India to Host Informal WTO Ministerial Gathering In New Delhi:

 Trade ministers from various countries including Australia, Japan, and Switzerland met for an informal WTO ministerial gathering in Davos, Switzerland.

India was represented by Deepak Jagdish Saksena, ambassador and permanent representative to the WTO.

India announced that it will host an informal WTO Ministerial gathering in March 2018.


Govt approved plan of Rs 750 crore for law university at Nagpur: Maharashtra CM Fadnavis:

 Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the government had approved a plan of 750 crore rupees for a law university at Nagpur. He said that the work on the first phase costing 200 crore rupees would begin soon.

He along with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari also laid the foundation stone of a flyover connecting Ujjwal Nagar to Manish Nagar to be built at a cost of 130 crore rupees.

‘Rail Yatri Guide’ kiosk launched at New Delhi station:

 The Chairman of Railway Board, Ashwani Lohani, launched ‘Rail Yatri Guide’ kiosk at New Delhi railway station.

The Delhi Division has developed the touch screen kiosk as a single point enquiry station for answering all the queries of passengers including guidance and navigation for accessing various facilities available at the station, read an official note.

The system comprises touch screen kiosks with a 40-inch screen display of 3D digitised railway station map and helps the passenger at the touch of the screen, it added.

 Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani attended a leadership conclave organised by the Art of Living in New Delhi.


 “Jai Bhavani, Jai Shivaji” Maharashtra tableaux wins million hearts by winning 1st prize:

 Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has congratulated the team behind the state’s tableau which won the first prize at the Republic Day parade in New Delhi.

The certificate issued by the Ministry of Defence says that the tableau on the coronation ceremony of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, presented by Maharashtra at the Republic Day parade this year, has been awarded the first prize.

The majestic Rajpath displayed India’s historical, educational, religious and cultural heritage with the ASEAN nations by two tableaux out of the 23 tableaux that were rolled down.

Qatar, Oman sign deal to boost trade, economic ties:

 Qatar and Oman have signed an agreement aimed at enhancing trade and economic ties.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed covers food production, marketing, joint investment and export of Omani products to Qatar.

The MoU was signed in the presence of the dignitaries of both countries.

‘Aadhaar’ is Oxford’s first Hindi word of the year:
The Hindi Word of the Year for 2017 is ‘AADHAAR‘. This was announced by Oxford Dictionaries at the Jaipur Literature Festival. ‘Aadhaar’ also becomes the first Oxford Dictionaries Hindi Word of the Year.

The accompanying shortlisted words include Notebandi, Swachh, Vikaas, Yoga and Bahubali, reflect the social, cultural, political and economic trends and events that have been part of 2017.


LSE welcomes EXIM Bank USD 1 bn bond to International Securities Market:

The London Stock Exchange, welcomed the issuance of Export-Import (EXIM) Bank of India’s USD one billion bond which will be admitted to its International Securities Market (ISM).

The ten-year dollar bonds raised USD one billion and it was nearly two times oversubscribed.The notes achieved the tightest ever spread over US Treasury for an Indian entity for a ten-year issuance.

The proceeds raised will be used by EXIM Bank to support Indian project exports, overseas investment by way of long term credit and its lines of credit portfolio.

 The Czech Republic’s pro-Russia president Milos Zeman won a second five-year term after beating a political newcomer viewed as more Western-oriented in a runoff vote.

Indian-origin principal of UK school branded ‘Hitler’ for trying to ban hijab:

An Indian-origin principal Neena Lall, at one of the UK’s leading state-funded schools has been branded as “Hitler” on social media over her efforts to ban the ‘hijab’ for very young students.

Neena Lall, head teacher of St Stephen’s School in Newham, east London, was forced to reverse the decision to impose a ban on the hijab for girls below the age of eight earlier this month after widespread criticism.


Bruno Mars sweeps Grammys 2018, winning top album and song:
Bruno Mars went six for six at the Grammys, winning all of the awards he was nominated for with his energetic and upbeat 90s-inspired R&B album.

Mars won album of the year for “24K Magic,” record of the year for the title track, and song of the year for the No. 1 hit, “That’s What I Like,” at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Mars has now won 11 career Grammys.

 In Tennis, World Number Two Roger Federer has retained his Men’s Singles title at the Australian Open. In the summit clash in Melbourne, he defeated sixth seed Marin Cilic of Croatia in five sets.


 Nehwal loses Indonesia Masters final to Tzu Ying:

 Saina Nehwal lost her final match of Indonesia Masters in Jakarta to Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei.

Billionaire IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad dies at 91:

Billionaire IKEA (IKEA is a Swedish-founded multinational group, headquartered in the Netherlands) founder Ingvar Kamprad, who turned a business he launched as a teenager into one of the world’s best known furniture brands, has died at the age of 91.


Ottanthulal artist Kalamandalam Geethanandan passes away:

Ottanthulal artist Kalamandalam Geethanandan (58) collapsed and died during a performance at Avittathur Mahavishnu Temple in kerala.
