United Nations Day: October 24

October 24, is celebrated as United Nations Day, Since 1948, declared by the United Nations General Assembly.

UN Day 2017 marks the 72nd anniversary of the UN Charter entry into force in 1945; it is celebrated to remember the “achievements and the goals of the United NationOrganization across the world and to gain their support for” its work

With the ratification by the majority of its signatories including the five permanent members of the Security Council, came together to sign the founding document, the United Nations officially came into being.

All the member states of the United Nations contribute finances to its operation to help further its goals.

The United Nations has become the truly universal global organization to address issues that transcend national boundaries and cannot be resolved by any one country acting alone.

Aside from world peace, it protects human rights, promotes social and economic development, and provides financial support around the world in cases of famine, natural disaster and armed conflict.

Every year, the global UN Information Centre organizes a variety of events to mark UN Day. These includes: flying the UN flag on important buildings, Conductingseminars,  panel discussions, symposiums for students, art competitions, rallies, film screenings and book/photo exhibitions, and social media campaigns.

Background

League of Nations was founded in 10 January, 1920 as a result of the Paris Peace Conference that ended the First World War. Itsforemost mission was to maintain world peace.

However outbreak of the Second World War demonstrated that the League of Nations failed in its primary purpose of preventing another world war.

United Nation was a replacement for the unsuccessful League of Nations which got established in 1945 after World War II in order to prevent another such conflict.

  3. The Economic and Social Council
  4. The Trusteeship Council
  5. The International Court of Justice and
  6. The UN Secretariat.
