft that will vault out of the Earth’s atmosphere.

Cabinet approved MoU between Exim Bank and BRICS Banks

The Cabinet has approved an agreement on collaborative research on distributed ledger and blockchain in context of development of digital economy by Exim Bank with the participating member banks under BRICS Interbank Cooperation Mechanism.

The ex-post facto approval for the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was given by the Cabinet chaired Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Xiamen Declaration signed in China on digital economy by the BRICS leaders had highlighted the importance of the digital economy.

Hunger Reached ‘Alarming’ 10-year high in 2017: UN Report

According to the latest edition of the UN’s annual multi-agency flagship report on the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World, the number of undernourished globally, increased to 821 million in 2017. This means that one in every nine people, does not have enough to eat.

The number of undernourished people has increased from 777 million to 821 million over the last two years.

The report emphasizes that climate variability and extremes are already undermining food production in some regions.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi Appointed Next Chief Justice Of India

The President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the next Chief Justice of India, the law ministry confirmed in a notification.

Justice Gogoi will assume office on October 3, 2018, as the 46th CJI. His tenure will end in November 2019.

CJI Misra on September 4 had recommended Justice Ranjan Gogoi, the senior most judge present in the Supreme Court, as his successor.


OBITUARY

Padma Bhushan economist VS Vyas passes away

The Padma Bhushan awardee and noted agricultural economist Vijay Shankar Vyas has passed away.

The economist was the director of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Jaipur. He was also a senior advisor in the World Bank’s agriculture and rural development department.

World Shooting: Udayveer Singh wins individual gold in jr. men’s 25m pistol event in S Korea

The Sixteen year old Udayveer Singh has won an individual Gold Medal in Junior Men’s 25 metre pistol event in the World Shooting Championships in South Korea.

Singh shot a score of 587 in the individual competition to grab the Gold ahead American Henry Leverett and Korean Lee Jae Kyoon.

Compatriot Vijayveer Sidhu finished fourth with a score of 581, while Rajkanwar Singh Sandhu took the 20th spot with a score of 568. The trio’s combined score of 1736 fetched them the team Gold for India.


Former Indian captain Sardar Singh announces retirement from international hockey

The Former India Hockey captain Sardar Singh has announced his retirement from international hockey after an illustrious career spanning 12 years.

The 32-year-old made over 350 international appearances for India and captained the national team for eight long years from 2008 to 2016 before handing the responsibility to PR Sreejesh.

He was also the youngest player to captain the Indian team when he led the side at the 2008 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. He received the Arjuna award in 2012 and Padma Shri in 2015. He has also represented India two times at the Olympics.

Hindi Diwas – September 14

Hindi Diwas is an annual day celebrated on September 14. On this day in 1949, Hindi written in Devanagari script became the official language of India under the Article 343.

Hindi is spoken by 250 million people as the original language and it is the fourth most spoken language of the world.

The word “Hindi” came from the Persian word “Hind” that means — The Land of the India River.
